KLIA boosts China connectivity with Hainan Airlines' new Haikou route

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has expanded its international connectivity with the launch of Hainan Airlines' inaugural direct flight service to Haikou, China. The new route, which commenced on May 30 this year, offers four direct flights a week between Kuala Lumpur and Haikou. According to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) statement, this connection is a part of the group's broader strategy to enhance air links with China, a key target market for tourism, business, and trade growth. MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the new Kuala Lumpur–Haikou route reflects a strategic push to strengthen KLIA's network. "This route expansion reinforces our role as an airport operator driving growth through enhanced accessibility, which supports trade, tourism and economic development," he said in a statement. He added that China remains a top priority for KLIA and the new service is a step forward in improving accessibility between the two countries. The new route also provides Malaysian travellers with easier access to Hainan. More broadly, it opens seamless travel connections for passengers transiting through Haikou to over 50 cities in China, as well as major global destinations like London, Bangkok, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Additionally, Haikou is increasingly positioning itself as a strategic gateway for flights connecting China to the Middle East, offering convenient onwards connections to destinations such as Dubai and Jeddah.
