Al-Mandalawi affirms the House of Representatives' intention to amend the Environmental Protection and Improvement Law

Baghdad-INA First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Mohsen Al-Mandalawi affirmed on Sunday the House of Representatives' intention to amend the Environmental Protection and Improvement Law in proportion to the scale of environmental challenges The media office of the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "First Deputy Speaker Mohsen Al-Mandalawi received in his office the Minister of Environment, Halo Al-Askari, the Technical Advisor, Dr. Ammar Jaber, and the Director General of the Environmental Awareness and Media Department, Amir Ali Al-Hassoun, to strengthen joint cooperation between the legislative authority and the ministry on environmental issues and to review the extent of the risks and challenges facing the country in this sensitive field." According to the statement, Al-Mandalawi affirmed that "the House of Representatives is keen to support environmental plans and is determined to introduce amendments commensurate with the scale of threats to the Environmental Protection and Improvement Law to advance this important sector. He called on national forces to include programs to improve the environment, combat climate change, and implement sustainability concepts within their electoral programs and pledges, and to involve civil society and international organizations in supporting environmental efforts as a collective responsibility." For his part, the Minister of Environment, according to the statement, highlighted the importance of maintaining communication between the Ministry and the legislative authority, headed by its chairmanship and its relevant committees, to contribute to updating important environmental legislation to keep pace with global developments in this regard.

Iraq: Preparations for the first International Conference on Carbon Economy in Iraq

Minister of Environment, Halo Al-Askari, announced on Tuesday the commencement of preparations for the first international conference on the carbon economy in Iraq, under the patronage of PM Muhammed S. Al-Sudani. Minister Al-Askari affirmed that "this conference is a qualitative step within the government's efforts to diversify sources of national income and strengthen the green economy, by attracting investments in carbon markets and opening up prospects for sustainable climate finance, since PM Al-Sudani stressed that his government is a government of implementation towards environmental reform, improvement, sustainability, and effective engagement in green economy projects," according to a statement by the ministry - received by the Iraqi News Agency - INA. "The conference aims to attract local and international investors and create an appropriate environment for establishing strategic partnerships that contribute to advancing sustainable development," noting that "Iraq possesses promising opportunities in the field of carbon trading, in line with its international commitments to combat climate change." he included. Al-Askari continued, "The conference will also serve as an international platform to showcase Iraq's environmental initiatives and discuss investment mechanisms for carbon revenues and environmental improvement projects," calling on all stakeholders to participate actively to ensure the achievement of the desired development goals. In turn, the General Manager of the Carbon Economics Company, Nadhir Abboud Fazaa, confirmed that "there is widespread interest from local, Arab, and international companies in investing in the carbon economics sector," noting that "the ministry is working to build bridges of cooperation between these companies and sectoral ministries to implement projects that align with the government's vision for a sustainable green economy."

Minister of Environment: Iraq is moving towards investing in environmental projects

Baghdad - INA The Minister of Environment, Halo Al-Askari, confirmed today, Wednesday, that Iraq is moving towards investing in environmental projects, while pointing to working to reduce environmental pollutants. Al-Askari said, in a dialogue session during the Iraq Energy Conference, attended by the correspondent of the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The government's decision to separate the Ministry of Health from the Environment is important and works in the right direction," indicating that "many developed countries play an important role in the field of climate." He added that "Iraq is a stable country and is moving towards investing in environmental projects," noting that "the ministry has a lot of energies that we are proud of, and the vision is there and we are in the process of changing the mentality, as the ministry is supervisory and not executive and is a window to expand the economy, including the green economy." He stressed that "the Council of Ministers decided to establish a factory to convert waste into energy, and this is an achievement," explaining that "one of the achievements presented by the ministry is the project to establish the Carbon Economics Company, which is the first in Iraq." He continued: "Under the directives of the Prime Minister, the Ministry worked to give reasons and diagnose the causes and worked with ministries to improve the environmental situation by installing filters in factories and preventing the burning of waste." He pointed out that "we are working to reduce environmental pollutants, and desertification is not a problem in Iraq but in the region and the world," explaining that "Iraq has a desertification committee and participated in international conferences on desertification and there were contributions from the Iraqi delegation that participated with the green initiative launched by Saudi Arabia." Al-Askari indicated that "climate change is a global problem and Iraq chairs the Group of 77 with China to prepare for the climate summit in Brazil."
