UP man climbs rooftop, attempts suicide after taunts about ‘beautiful' wife; internet relates it to ‘Sholay'

A 25-year-old man from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, who got married forty days ago to a 'beautiful' woman, climbed up to the rooftop in an attempt to take his own life after facing taunts from neighbours who said he was less attractive than his wife. A video of the incident is now going viral on social media. In the video, the man — Gurudev - is seen seated on the edge of his terrace while others try to persuade him to come down. A police officer is also seen among those attempting to convince him, but Gurudev - a resident of Chakarpur Gahi village remains firm in his decision. Gurudev was eventually brought down with the help of villagers and police officials. He was then handed over to his family. Reacting to the viral video, the Bareilly Police issued a statement saying: "A PCR 0164 informed Sirsouli Police Station, Bareilly, that a young man named Gurudev, son of Khushiram, resident of Chakarpur Gahi village under Sirsouli Police Station, district Bareilly, aged about 25 years, had climbed onto the roof of a two-storey building. "Upon receiving the information, the Sirsouli Police promptly reached the spot. Upon inquiry, it was learned that Gurudev Upadhyay had a marriage-related dispute about 40 days ago. Villagers and his family stated that he was mentally unstable due to this, and was in distress and sorrow, attempting to commit suicide by jumping off the roof. "With continuous efforts over three to four hours, the Sirsouli Police team, with the help of the public and a rescue setup, successfully brought him down safely. After counselling, Gurudev Upadhyay was handed over to his family members." Social media users drew comparisons to a scene from the film Sholay, while also urging others not to taunt or ridicule anyone.

Yoga without meditation is incomplete, says Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

It's a known fact that the practice of yoga and meditation has deep roots in India, dating back thousands of years. However, we are also aware of how it has taken over the world. But while yoga has exploded in popularity, often seen through the lens of fitness and flexibility, its deeper essence, according to spiritual leader Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, is becoming of the 11th International Yoga Day, he reflects on how yoga is more than just movement; it's a gateway to inner calm, and without meditation, it's incomplete.'Many people think it's just physical fitness and stretching. But yoga is never complete without meditation. So if you do proper yoga and add meditation to it, you've got it,' the Art of Living Foundation founder told Sneha Mordani in an exclusive interview with India Today. He credits the growing global awareness of yoga, in part, to India's leadership.'This is the 11th International Yoga Day, and our honourable Prime Minister has taken this step and made sure that he himself sat and did the yoga. Since then, it has inspired a lot of people to join. It has become a mainstream narrative, not just in India, but all over the world.'advertisementSri Sri Ravi Shankar also emphasised how meditation isn't about forcing the mind to shut off—it's about conscious relaxation.'Meditation is not an exercise to focus or control your mind. Most people think meditation is concentration, and so they try to control the mind. But concentration is a byproduct of meditation,' he acknowledges the hesitation many feel when they begin.'A lot of people think they can't meditate, they say they can't sit still or that their mind is too full of thoughts. But that's natural. Meditation doesn't mean having a clean slate in your mind. That's a myth.'As for where to start? Breath is the bridge, he says.'You can't directly deal with the mind - it's abstract. But the breath is something in between. When you're happy, you breathe differently. When agitated, you breathe differently. So start with breathing, alternate nostril breathing, Bhastrika, and then sit and relax. Meditation will take care of your state of mind and even strengthen you physiologically.'The science, he points out, backs this up.'There are hundreds of studies that show how meditation reduces anxiety, lowers cortisol levels, and eases stress. That's why I've made over 300 guided meditations, these tools are accessible to everyone now, through apps and teachers," he Watch

Amid India-Pak tension, Bengal BJP chief highlights Tagore's patriotic messages

Kolkata: Amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, the BJP's state president in West Bengal and Union Minister of State, Sukanta Majumdar, on Friday, recollected the patriotic messages in the songs penned by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Speaking to IANS, he said that the members of the three wings of the Indian defence forces are currently fighting with the inspiration of the lines from Gurudev, which read: 'O amar desher mati, tomar pore thekai math (O my native soil, I bow my head to you in deep obeisance)" 'Gurudev said these, and inspired by these lines, our brave soldiers are fighting at the borders. Now Indians must remain united, being inspired by the same lines of Gurudev, who had taken Indian literature to a new height globally,' Majumdar said at the sidelines of a garlanding ceremony of Gurudev's statue here on Friday. Speaking about the heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, Majumdar said India has the answer to every question from Pakistan. 'The Indian soldiers have started giving replies. This is a changed India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The three wings of the Indian defence forces have already started replying to Pakistan. In the coming days, such replies will continue,' Majumdar said. He also pointed out that the Indian defence forces only targeted the terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. 'But after that, Pakistan targeted the common Indians and the military establishments of the country. So that had to be given a fitting reply, and our soldiers are exactly doing that. All I can say is that Indians have faith in our Prime Minister. Be it the case of Balakot or that of Pulwama, India, under the leadership of our Prime Minister, always gave fitting replies to Pakistan,' Majumdar said. Commenting on Pakistan seeking an IMF bailout amid the heightened tension, Majumdar said that its financial condition is poor and already bankrupt; it should not have sought war. "India is always for peace. Now, since they want war, it is the duty of the Indian government to ensure the security of Indian citizens,' Majumdar said.
