Review – Green Lantern #23: Specters of the Past
Green Lantern #23 cover, via DC Comics. Ray: The Green Lantern Corps have been going around the universe, but now they're in a completely new setting – Hell, where the worst creatures of the DCU dwell for all eternity. Hal is accompanied by Zauriel and Phantom Stranger for a mission relating to his old days as The Spectre, but he soon picks up another unexpected ally – G'nort, the iconic worst Green Lantern ever. What's he doing in Hell? It's not clear, but he seems mostly unfazed by the horrors around him. While Hal seeks out an old enemy of his, Kyle and his crew are having a much lighter adventure – traveling through space with Odyssey, Superboy, and new recruit Dan Garrett – who was thought to be dead for decades. Of course, just because they're not dealing with any existential horrors, it doesn't mean they're having it easy – this issue has them blasting their way out from a giant carnivorous space squid with a taste for spaceships. Dog days. Via DC Comics. One of the most impressive things about this run is how Jeremy Adams is obviously pulling in some deep cuts. Geoff Johns built a huge mythology for the character, but I can't imagine him hinging an arc on something Hal did as The Spectre years earlier. One of the most famous arcs of the book featured a truly vile villain who Hal sealed away with a key artifact – one that could fend off the Starbreaker Corps now. Of course, there's one problem with this heist – The Spectre is still guarding this prisoner, even if Hal isn't one with him anymore. With Jim Corrigan having passed on, The Spectre is now all rage without a humanizing touch, and he wants Hal back. The battle that closes this issue is one of the most exciting of the series so far, and it makes me wonder if the story of the Spectre's new host is being planned as we speak. The scale of this title keeps on building, and this issue is another big winner. To find reviews of all the DC issues, visit DC This Week. GeekDad received this comic for review purposes. Liked it? Nathan Fillion to Play Guy Gardner in DC's "Lanterns"
Yara Sameh HBO's upcoming DC series 'Lanterns' has tapped Nathan Fillion to play Guy Gardner, one of multiple Green Lanterns in the cast. This will be far from Fillion's first time playing a Lantern. He debuted as one of DC's green heroes in the 2011 animated film 'Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.' In it, he was the voice actor for Hal Jordan, one of many members of the Green Lantern Corps. He played the role again in 2012's 'Justice League: Doom,' 2013's 'Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox,' 2015's 'Justice League: Throne of Atlantis,' 2018's 'The Death of Superman' and 2019's 'Reign of the Supermen.' Each of the animated films was a straight-to-DVD release. In 2023, he was cast as a Green Lantern in James Gunn's live-action film 'Superman,' but as Gardner instead of Jordan. The film opens in theaters via Warner Bros. this July. 'Lanterns' stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. Per the official logline, the series 'follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.' Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan and Ulrich Thomsen also star. Chris Mundy serves as showrunner of 'Lanterns,' and wrote the pilot with Damon Lindelof and Tom King. All three executive produce alongside Gunn, Peter Safran, Ron Schmidt and James Hawes, who is directing the first two episodes. Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov will also direct. The series entered production in February. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. HBO's Lanterns Reportedly Casts New Character That May Debunk Rumor About Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. After making a dark and dynamic debut with Creature Commandos, James Gunn's DCU will blast into theaters with the David Corenswet-led Superman, but I'd be lying if I said I'm not inherently more amped up about HBO's Lanterns series than most upcoming 2025 TV shows. With an abundance of talents behind the camera, including comics mastermind Tom King, the series has amassed a stacked cast of both familiar characters (like the villainous Sinestro) and original ones. And the latest new star seemingly throws a wrench into love interest rumors for Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan. TV veteran and famed son of John Ritter (even if his Matlock co-star didn't know it), Jason Ritter is reported to have signed on for the cast of Lanterns, and as much as I'd love for this to be some kind of wild Gravity Falls crossover idea, that just wouldn't make any sense. But if the report's details are indeed legit, then it throws a ring-crafted wrench into prior rumors about Hal Jordan's love life. According to The Insneider (via ComicBookMovie), Ritter is joining the upcoming DC TV show to play an as-yet-unnamed character who is married to the character portrayed by Boardwalk Empire alum Kelly MacDonald. She was previously cast as Sheriff Kerry, who's described as being very devoted to both her hometown and her family. And it would appear that Ritter will be the main component of that family. Prior to Kelly MacDonald's official casting news, the actress was part of her own rumor thread, which correctly pinpointed that she would be portraying the show's core law enforcement. But those rumors also indicated that her character would serve as Hal Jordan's romantic foil, which sparked its own subsection of comic-based theorizing to determine whether or not she'd be a remixed version of someone from the source material. The prevailing notion had been that she'd be playing a sub-in for Carol Ferris, who has long been the most prominent love interest of Hal's, and who also eventually takes on the mantle of Star Sapphire. (Notably, Blake Lively portrayed Carol in Ryan Reynolds' arguably rewatchable 2011 effort Green Lantern, and the celebs are still together.) Of course, the fact that Kerry is a sheriff had already thrown doubt onto the Carol assumptions, and with Ritter now set as her husband, one can only wonder where those early rumors came from. the idea here is that Ritter's character will be a less-than-desirable hubby, inevitably sending his badge-toting wife right into Hal Jordan's beefy arms. That could make sense, especially if Ritter is already working full-time on Matlock and might only be utilized for a limited amount of Lanterns episodes. That's just me speculating, though. He may very well get his own ring at some point in the show. Let's be real, though. The only person who should join Lanterns to play Kyle Chandler's love interest is his former Friday Night Lights wifey Connie Britton. Clear eyes, full hearts, can't handle yellow. Wait, that doesn't sound right... One has to wonder whether we'll see Jason Ritter on Lanterns before we ever see his long-rumored cameo in Yellowjackets, which stars his real-life significant other Melanie Lynskey. Regardless, stay tuned for more casting news as we await the first official Lanterns trailer.
