SIT begins probe into Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah's controversial comments
A Special Investigation Team, formed on the orders of the Supreme Court, has begun its probe into the controversial remarks by Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah, one of its members said on Saturday (May 24, 2025). The three-member SIT has started meeting people in Raykundda village near Mhow in Indore district, where Mr. Shah made the objectionable comments aimed at Colonel Sofiya Qureshi on May 12, police sources said. Sagar Zone Inspector General of Police Pramod Verma heads the SIT, while Special Armed Forces DIG Kalyan Chakrvarthy and Dindori Superintendent of Police Vahini Singh are its other members. 'We launched our investigation the day before yesterday [Thursday],' said a member of the SIT. The SC on Monday ordered that a three-member SIT be formed to probe the matter. The Manpur police had on May 14 registered an FIR against Mr. Shah following a directive of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which had taken suo motu cognisance of the Minister's "crass remarks". The FIR has already been handed over to the SIT, said a police official from Indore. Asked when they would question Mr. Shah, the Tribal Affairs Minister, the SIT member refused to elaborate. 'We are on the job. That's it. We are staying put in Indore,' he said. The apex court has directed the SIT to file its first status report by May 28. The case against Mr. Shah has registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 152 (an act endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India), 196 (1) (B) (an act having an adverse effect on the mutual harmony between different communities, which causes or is likely to cause a breach of public peace) and 197 (1) (C) (speaking about a member of a community, which has an adverse effect on the mutual harmony between different communities). The SC had earlier said that the Minister's comments had brought 'shame' to the nation. Rejecting his apology, a Bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh said that it had seen the videos of his remarks and the subsequent apology, and wondered if he was shedding crocodile tears or it was an attempt to wriggle out of legal proceedings. During a public event in Raykundda village promoting 'Halma', a tribal tradition of collective labour and community participation, Mr. Shah had said, 'Those who wiped sindoor off our daughters' forehead... we sent their sister to teach them a lesson', referring to Operation Sindoor.

Slip of tongue: BJP leader on Madhya Pradesh Minister's remarks on Col Qureshi
BJP MLA Usha Thakur on Saturday sought to downplay the controversy over MP Minister Vijay Shah's objectionable remarks against Colonel Sophia Quershi, saying sometimes a slip of the tongue unintentionally creates had kicked up a major row by trying to portray Qureshi, the face of the government's media briefings on Operation Sindoor, as a "sister of terrorists".Police registered a case against Shah amid backlash and following the directions of the Madhya High Court, which castigated the minister for using the "language of gutters".advertisement "You know very well that no political leader intends to make such irresponsible comments. However, sometimes, a slip of the tongue leads to such misunderstandings. We need to reflect on these matters seriously and try to understand them," Thakur told former minister said one should understand the entire context of Shah's remarks."I have already requested you to look at the entire context of his statement. It would be better if we discuss it after that," she was present on the stage when Shah made the controversial statement on May 12 during a public event promoting Halma- a tribal tradition of collective labour and community participation- in Raykundda village of Indore severe flak, Shah said he was ready to apologise "ten times" if his remarks had hurt anybody, and said he requests Qureshi more than his own the clamour for Shah's resignation, Thakur said the Congress is doing its job, and the BJP organisation will do its reports that BJP leaders in the state might receive training in public speaking, she said, "This is a good initiative. Training should definitely and continuously conducted to become a good speaker."I would suggest such training should be held annually, topic-wise," Thakur added. IN THIS STORY#Operation Sindoor

Here's a portfolio of 3 FTSE 100 shares for passive income AND growth!
Looking for FTSE 100 shares to deliver dependable earnings and dividend growth? Here are three to consider today. Safety equipment supplier Halma (LSE:HLMA) is expected to report a 23rd straight year of record profits when trading numbers for financial 2025 come out on 12 June. What makes it so resilient, you ask? One reason is it's great track record of acquisitions (decades of M&A mean it comprises 50 different businesses). Another is the fact that safety is one area which businesses can ill afford to skimp on, regardless of broader trading conditions. Halma's impressive growth story means it also has one of the longest records of unbroken dividend growth on the FTSE 100. Payouts here have risen by at least 5% every year since the late 1970s. And it's tipped to raise them 7% in the current financial year (ending March 2026). Indicidentally, earnings are expected to rise another 8% during the current fiscal period. It's a forecast that means the predicted dividend is also covered an impressive four times over by anticipated earnings. To put that into context, any reading above two times is said to provide a wide margin of safety. Be mindful, though, that M&A-based growth strategies leave companies exposed to severe execution risk. To non-fantasy gamers, the resilience of Games Workshop's (LSE:GAW) sales over time may be hard to understand. After all, spending on expensive plastic miniatures and games-related paraphernalia should, in theory, be among the first luxuries to go. Yet the Footsie firm's products are playfully known as 'plastic crack' for a reason. Tabletop gamers are passionate about the hobby, and will find ways to stretch their budgets to build their collections even during economic downturns. Games Workshop is especially resilient, as its Warhammer products command an especially loyal (and growing) global community of enthusiasts. Profits have kept rising despite the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. And City analysts expect another 16% bottom-line rise this financial year (to May 2026). Dividends have risen at an annualised growth rate of 24% since fiscal 2020. And they're expected to increase 18% year on year in the current financial period. Predicted dividends are covered just 1.1 times by anticipated earnings, however. This could cause problems if profits disappoint (for example, due to cost pressures). Like Halma, Coca-Cola HBC (LSE:CCH) has a long record of consistent annual dividend growth. Cash rewards have grown every year since it listed on the London Stock Exchange in the early 2010s, including an 11% year-on-year hike in 2024. The company's focus on the highly stable fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector provides steady earnings over time, and thus the means for it to pay a decent and rising dividend. But this is only half the story. As the bottler of the world's most popular soft drink — along with a raft of other highly popular brands like Sprite, Monster Energy, and Schweppes — it benefits from pricing power than helps it grow profits (and subsequently dividends) across the economic cycle. City brokers are expecting a 14% rise in annual earnings in 2024, and a 12% increase in the total dividend. Encouragingly, this year's payout is also covered 2.2 times. Despite fierce market competition from other FMCG makers and local producers, I think it's a top FTSE 100 dividend stock to consider. SC rebukes Vijay Shah for remarks on Colonel Qureshi, FIR under review
Madhya Pradesh Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Shah approached the Supreme Court seeking relief from an FIR registered on the orders of the High Court following his controversial remarks about Colonel Sofia Qureshi. However, the apex court strongly reprimanded him. The case was presented before the bench of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai on Thursday, just a day after he assumed office. Shah had requested a stay on the FIR. The Supreme Court has scheduled the next hearing for 16 May. It is noteworthy that after the controversial statement given about Colonel Sofia Qureshi, an FIR was registered against Vijay Shah at Manpur police station of Mhow late on Wednesday night after the Madhya Pradesh High Court took suo motu cognisance. Shah has reached the Supreme Court to stop this. He has also publicly apologised for his comments. Madhya Pradesh High Court advocate Pratyush Mishra told Business Standard, "A case has been registered against Shah under sections 152, 196 (1) (b), and 197 (1) (c) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 152 is imposed for endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the country." Mishra said, "Once the the investigation is completed, the trial will take place in the Indore-based MP-MLA court. While in today's hearing in the High Court, Justice Atul Shridharan has said in his comment that this FIR is a weak FIR, so yesterday's direction of his bench should be considered as a part of the FIR. We are waiting for the complete order to analyse.' Earlier on Wednesday, the bench of Justice Atul Shridharan and Justice Anuradha Shukla of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, taking suo motu cognisance of the matter, had said, 'The armed forces, perhaps the last institution existing in this country, reflecting integrity, industry, discipline, sacrifice, selflessness, character, honour and indomitable courage with which any citizen of this country who values the same can identify themselves with, has been targeted by Mr Vijay Shah who has used the language of the gutters against Col Sofia Quraishi. It must be mentioned here that Col Sofia Quraishi, along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, were the face of the armed forces briefing the media and the nation of the progress of Operation 'Sindoor' launched by our armed forces against Pakistan.' Late on Wednesday evening, Shah also issued a statement saying, 'I deeply regret my words and feel profound sorrow. My intention was to highlight the contributions of the army and Sister Sofia in a respectful manner, but in a moment of emotional distress, I misspoke. I am truly ashamed and offer my heartfelt apology.' It is worth mentioning that on 12 May, in the Halma programme organised in Manpur of Indore district, Minister Vijay Shah had made an objectionable statement about Colonel Sofia Qureshi of the Indian Army.
