Bank stocks rally as stronger won boosts capital ratios
Shares of South Korea's largest financial service providers — Hana, Woori, KB, and Shinhan — surged Tuesday, driven by expectations of stronger shareholder returns supported by improved capital adequacy. Hana Financial Group shares rose as high as 70,700 won ($57.57) during intraday trading, marking the highest price since its transition to a holding company in December 2005. The stock later trimmed some gains and closed at 70,100 won. Woori Financial Group also saw its shares hit a record high of 18,310 won during trading, the highest since becoming a holding company in January 2019, before closing daytime trading at 18,290 won. Other major financial service providers posted strong gains in stock prices as well. On Monday, KB Financial Group shares climbed to 102,000 won, approaching its all-time high of 103,900 won recorded on Oct. 25. With this rally, the firm's market capitalization reached 40.13 trillion won, making it the fifth-largest company on the local stock market, outrunning market giants such as Hyundai Motors and Hanwha Aerospace. It was the first time in nearly 15 years for KB to take the No. 5 spot since March 2010. However, as of Tuesday afternoon, KB shares edged down slightly and wrapped up trading at 101,900 won, dropping the company to sixth place in market cap, overtaken by Hanwha Aerospace, which stood at 41.95 trillion won. Shinhan Financial Group shares also posted a strong gain, closing at 56,500 won — a steep climb from 42,500 won on April 9. The stock's previous high stands at 64,600 won logged on Aug. 30. The recent rally in bank stocks is largely attributed to the strengthening of the Korean won. The currency appreciated into the 1,360 won per dollar range this week, recovering more than 100 won from its April low of nearly 1,490 won. On Tuesday, the value of the won was quoted at 1,369.5 per dollar when the daytime trading closed. A stronger won boosts the Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) ratio, a key indicator of banks' capital adequacy, thereby allowing financial firms greater flexibility in enhancing shareholder returns. The improved capital position comes alongside solid earnings. The four major financial groups recorded a combined net profit of 4.92 trillion won in the first quarter of 2024, the highest Q1 performance on record, surpassing the 4.91 trillion won posted in Q1 2023. According to market tracker FnGuide, the firms are projected to post a combined net profit of 17.64 trillion won this year, up 6.8 percent year-on-year. "Considering the banks' profitability, even with increased treasury share buybacks, the CET1 ratio is still expected to improve," said Choi Jeong-wook, an analyst at Hana Securities. "Share prices of global banks tend to track the scale of their treasury share repurchases."

Hana targets wealthy homeowners with reverse mortgage pension
'Hana The Next My Home Pension' offers lifelong income by leveraging home equity Hana Financial Group has launched a new pension product aimed at enticing seniors to tap into their home equity through a private reverse mortgage. The offering, "Hana The Next My Home Pension," targets homeowners whose properties exceed 1.2 billion won ($880,000) in declared value, which do not qualify for the government-backed reverse mortgage program from the Korea Housing Finance Corp. 'We developed this pension to help seniors prepare for the future as Korea undergoes a dramatic demographic shift, driven by the retirement of second-generation baby boomers and rising life expectancy,' a company official said. The new program is available to individuals aged 55 or older and their spouses, who must also be at least 55 years old. Applicants must have owned the home, either solely or jointly, for at least two years and be residing in it at the time of the application. Owners of multiple properties are eligible. The pension is structured through collaboration among Hana's affiliates. Homeowners entrust their property to Hana Bank, which manages it as a trust asset. Hana Life Insurance then provides lifelong monthly pension payments to both the owner and their spouse. Upon the owner's death, the right to receive payments transfers automatically to the surviving spouse, who continues receiving the same amount while living in the home. Hana emphasized that pension payments are guaranteed for life, even if the total disbursement surpasses the property's value. Liability is strictly limited to the trust-designated property. No claims will be made against heirs for any shortfall after the home is sold following the deaths of both policyholders, while any remaining proceeds from the sale will be passed on to them. Customers can choose from several payout options: a fixed monthly amount, a front-loaded plan with higher initial payments or a gradually increasing payout over time. To ensure long-term stability, a fixed interest rate is applied. The product is part of Hana's broader "Hana The Next" initiative, launched in October to expand services for seniors. The program offers life care support across financial and nonfinancial areas, including retirement planning, inheritance and gifting and health management.

Community Heroes: Sari Maharani served thousands of meals to flood victims post-Helene
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — This week's Community Hero took her love of cooking and helped feed people from Southwest Virginia, East Tennessee, and North Carolina after Hurricane Helene. It wasn't just a meal, but compassion for her community. Hana Asian Fusion & Sushi Bar opens in Johnson City After Hurricane Helene, Sari Maharani's (Esther) original plan was to cook 100 meals for survivors and rescuers. Soon, the number of meals needed grew, and so did the volunteers and donations of food and ingredients. 'And of course, I cannot do by myself. No, it's all community,' says Marahani. One week and two working commercial kitchens later, her meal count was more than ten thousand, distributed to Southwest Virginia, East Tennessee and North Carolina. 'You're so tired, but when you see the masses your food is going to, I would cry,' she said. 'Because that's the only thing I can do. I cook for them, and when that thing happened, you know, you don't have anything anymore. You don't have food, you lost your home, and you lost everything.' Dozens of volunteers came to cook and put together and deliver boxes of meals, with Sari leading the effort. Those who couldn't help still did their part. 'Some school come to me, a lot of kids that said they cannot help, but they make me small cards and they put the Bible verses on the card and then so I put it in every box, you know, and hoping when people open the box, bring them home, you know, bring them kindness,' she said. It's not just a plate of food, it's a way of saying, ' I care about you.' Something small that means so much. Sari says she feels, 'Joy, you know? You know, it's always good to give than take. My late mom, always teaching me you will never be poor when you feed people. Especially those people really in need.' Sari doesn't ask questions to the people in need and the people who are helping. Everyone works together. Food, she says, brings people together. 'Jesus said, 'Feed them.' That's what I do. You know, I don't care about the people's choice, what people think about it. I only focus on the time people need food. That's my point. I cook for them.' As she works in her new restaurant, Hana, she feels fortunate that she could pay it forward. 'I never expect a return when you're helping people. It come from your heart just to help … But you know, when you go do good things, sooner or later it will come back to you. That's what I believe.' VOX POPULI: East and West converged in the life of Hana Glover Bennett
The former residence of Thomas Blake Glover in the Glover Garden in Nagasaki in October 2024 (Asahi Shimbun file photo) This is the story of a remarkable woman. Hana Glover Bennett was born in Nagasaki in 1876, at the dawn of the Meiji Era (1868-1912). Her father, Thomas Blake Glover (1838-1911), was a Scottish merchant who played a pivotal role in Japan's modernization during the final years of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the early Meiji Era. His former home, known as Glover House, still stands in Nagasaki. Hana's mother was his Japanese common-law wife, Tsuru. Lovingly raised in a cross-cultural household, Hana married a British merchant employed by a trading firm in Nagasaki. She was 21 at the time—shortly after the end of the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). When her husband was later transferred to present-day Incheon, a key port city on the western coast of the Korean Peninsula, Hana accompanied him. She would spend the rest of her life in that distant land, as chronicled in 'The Glover Family' by Brian Burke-Gaffney. I first learned about Hana from Ikuko Toda, a 65-year-old writer and translator based in South Korea. Last month, I visited the Incheon Gwandong Gallery, a space for exhibitions and cultural exchange that she operates in Incheon. There, she showed me a collection of photographs left behind by the Glover family. Among them were rare and valuable images capturing the city as it appeared before Korea became a Japanese colony. One striking photograph depicts a mansion perched on a hill overlooking the port, once home to Hana and her family. The building, later destroyed during the Korean War (1950-1953), had stood amid blooming rose bushes. It was there that Hana and her husband raised four children. 'It was a time of great upheaval,' Toda reflected. 'Even those with wealth and privilege must have faced deep uncertainty about the future.' In one faded photograph, Hana appears in traditional Korean dress, seated atop a yellow cow, her gaze fixed intently on something beyond the frame. Her eyes are haunting—quiet yet piercing. In that bustling port city where the shadows of East Asian history converged, what occupied her thoughts? What did she feel? Sadly, almost none of her words have survived. A few years before Japan declared war on Britain in 1941, Hana passed away at the age of 61. She still rests in the foreign cemetery in Incheon. Amid the hush of surrounding greenery, her white tombstone bears a name—HANA—clearly etched into the stone. On a bright, clear day, the inscription stands out in sharp relief. —The Asahi Shimbun, May 14 * * * Vox Populi, Vox Dei is a popular daily column that takes up a wide range of topics, including culture, arts and social trends and developments. Anime Tearjerker Wolf Children returns to theaters this Mother's Day — But it's not the movie you think it is
credit- IMDb This unflinching, Japanese animated drama about a down-on-her-luck, single-mom werewolf raising her wolf children is returning to U.S. theaters for a short special run — and it will absolutely destroy your soul. Wolf Children delivers the antidote, though—a transcendent, tragic, wrenching anime love story about loss and the lengths a mother—with no visible means of support—will go to in order to provide for her children, who just happen to be half wolf. Operation Sindoor Amid flare-up hours after thaw, officials say things will settle down with time Ceasefire on, but pressure stays: Key decisions by India against Pak that still stand 'Will work with India & Pakistan to seek solution on Kashmir': Trump GKIDS , the American distributor of all the cool anime you wish you'd seen in theaters over the last few years, is bringing Mamoru Hosoda 's heartwarming epic family odyssey Wolf Children back to theaters for a special three-day engagement — May 11 to 13, right before Mother's Day weekend. It's all part of a larger, country-wide re-release for Hosoda's anime classics, as other 4K versions continue to come down the pike, along with digital re-launces. If you're in the mood for a lovely little family film though, consider yourself warned — this one will knock you on your ass and kick you in the teeth in all the right ways. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Website Builder — Create a Website in Minutes — Shopify Shopify Get Offer Undo Caring for a toddler is not only incredibly difficult and draining Wolf Children is a lovely fantasy romance, in which we meet Hana, a young woman who falls in love with a man who is able to turn himself into a wolf. After a horrific accident takes his life, Hana is left to raise their two children — Yuki and Ame, who both inherit their father's wolf-shifting abilities. With no one to guide her and no manual for how to raise half-wolf, half-human kids, Hana is going to have to figure it all out by herself. From hiding their identity in the metropolis to starting anew in a small rural hamlet, Hana suffers as much as any mother does in attempting to shield her offspring from all adversity and in doing everything that's in her strength to provide for them a good future. Why It's the best (and spookiest) Mother's day movie On a superficial level, Wolf Children is just like every other animated movie . It's a brilliant, emotional dive into the life of a young mom, intimately and authentically depicting the harsh reality of what it means to be a young, single mother. In that way it is raw, it is real. Butch, but tender, Hana drives herself to becoming brittle, which erodes her own health and happiness, in order to help her children flourish — even as they grow in opposite directions: one deeper toward the human world, the other toward the wild. These juxtaposed moments are equally laced with beauty and joy and deep heartache. As the story unfolds and explores richly the themes of identity and grief, motherhood and release, the impact is felt. Given the emotional weight of this story, the impact feels especially strong on Mother's Day — making for a homecoming filled with equal parts irony and heartbreak. Beautiful animation with a badass mission Produced by Studio Chizu with directors Mamoru Hosoda and Kaho Honda, Wolf Children features some of the loveliest artwork you'll ever see—from verdant, spacious woodlands and deep, foggy mountains, to cozy, welcoming homes. The children's shapeshifting sequences are spellbinding and mythical, representing the deep emotional distress and inner struggle that they face. Hana's character design — frazzled, hollowed-out, but somehow always inches away from a smile — is a subtle visual metaphor for the burdens mothers quietly carry. Showing both the magic and the heartbreak of being parents to kids that challenge the world's assumptions, Rajsvanshi gets at the very real experience of watching her children grow and develop, while walking the razor's edge of a society that still hasn't learned to embrace them. Where to watch Wolf Children Wolf Children will be screening at 25 different U.S. cities on May 11-13. To see the full list of participating venues and showtimes, visit GKIDS' official website. This new re-release is just the tip of GKIDS' present endeavor to bring Mamoru Hosoda's astounding anime filmography – as well as other Japanese works, mind you – back to theaters and home digital and video formats in the U.S., with even more theatrical re-releases of both Summer Wars and The Boy and the Beast coming soon. Is it worth seeing in theaters? Suffice it to say, if you've never seen Wolf Children, this very limited re-return is the best possible opportunity to find out what makes it so special. Whether you're a lifelong anime fan, or just looking for a deeply affecting movie experience that honors the extraordinary nature of motherhood, this film is everything you've dreamed of and then some. Perhaps it doesn't have you crying from laughter as most Mother's Day outings do — but pack your boxes of tissues because it will stick with you way after the credits roll.
