Dave Chappelle to celebrate Haitian migrants at Yellow Springs comedy show
Dave Chappelle will celebrate Ohio's Haitian community at his Yellow Springs comedy venue.
Chappelle, who lives in Yellow Springs near Dayton, will host the Haitian Appreciation Show at YS Firehouse on Saturday at 8 p.m. The comedy and music show will feature Grammy Award-winning singer and rapper Wyclef Jean, who was born in Haiti.
According to a statement released to Springfield News-Sun, the show will also feature community leaders and organizations that support immigrants and Haitian people living in Springfield, Dayton and Columbus. The Enquirer has reached out to Chappelle's media team for more information.
Springfield, Ohio faced bomb threats and Haitian immigrants were harassed after Republican leaders ‒ including President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance ‒ perpetuated false rumors that migrants were eating pets. The Trump administration announced it will end protected status for Haitian immigrants in August.
Chappelle's show 'is part of an ongoing effort to ensure that immigrant communities in Springfield and surrounding areas feel welcomed, recognized, and celebrated," the statement from the comedian's media team read.
Tickets for the Haitian Appreciation Show are sold out on Ticketmaster. But some discounted tickets have been reserved for Haitian residents, according to Springfield News-Sun.
On "Saturday Night Live" in January, Chappelle said he supported Haitian restaurants in Springfield, less than 10 miles away from his home in Yellow Springs, last year at the height of threats and rumors.
'I'll tell you something he (Trump) did that made me crazy when he was running for president. When he was running for president ‒ and he said this at a debate ‒ he said the Haitians in Springfield, Ohio were eating people's dogs and cats. That really upset me because I live in Ohio," Chappelle told the crowd. "For those of you that are from Ohio, I hope you know, that's not what's happening in Springfield at all."
