Photos Show British Aircraft Carrier Reaching Indo-Pacific Waters
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The British aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales arrived in Indo-Pacific waters after passing through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, as part of the Royal Navy flagship's deployment. The goal of the eight-month deployment is to reaffirm the United Kingdom's commitment to security in the Mediterranean and Indo-Pacific regions, the Royal Navy said on Tuesday. Why It Matters The Houthis—an Iran-backed armed group in Yemen—halted attacks in the Red Sea following a deal with the United States. Both sides exchanged fire in the crucial waterway from March to early May. The British aircraft carrier HMS "Prince of Wales" transits the Suez Canal toward the Red Sea on May 24, 2025. U.K. Ministry of Defense What To Know The Prince of Wales left its home port in southern England in late April for a mission known as Operation Highmast. This will take the aircraft carrier to the Western Pacific Ocean via the Mediterranean and the Middle East for joint war games with U.K. allies and partners. The naval strike group led by the Prince of Wales completed what the Royal Navy called a safe passage through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, arriving in the Indian Ocean from the Eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean, marking the next stage of its global deployment. U.K. Ministry of Defense Officially released photos show that the U.K. Carrier Strike Group, which includes multiple British, Canadian, Norwegian, and Spanish naval vessels, completed the transit in late May. A U.S. destroyer, USS Truxtun, was also seen sailing with the strike group in the Red Sea. The presence of the Truxtun complicates any potential Houthi attempts to target non-U. S. ships within the carrier strike group, the specialist outlet The Maritime Executive said. The U.S. destroyer also operated alongside the Prince of Wales in the Mediterranean last month. The Royal Navy did not disclose whether the carrier strike group conducted any operations, including escorting shipping, while in the Red Sea, the specialist outlet Navy Lookout noted. During its transit in the Red Sea, the Prince of Wales launched its F-35B stealth fighter jets, according to photos released by the Royal Navy. These aircraft are designed for air-to-air and air-to-ground combat, as well as intelligence gathering and electronic warfare missions. Before departing Europe, the U.K. Carrier Strike Group conducted a naval exercise with the Italian Carrier Strike Group in the Ionian Sea, south of Italy, the Royal Navy said. The drill involved 21 warships, three submarines, 41 fighter jets, 19 helicopters, and 10 patrol aircraft. What People Are Saying U.K. Defense Secretary John Healey said on April 22: "As one of only a few nations capable of leading a deployment of this scale, the Royal Navy is once again demonstrating that U.K. defense is strong, modern, and ready to meet the threats of today and tomorrow." Commodore James Blackmore, commander of the U.K. Carrier Strike Group, said on April 22: "Working closely with partners from across the globe, Operation Highmast will demonstrate credible deterrence and our support to NATO and the rules-based international order." Houthi Official: We Allowed British Aircraft Carrier to Pass Through Red Sea - Jordan News
Houthi Official: We Allowed British Aircraft Carrier to Pass Through Red Sea Yemen's Houthi group announced late Friday that it had permitted a British aircraft carrier to pass through the Red Sea after the vessel communicated with them and declared it was 'transiting for maneuvers and not conducting any combat operations.' اضافة اعلان The announcement was made in a post on X by Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a member of the group's Supreme Political Council. Al-Houthi stated that the group had been contacted 'regarding the passage of the British aircraft carrier (HMS), which said it would transit for maneuvering purposes and would not carry out any combat operations in the Red Sea.' He added that the group informed the British side it would allow the passage of the carrier 'as long as it is on a non-combat mission or does not pose an aggressive intent, in order to avoid distracting the armed forces (Houthis) from supporting Gaza, which is facing extermination by the Israeli entity.' As of 07:00 GMT, there had been no immediate comment from British authorities on the matter. The UK has previously joined the U.S. in conducting repeated airstrikes against the Houthis in Yemen, in response to the group's attacks in the Red Sea. The Houthis remain committed to launching missiles toward Israel as long as Tel Aviv continues what they describe as a genocide in the Gaza Strip. Missile attacks launched from Yemen toward Israel have led several international airlines to suspend flights to Israel for varying periods. — (Anadolu Agency)

Football club bids to expand its academy site
A professional football club has applied for permission to expand its academy. Mansfield Town opened the Radford & Hymas training facility in Woburn Lane, Pleasley, in 2016, and in 2023 it bought more land nearby from Nottinghamshire County Council to expand onto. Now the Stags have bid to build an indoor training pitch and outdoor pitch with lighting, a sports hall and gym building, and two new car parks. In documents sent to planning authority Mansfield District Council, the club said the expansion would enable it to welcome new youngsters and tackle "problematic" car parking. At the time the club purchased the 5.5 acre (22,257sq m) site for an undisclosed sum, it said more than 300 children used the facility each week and it supported more than 70 students on apprenticeships and further education at West Notts College and Nottingham Trent University. But it said this had led to "problematic" parking at evenings and weekends. In the planning application, HMS Town Planning and Design said the extra facilities would allow the League One club to grow, support its teams at all levels, and promote healthier lifestyles in the area "as well as make optimal use of an existing facility that is operating below its potential". Mansfield planners are consulting on the plans until 14 June, with a decision on the application expected by mid-August. Follow BBC Nottingham on Facebook, on X, or on Instagram. Ex-Harvard Med School Morgue Manager Helped Steal Corpses
Harvard is in the news a lot this week — mostly about lawsuits and executive orders and the like. But the prestigious university is also relevant for another reason: its former Medical School Morgue Manager has admitted to helping steal corpses. According to the Associated Press, Cedric Lodge, 57, pleaded guilty in Pennsylvania to the interstate transport of stolen remains. The crime carries up to 10 years in prison. Lodge was hardly alone in this crime though, which included the theft of hands, feet, heads, and other body parts stolen from corpses. Federal prosecutors say that Lodge was part of a nationwide network of people who were buying and selling stolen body parts. Lodge's wife, Denise was also involved in the scheme, coordinating the online sales of at least two dozen hands, two feet, nine spines, parts of skulls, five dissected human faces, and two dissected heads. The body parts were stolen from Harvard and a mortuary in Arkansas. The bodies stolen from Harvard had been donated to the school for research. A previous article from the AP detailed that Cedric would take the body parts home from work and store them in the couple's home. Sometimes, they would mail the stolen parts to customers. Other times, Cedric would allow people to come to the morgue and allow people to select which parts they wanted. Cedric was fired from Harvard on May 6. 'We are appalled to learn that something so disturbing could happen on our campus — a community dedicated to healing and serving others,' Harvard Medical School deans George Daley and Edward Hundert said in a shared statement. 'The reported incidents are a betrayal of HMS and, most importantly, each of the individuals who altruistically chose to will their bodies to HMS through the Anatomical Gift Program to advance medical education and research.'
