‘Rust' armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed released from prison early
NEW YORK — 'Rust' armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has been released from prison after spending more than a year behind bars for the fatal on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Prison records show Gutierrez-Reed was freed from the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility on Friday morning, having served about 13 months of her 18-month sentence. Sources told TMZ her early release was due to good behavior, specifically her completion of a drug program while behind bars. Hutchins was attending a rehearsal at New Mexico's Bonanza Creek Ranch on Oct. 21, 2021, when she was fatally shot by a prop gun handled by leading man Alec Baldwin. He'd been seated in a church pew, practicing a move in which he whips a pistol from its holster, when it suddenly went off. The 42-year-old cinematographer was pronounced dead a short time later, while director Joel Souza was also injured and transported to Christus St. Vincent's Regional Medical Center by ambulance. He was later released from the hospital. In March 2024, Gutierrez-Reed, who'd been tasked with overseeing weapons on the set of the Western flick, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in connection with Hutchins' death. An investigation into the matter determined she was likely hungover when she loaded the prop gun with live ammunition. Prosecutors alleged she'd been drinking heavily and doing drugs in the evenings after production wrapped. She was acquitted of a second charge of evidence tampering, which stemmed from allegations that she transferred a bag of cocaine to another person after the shooting. Gutierrez-Reed will remain supervised under terms of probation after pleading guilty to a separate charge of carrying a gun into a Santa Fe bar, where firearms are prohibited, in the weeks before filming began. Baldwin also faced an involuntary manslaughter charge in connection with Hutchins' death, but a judge dismissed the case in the middle of trial last summer due to prosecutorial misconduct and evidence suppression. ©2025 New York Daily News. May 25 (UPI) -- The armorer for the Alec Baldwin film Rust has been granted parole and released after serving time in prison for the accidental, on-set shooting death of the film's cinematographer in October 2021. Halyna Hutchins was shot dead by Baldwin, who was handling a prop revolver that unexpectedly discharged during an on-set rehearsal in New Mexico. The weapon is believed to have been mistakenly loaded with a live round. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer responsible for the handling of on-set weapons, was sentenced to 18 months in prison, the maximum penalty allowed. She served her sentence at the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility. But Deadline and Variety reported Sunday that Gutierrez-Reed had served 85% of her 18-month sentence, a minimum state requirement for parole, and received extra marks for good behavior and the completion of a drug rehab program. Gutierrez-Reed signed out of the prison Friday morning and has returned to her home in Arizona's Bullhead City, about 100 miles south of Las Vegas, where she will serve out her parole, slated to end in May 2026. The armorer has also specifically been ordered not to have contact with members of Hutchins' family as part of her parole and is prevented from owning guns. Gutierrez-Reed is continuing to appeal her conviction through the New Mexico court system.

The armorer of the Rust Shooting case was granted parole last week, and now she is expected to stay away from the victim's family. Following her prison sentence of 18 months and extra points for good behavior, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was granted freedom, according to the New Mexico Department of corrections. The armorer on the sets of the Alec Baldwin starrer also completed her d*ug rehab program. Gutierrez-Reed was headed right to her home in Arizona and is expected to serve her parole there. As for one of the conditions of her parole, she will not meet the family of the victim, Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer. Other conditions of Hannah's parole include that she has to find a job, in the year that she is out of jail, submit to the curfew, and cannot own guns or any other weapons. Moreover, the armorer has to keep in contact with the parole officer and agree to constant monitoring. As for the case, Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of the charges of involuntary mansl*ughter. Alec Baldwin too faced a trial following the death of Hutchins. However, the actor never had to go to prison, as the jury declared him not guilty.

Gutierrez-Reed, sentenced to 18 months in prison in April 2024, was approved for release by New Mexico's Parole Board on May 23, according to a copy of the parole certificate obtained by USA TODAY. Per the certificate, the former armorer's parole is set to expire on May 23, 2026, provided that it's not extended by an "act of delinquency or revocation." Gutierrez-Reed was instructed to report to Bullhead City, Arizona, immediately following her release to meet with her parole officer. Gutierrez-Reed, who worked on the Western film co-written by and starring Alec Baldwin, was found guilty in March 2024 for her involvement in the October 2021 death of Hutchins, who was fatally shot when Baldwin's gun discharged during rehearsals. Hutchins was 42. The jury determined that Gutierrez-Reed had erroneously loaded a live round into a revolver that Baldwin was using on the set in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Jurors found Gutierrez-Reed not guilty on a second charge of tampering with evidence, stemming from allegations that she handed a small bag of possible narcotics to another crew member after the shooting to avoid detection.
