Gurgaon civics bodies clear vending carts and parked vehicles near Unitech Cyber Park
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) conducted a joint demolition drive Monday morning to clear encroachments along the sector 39/46 dividing road. The action was prompted by multiple complaints about illegal vending carts and parked vehicles obstructing the service road near Unitech Cyber Park, causing significant traffic delays, a GMDA spokesperson said. 'The GMDA and MCG teams found that illegal carts were operating close to the cyber park, while cycle tracks and two-wheeler lanes developed by GMDA were being used as unauthorised parking spaces for cars and bikes. Despite four prior visits by MCG teams, which involved towing vehicles and issuing warnings to cart owners, the encroachments persisted, leading to delays of 45 minutes to an hour to cross a 500m stretch', it was added. The drive was led by R S Baath, Nodal Officer for Encroachments and District Town Planner, GMDA, and also involved traffic police personnel. Approximately 50 illegal carts operating without permits were demolished, and 28 challans worth Rs 15,000 were issued for parking rule violations. Commercial establishments nearby were directed to arrange staff parking within their premises. 'Investigations revealed that some cart owners lacked Aadhaar cards, and many were locals. Public reports also indicated that local mafias were charging up to Rs 3,000 from cart owners to operate on the stretch,' the GMDA spokesperson said. Baath stated that the GMDA is conducting regular day and night enforcement drives on key master and service roads. The authority aims to clear public land, green belts, and improve traffic management in Gurgaon, with more such drives planned over the next three months, he added. Last month the two bodies too jointly cleared over 75 allegedly illegal vegetable carts from Khandsa Road and 14 carts from Mahavir Chowk, Agrasen Chowk, and Bus Stand Road to tackle widespread encroachment. That action had been prompted by residents' complaints about traffic disruptions caused by illegal vendors near the Sabzi Mandi at Khandsa Road that affected school buses and office-goers. In April, the two civic bodies had jointly removed over 200 encroachments by shops on a 2.5 km stretch from Mata Mandir to sector 5 in the city. 'There is a zero-tolerance policy towards encroachment, and FIRs will be lodged against the violators,' Baath said at the time.

GMDA serves notice to contractor for delay in repair of 13 key roads
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has issued a formal notice to a Hisar-based contractor for delaying special repair works on 13 key roads in the city, despite repeated verbal reminders. The authority has also warned of invoking liquidated damages as per the contract clause if the contractor fails to accelerate the pace of work. The special repair ₹25-crore project was awarded in December 2023 and is slated for completion by mid-August this year. However, GMDA officials say progress has been unsatisfactory across all project sites. 'The work on these roads will be expedited and action will be initiated if the pace of work is not accelerated,' a senior GMDA official said, requesting anonymity. GMDA officials clarified that liquidated damages are typically levied to compensate for losses from delays or non-performance and can be calculated as a percentage of contract value or operational expenditure. A notice dated May 21, issued by the GMDA, sub-divisional engineer, read: 'Despite numerous verbal requests, though you have started the work on one of the roads under your agreement, the pace of work is far beyond satisfaction. It could attract further liquidated damages as per clause agreement. You are hereby again directed to increase the pace of work by increasing the machinery at site and on plant. You are hereby also warned for quality of workmanship.' The 13 roads under repair include the sector dividing road of Sectors 23/23A, Sector 18/19 road, Mahavir Chowk to Atul Kataria Chowk, road dividing Sector 15 Part 1 and Part 2, New Railway Road, Old Railway Road, Civil Lines Road, Sector 9/9A, Krishna Chowk to Rezangla Chowk, Sector 5/6, Sector 22/23, Sector 7/8, and Sector 21/22. Residents, especially from Old Gurugram, say the poor condition of these roads is disrupting daily life. 'The roads in Old Gurugram must be repaired on priority and the authority must initiate action for delay in repair of city roads,' said Kumar Thakur, a resident of Sheetla Colony.

GMDA approves geotechnical survey for ₹52-cr Ambedkar Chowk flyover
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has granted permission for a geotechnical survey at Ambedkar Chowk (sectors 45/46 and 51/52) to facilitate the construction of a flyover aimed at easing traffic congestion in the area. The project has already received approval from the state government, officials said. The survey, to be carried out by a private consultant from May 25 to June 15, will form the basis of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to be submitted to the GMDA. 'The flyover will be constructed in two years from the date of allotment of the contract,' said a senior GMDA official. According to a GMDA survey, Ambedkar Chowk experiences severe congestion during peak hours, with average waiting time exceeding 10 minutes. The presence of a large private hospital nearby—identified as Artemis Hospital—has led to instances where ambulances got stuck in traffic. 'The GMDA has appointed a consultant for preparation of the DPR. For this, a geotechnical survey is required to be conducted at the Sector 45-46-51-52 road intersection,' said an order issued by the executive engineer, GMDA. The 700-metre-long flyover, to be built at a cost of ₹52 crore, is part of a broader traffic management plan. 'A flyover at Ambedkar Chowk, an elevated road along SPR, and another at Dadi Sati Chowk are planned. We've also got approval for five underpasses along the Gurugram Metro alignment,' another senior official added.
