Cook flees with Malad bizman's 75L gold, diamond jewellery; arrested
Mumbai: A 32-year-old cook, previously employed by a Malad businessman, pilfered gold and diamond jewellery valued at Rs 75.07 lakh from the bungalow, 12 days after his resignation on May 17.
The Dindoshi police apprehended the accused, Chotu Mukhiya, in Darbhanga, Bihar, and retrieved Rs 72.57 lakh worth of stolen items from his wife's possession at their Goregaon residence. Mukhiya committed the theft to settle Rs1.5 lakh in debts owed to individuals in Darbhanga.
Probe revealed Mukhiya began working at Gaurav Guwalewala's (44) house on April 19, but resigned on May 17. "Mukhiya became a suspect when it was discovered that he stopped working from May 2, after receiving 12 days' wages for April. Despite working for 17 days, he became unresponsive to Guwalewala's communications and didn't turn up to collect his remaining salary. He had taken the position only to survey the premises," explained a Dindoshi police station officer.
After observing the household routine, Mukhiya executed the theft on May 28, when the family travelled to Ayodhya. The crime was discovered on May 31, when Guwalewala's mother found the cupboard locker damaged. tnn
