Iraq Parliament to vote on Halabja Province, PMF laws

Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, Iraq's parliament is set to address several laws, including the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Service and Retirement Law. Tonight's session agenda featured seven items, such as the vote on the draft Halabja Province Law and the second reading of the PMF Law. In its last session, the parliament completed the first reading of the PMF Authority Law, which addresses the administrative structure, including directorates and brigades, after the PMF Service and Retirement Law was withdrawn and returned to the Cabinet due to surrounding controversy. Earlier today, the Halabja Chamber of Commerce and Industry called on Iraq's trade chambers to back its efforts in securing legal recognition for Halabja as Iraq's 19th province.

Iraq to vote on Halabja Province Law in Tuesday's session

2025-03-24T21:15:23+00:00 Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Parliament's sixth session agenda, scheduled for Tuesday, will include a vote on the draft law to establish Halabja as a province, according to the Parliament's media office. Iraq is divided into 18 provinces, and if Halabja, located 250 kilometers north of Baghdad, is approved as a province, it will become the 19th. These provinces are further divided into districts and smaller subdivisions known as subdistricts. In March, the Iraqi Presidency renewed its call for the Parliament to vote on the Halabja Province Law and urged political forces to back this demand. Iraq's National Wisdom Movement (Al-Hikma) leader Ammar al-Hakim was among those who expressed support for the Parliament's vote to establish the 19th province.

Iraqi Presidency continues to push for Halabja Province Law

Shafaq News/ On Monday, the Iraqi Presidency renewed its call for parliament to approve the Halabja Province Law. Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the Halabja chemical attack, Presidential Advisor Ameer Al-Kinani, in the presence of President Abdul Latif Rashid, reflected on the atrocities committed under the Baath regime, including the Anfal campaign and mass executions. Al-Kinani, speaking on behalf of the presidency, emphasized that "Iraqis reject all forms of oppression and aspire to a life of dignity," describing the Halabja massacre as one of the worst crimes in modern history, comparable to some of the horrors of World War II. He condemned the 'reckless policies' that led to such suffering and noted that other Iraqi cities, particularly in central and southern regions, endured similar atrocities during the 1991 uprisings, which resulted in mass executions. The official also called on the international community to step up efforts in preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction, promoting global peace, and supporting victims and their families. Stressing the importance of rebuilding affected areas, Al-Kinani urged lawmakers to approve the Halabja Province Law. "We call on political forces to support this legislation as a tribute to Halabja's martyrs." On Sunday, the presidency had urged authorities to accelerate Halabja's designation as Iraq's 19th province, aligning the process with the 37th anniversary of the chemical attack that devastated the city.
