Fatal pedestrian crash in Hampton leaves one dead, driver flees scene
HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A man has died following a fatal pedestrian crash in Hampton on Sunday night, according to police.
Hampton Public Safety Communications received a call for a pedestrian accident in the 1000 block of West Mercury Boulevard at approximately 10:50 p.m.
Hampton Police and Hampton Fire and Rescue crews arrived and discovered a man lying in the roadway. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation determined that the pedestrian was attempting to cross the eastbound lanes of West Mercury Boulevard at the intersection of North Armistead Avenue when he was struck by a passing vehicle. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene after striking the victim.
There is a designated crosswalk at the location the man attempted to cross.
The crash is under investigation.
