PC spared jail after sexually touching victims

A trainee police officer found guilty of sexually touching two women on a night out has been sentenced. Charlie Valente, 24, from Leeds, was given a two-year community order with 200 hours unpaid work at Leeds Crown Court. The West Yorkshire Police student officer was found guilty in May of three counts of sexual touching following an incident in November 2022. The force said Valente had been suspended from duty pending a misconduct hearing. Passing sentence Judge Andrew Stubbs told Valente: "You were drunk, boorish and believed you were untouchable as a sexual predator. You felt in a position to dominate the victims. "One of the victims was so drunk she did not know what was happening, but you continued even when she showed she was not interested. "During the trial, one of the victims described the impact of your actions on her personal life that she has been having to rebuild because of what you did to her, so these are serious offences." He told Valente that he "may seem sorry now, but he didn't seem sorry for what he did" during his trial. However, he noted that Valente had "matured considerably from the drunken 22-year-old he was" at the time of the incident. As well as the community order, he was told he would have to carry out a 90-day alcohol rehabilitation programme and 20-day rehabilitation programme. He was also ordered to pay £8,000 towards the cost of the case. Speaking after Valente was found guilty, Det Ch Supt Tanya Wilkins said: "What was reported to the police by the first victim was a pattern of behaviour by this student officer over the course of a night out that has made her extremely uncomfortable, including unwanted sexual touching. "As part of our enquiries, we reviewed CCTV and established that there was also a second potential victim. "She was identified and spoken to and again confirmed that she had not consented to the sexual touching she was subjected to." Driver jailed after 10mph police pursuit

A man who attempted to get away from police by driving at just 10mph has been handed an immediate 12 month prison sentence. Jack Lowrey was spotted driving erratically through parts of Cumbria on the evening of 11 January as if "under the influence of something", Carlisle Crown Court heard. During a 16-minute "chase", the 21-year-old drove slowly with his lights off before having his tyres punctured by a police stinger and being forced to stop against a wall. Lowrey, who had been given 16 months in February 2024 for threatening to kill someone while holding scissors to their throat, admitted dangerous driving and aggravated vehicle taking. Previously of Distington but currently of no fixed abode, he also admitted to failing to provide a specimen and having no insurance or licence. He will also be banned from driving for 36 months after his release and will have to take an extended test before getting behind the wheel again. The incident began when Lowrey took a red Ford Focus courtesy vehicle without his family's permission. He had initially attracted the attention of officers while sitting in the vehicle on Moorclose Road in Workington, before then heading south towards Whitehaven where the blue light pursuit began. Upon his arrest, he was taken to a police station where he refused to co-operate and shouted abuse. Lowrey's barrister told the court how he had gone "out of control" and started to use alcohol to cope after his father was handed a lengthy jail term in 2023. Passing sentence, Judge Nicholas Barker said he had "little hesitation" in finding that Lowrey was "heavily intoxicated" during what "was a determined attempt, by you, to evade the police". Man jailed for stealing women's rings as they slept

A care worker who targeted two elderly residents and stole "precious" rings from their fingers as they slept has been jailed for 20 months. Bradford Crown Court heard one of Mohammed Numaan's victims, a 93-year-old woman, had worn her wedding ring for 70 years before it was stolen at The Mill House in Skipton in October. Numaan, of Jervaulx Crescent, Bradford, also stole two other rings from her bedside drawer at the care home, with the 27-year-old admitting two counts of theft. Judge Sophie McKone said the items had not been recovered by the time the victim passed away so she could not be buried with her "three precious rings". Numaan's second victim had a diamond ring stolen from her finger, the court heard, with the item holding "immeasurable sentimental value" to her and her family. He sold the rings to pawnbrokers soon after the thefts, with all the stolen jewellery eventually recovered. "The words 'callous' and 'cruel' do not seem to meet the justice of what you did," Judge McKone told Numaan. "Literally prising rings off the fingers of two elderly ladies as they slept in their beds." The four stolen rings were valued at about £3,300, but the judge said their sentimental value could not be measured. "It was done apparently for money, but it is inexcusable what you did to those two vulnerable people," she concluded. Man admits causing 81-year-old cyclist's death

A man has admitted causing the death of an 81-year-old cyclist who was killed in a crash in Rotherham. Graham Slinn, from Sheffield, was struck by a dark blue Volkswagen Golf on the A57 near Todwick at about 15:15 BST on 4 April and was pronounced dead at the scene. At Sheffield Crown Court on Monday, Cain Byrne, 20, admitted causing Mr Slinn's death by driving dangerously, driving without a licence and driving without insurance. Byrne, of Redvers Buller Road, Chesterfield, was warned by a judge it was "highly likely" he would face a "sentence of some substance". Mr Slinn's family previously paid tribute to the carer from Gleadless, describing him as "gentle, funny and kind to his core". "He and my mum were about to celebrate 60 years of marriage," his daughter said. "Now she faces silence, heartbreak, and a future without the man who made her laugh every day." Byrne is due to be sentenced on 27 June. Listen to highlights from South Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North. HM Courts and Tribunals Service
