Baker Lake man joins ranks of volunteers for Easter Games

Rene Mautaritnaak of Baker Lake is starting to make up for lost time. Mautaritnaak decided to lend his volunteer services to the hamlet during the Easter Games this past weekend and will be volunteering again during the Hamlet Days celebrations from May 5 to May 10. Mautaritnaak said he was happy to see everyone enjoying their time and having fun at the Easter Games. The games offered something for everyone, he said, with categories of Elders' games, children's games and adult games all being offered. 'We gave out all different cash prizes to the winners of the different categories, with our biggest cash prize being $125,' said Mautaritnaak. 'I really enjoyed setting up the games and I had some help. There were four of us altogether and it took us about seven hours to look after everything. 'I had people tell me the games were fun and they had a great time. It felt good to hear that and know our work was appreciated.' Mautaritnaak said he was excited to volunteer for the Easter Games for the first time. He said he donated his time this year because he wanted to be out among the public and helping out. 'I'm looking forward to volunteering again next month for Hamlet Days. 'Hamlet Days are way different from the Easter Games. There's going to be five full days of games, so we have to have a lot more things on the go, 'I'm looking forward to gaining the experience from both events, and volunteering is something I think I'll stick with. 'I really enjoyed the Easter Games and I'm sure I'll enjoy Hamlet Days next month too.'
