Sevens great Caslick hails Perth win as among her best
Australian rugby sevens great Charlotte Caslick has rated the team's gritty win at the Perth event as one of the best moments of her stellar career. A thrilling 28-26 win over New Zealand In the final on Sunday gave Australia their second triumph in three World Series events and moved them to within two points of the ladder-leading Kiwis. Their win was even more meritorious given major strike weapons, world sevens player of the year Maddison Levi and Faith Nathan, were unavailable for the two matches on Sunday. She's been on fire at #HSBCSVNSPER 🙌Who else but @CharlieCaslick to put @Aussie7s into the lead 💪#HSBCSVNS — HSBC SVNS (@SVNSSeries) January 26, 2025 Levi, who had scored nine tries in Australia's first four wins, including two hat-tricks, broke a thumb while Nathan failed an HIA. Australia also had Madison Ashby and Bienne Terita unavailable for the tournament. The squad contained five players 21 or under and, with the superstars absent, some of the younger members stood up. Heidi Dennis,19, followed up a try in the 24-17 semi-final win over Canada with two in the final, earning her player-of-the-match honours. "I think today in particular showcased the depth we have within our squad, girls like Heidi stepping up." Caslick said. "Mackenzie Davies got a lot of minutes there as well and we just seem to be able to roll them out throughout our squad and they play as good as the girls front of them, which is so good." Caslick has been part of many Australian tournament wins over the past decade, including the 2016 Olympics, but rated the latest triumph highly. "I think it's one of the best ones yet, I'm just so proud of the girls," Caslick said. "Some of those girls haven't played a lot of rugby on the World Series up until this tournament . "To see what they could put out there and the way they performed was something that I'm really proud to be a part of and I'm just so excited to be moving forward with them." Dennis was a talented footballer who made the Young Matildas squad before switching to rugby where her career has been stalled by injuries. "To do it at home, it's so special." 🙌Heidi Dennis, your @HSBC_Sport Player of the Final 🏆#HSBCSVNS | #HSBCSVNSPER — HSBC SVNS (@SVNSSeries) January 26, 2025 "Coming off back-to-back injuries, it's good to finally just get a straight run." Dennis said. The victory in Perth ended Australia's seven-year tournament drought on home soil. Australia's men also suffered injury issues in Perth, but moved two places up the table to sixth, after achieving a season-best runners-up spot in Perth by losing 41-5 to Argentina in the final. Injuries deprived them of James Turner, Henry Hutchinson, Hayden Sargeant and James Turner after their dramatic 17-12 semi-final win after extra-time over Canada. They lost their first two pool games, but won their next three matches before being steamrolled by the defending Series champions, as they were in last year's Perth final.

Aussie rugby women win Perth Sevens as men lose final
Australia's rugby women have broken a seven-year tournament drought on home soil as emerging star Heidi Dennis starred in a thrilling 28-26 final win over arch-rivals New Zealand In the final of the Perth Sevens. The women went one better than Australia's injury-hit men's side, who had earlier on Sunday been crushed 41-5 by Argentina in their final at HBF Park. The trans-Tasman rivals both scored four tries in a fabulous women's final, but Australia prevailed on the final day even without women's sevens player of the year Maddison Levi, who suffered a broken finger, and fellow speedster Faith Nathan, who failed a HIA. Australia had also beaten Canada 24-17 In the semi-finals, while New Zealand defeated France 36-7. The Perth victory moves Australia to within two points of series leaders New Zealand. The final started in dramatic fashion with New Zealand ace Michaela Brake, who scored four tries in the semi-final, fending off two attempted tackles to touch down after 30 seconds. Dennis sprinted away for her first and the hosts hit the front with Tia Hinds dummying her way through the defence from halfway New Zealand retaliated, with Kelsey Teneti crossing as the scores were locked 14-14 at halftime. Within 90 seconds of the restart, Australian great Charlotte Caslick sprinted 80 metres after stepping and dummying her way through the defence. Brake added another long distance try but Teagan Levi broke through the defence to set up Dennis for her second try. France beat Canada 14-7 in the bronze medal match. Australia's men also had injury woes, losing Henry Hutchinson, Hayden Sargeant and James Turner after their dramatic 17-12 semi-final extra-time win over Canada. Australia moved up to sixth on the ladder after their best finish of the season. Argentina moved joint top on points Fiji and Spain, with the Spaniards securing a third straight bronze medal with a 14-7 win over South Africa. Australia's rugby men have once again been crushed by defending world series champions Argentina in the final of the Perth Sevens at HBF Park. Argentina, who beat Australian 31-5 last year, triumphed 41-5 in the 2025 iteration against an injury-hit green-and-gold outfit on Sunday.
