Estate evacuated as bomb squad called to 'grenade'
Bomb disposal experts were called after a suspected hand grenade was found in a waste disposal yard. The discovery at H Cope and Sons, in Grimsby, led to an evacuation and road closures. The Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit spent several hours checking the device before confirming it was inert, with no threat to the public. Managers at the company said they were told it was likely to have been a training device. Mark Norris, the operational manager for H Cope, said: "The bomb squad said the weight and the detail in it was very real. "It would have been used for training for the military, so we wouldn't have known it was inert." The evacuation took in a neighbouring business and a part of the Pyewipe estate. Humberside Police thanked people for their patience.
