'Half-Life 3' Leaks Suggest Unannounced Sequel Is Already In A Completely Playable State

Valve, a studio well-known for its aversion to making part three of its games, might finally be breaking the pattern, according to recent leaks suggesting that Half-Life 3 , the eagerly anticipated sequel to its classic shooter franchise, is not only in development but also in a completely playable state. These leaks come from Valve insider Tyler McVicker, who hosted a live-stream Ask Me Anything (AMA) session regarding the unannounced Half-Life sequel, codenamed HLX , which he previously uncovered via datamining and further evidence from the resume of Natasha Chandel, a voice actor who was supposedly working on the project. Half-Life 2 (2004) In his AMA session, McVicker claims that the upcoming game will not be a VR title like 2020's Half-Life: Alyx , but a full-fledged sequel. 'This is the furthest ( HLX ) has ever been. Period,' he said, 'The game is playable – end to end. Period. [Other Half-Life 3 projects have] never been that far. And they're optimising, polishing, and they're probably content-locked, and if they're not, then they're mechanic locked.' As for specific details of the game, McVicker avoided potentially spoiling the game, but did give some information regarding previous rumours that the game would use a procedural generation system. 'The way that Valve is going about doing that is akin to the [AI Director] in Left 4 Dead 2 and making it significantly more powerful. It's not changing geometry. It's instead changing entity placement [like] doors, physics props, enemies, items or NPCs of any kind.' He also added that he doesn't think this procedural generation technology will extend to the game's story. Finally, McVicker guessed that Half-Life 3 would be announced in the Summer of this year, followed by a Winter release, but as with all game leaks, especially for ones regarding major franchises like Half-Life, these rumours should be taken with a grain of salt, and fans should refrain from getting their hopes up until official confirmation comes from Valve itself. Half-Life 3 is reportedly not just in development, but nearly finished

Another day, another Half-Life 3 rumor. At this point, we don't need to say it, but we're going to anyway: take this with a grain of salt. According to Tyler McVicker (transcribed by Eurogamer), Half-Life 3 is 'playable, end-to-end.' He recently streamed a three-hour-long Q&A session where he dropped numerous hints about the widely anticipated sequel, including the suggestion that it could be released as soon as this summer. Normally, a rumor like this would be disregarded as just hearsay, but there has been other hints this year that stir up hope, however small, that the project could actually be on the way. In early January, the original voice actor for G-Man from Half-Life 2 posted a cryptic tweet stating an 'unexpected surprise' was coming in 2025. Following that, fans found that Valve had two games listed under Upcoming Releases on Steam, but only one appeared. Since that time, code references to something called HLX have been discovered and are widely believed to be the codename for Half-Life 3. McVicker emphasized that the upcoming game was not a VR title. 'HLX is being playtested so religiously and so widely that there are individuals who will just talk,' he claims. McVickers says he been offered story details 'by people whom are trustworthy' and while he avoids those details, 'there is information out there about the plot.' He said that Valve is 'optimising and polishing' the game, and that it is 'probably content-locked and if they're not, then they're mechanic locked.' In other words, if McVickers is correct, Half-Life 3 isn't just in development — it's almost ready for launch. Read More How to get Lattice in Marvel Rivals Again, exercise skepticism here. There have been more Half-Life 3 rumors over the years than we can count; after all, there's a reason its entire existence has become something of a meme. The game was worked on, but later cancelled for a variety of reasons. While it is possible that Half-Life 3 is making a comeback, we'll wait for official word from Valve before getting too excited. Viktor Antonov, art director for Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, has died, according to colleagues

Viktor Antonov, best known for his work as art lead on Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, has reportedly died at age 52. Half-Life writer Marc Laidlaw broke the news in an Instagram Story, and other former colleagues have since taken to social media to pay tribute as well. 'I didn't want to say much till I felt it was confirmed, but I learned today that Viktor Antonov, our visionary art lead on HL2, has died,' Laidla wrote in the now-expired post, which was reshared by LambdaGeneration on Saturday night. Antonov got his start in video games working on Redneck Rampage, and in addition to serving as art director for Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, he went on to consult on titles including Doom (2016) and Fallout 4. The Bulgarian artist just recently appeared in a documentary celebrating the 20th anniversary of Half-life 2 this past November. 'RIP Viktor Antonov. I wish I told you how much admiration I had for you but we get caught in our lives until a surprise like this hits us,' Raphael Colantonio, founder of Arkane Studios and Wolfeye Studios, wrote on Bluesky. 'You were instrumental to the success of Arkane Studios and an inspiration to many of us, also a friend with whom I have many fond memories.' In another post, game designer Harvey Smith added, 'All this about his impact and talent is true, but I will also always remember how much he made me laugh, with his dry, devastating wit. RIP.'
