Alma Randolph Foundation gifts domestic abuse survivor new furniture for home

OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — On Wednesday, the Alma Randolph Foundation blessed its 85th family in Owensboro. A year after deciding it was time for a fresh start, a mother who escaped domestic abuse is gifted furniture for her apartment. Keisha Basham and her three daughters are overwhelmed with emotion after returning to an apartment filled with a washer and dryer, all-new furniture and a new tv. 'Joy…It's number one. We've never had anything new,' Basham. The Hands Up To Succeed Project (H.U.T.S) focuses on improving living conditions for underprivileged families. Basham was nominated by her employer shared noticing the hard work she's put in to change her situation. Basham is a survivor of domestic abuse and says getting to a better place, both literally and figuratively, was a struggle. They've alternated between living with her mother and returning to the place she'd been trying to escape. Oasis celebrates 10 years of care in Evansville 'It was a struggle to get out of that… finally get out of it. It took 15 years. We finally did it last year. We finally said 'enough is enough',' says Basham. A couple in Elizabethtown donated the daughters' bedding. 'The wife pulled me aside and said 'my husband and I would like to talk to you'. I thought 'oh, well, what's going on?'. They handed me an envelope and they said 'we want to support a H.U.T.S project,'' says Alma Randolph Crump of the Alma Randolph Foundation. Jill Jones lost her father last year and gathered donations for the foundation as an alternative to flowers. With that donation, a tv was bought. Basham says the experience has been a lesson in keeping a positive mindset and never giving up. '…hopefully me and my girls can help another recipient with their new fresh start,' says Basham.
