ChatGPT Asked If Boomers Are Right About Millennials—It Doesn't Hold Back

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Two millennial moms who felt tired of the negative tropes about their generation decided to take matters into their own hands by asking ChatGPT what it thinks—and the responses did not disappoint. Like many other millennials (people born between 1981 and 1996), entrepreneurs Miranda Hann and Lexi Silva came of age during a time of economic and political uncertainty, and it's taking its toll. Indeed, Hann, 33, of Florida, believes that systematic failures have left her generation struggling to afford what were once considered necessities. She told Newsweek that millennials were "promised the world and left wanting." Over time, the two moms have become increasingly exhausted by older generations hating on millennials. They've put up with the negative stereotypes about millennials supposedly being lazy, entitled, and bad with money, but now the duo has finally had enough. They decided to ask ChatGPT, the generative artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI, whether it thinks millennials are as lazy as baby boomers (people born between 1946 and 1964) think. The instruction sent to OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, asking it to analyze baby boomers and millennials. The instruction sent to OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, asking it to analyze baby boomers and millennials. @_simplifiedsocial / Instagram "We decided to ask ChatGPT about millennials and if we were set up for failure because we know so many people who are equally frustrated and sick of the system," Hann said. She continued: "ChatGPT analyzed and confirmed that millennials have little to no support, are making less money but spending more to afford the same standard of living boomers afforded with half the salary and confirmed that boomers are completely out of touch with reality." There were several explanations provided by ChatGPT, including that boomers were "born into the golden cheat code" because a single income used to buy a house and the job market was more stable back then, that boomers "broke the ladder behind them" by deregulating the housing market and burdening people with student debt, and that they got "financially fat and morally fragile." Newsweek has contacted OpenAI via email for comment. Hann and Silva, also 33, couldn't have agreed more with what the AI chatbot had to say. In their initial instruction, they asked ChatGPT for unvarnished honesty because they feel "tired of their gaslighting." Well, ChatGPT really didn't hold back. The responses were provided in a sassy and human-like tone, which Silva explains is because they have spent over a year training ChatGPT to use their "tone and brand voice." Silva told Newsweek: "We weren't shocked at Chat's sass because we trained her that way. Our favorite line she came up with was, 'you built the bridge then made us pay the toll, Frank.'" They shared the response in a video on social media (@_simplifiedsocial) and the clip went viral with over 3.7 million views and more than 181,000 likes at the time of writing. There were of course plenty of boomers who weren't too happy with their portrayal, but Silva said that many millennials felt validated by the video. They have connected with countless people who feel that the system is dooming them to failure, so Hann and Silva wanted to speak out. "The American dream of a white picket fence, car, affordable living, and two kids isn't realistic or attainable anymore," Silva said. "Families used to survive on one salary and live comfortable middle-class lives. But now, parents work full-time or have multiple jobs, kids go to daycares (which cost a kidney), mortgages are an entire paycheck. We're all just trying to survive—there's no thriving anymore." Since the video went viral on Instagram, it has amassed over 3,200 comments already. One comment reads: "ChatGPT will always be that girl." Another Instagram user wrote: "Dang, ChatGPT left no crumbs *mic drop*." While another person added: "Well said. Sidenote: ChatGPT definitely identifies as a millennial." Dollar-store billionaire poised to emerge from Malaysia IPO

[KUALA LUMPUR] A discount chain with signature red storefronts has drawn legions of Malaysians looking for good deals – and made its founder a billionaire. Eco-Shop Marketing, which operates more than 350 dollar stores across Malaysia, is on track to complete its initial public offering (IPO) in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (May 23) – the country's biggest this year. The listing will value the company at about US$1.5 billion, meaning its founder and controlling shareholder, Lee Kar Whatt, will end up with a US$1.15 billion stake, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Eco-Shop's growth over the last two fiscal years, with revenue increasing more than 50 per cent, reflects the demand for cheap everyday goods at a time of rising inflation, said Zhu Hann Ng, founder and chief executive officer of Tradeview Capital, a fund manager in Kuala Lumpur. 'Fixed-price retailers became a first choice,' Hann said, referring to the RM2.60 (S$0.61) price tag on all products in Eco-Shop stores in peninsular Malaysia. (Products sold in Malaysia's two states on Borneo cost RM2.80.) Lee, who's 51, will remain in charge. He declined to be interviewed. He opened the chain's first store in 2003 with his brother and a pair of other people. He still works out of the company's headquarters in Jementah – a small town that's a three-hour drive southeast of Kuala Lumpur. Sign Up Sign Up Even before Eco-Shop grew into a nationwide chain, Lee was well-known in the Chinese-Malaysian business community for his charitable engagements, Hann said. In 2023, Lee was captured on a rare photo handing a RM1 million check to the Turkish ambassador to Malaysia, meant for the victims of the earthquakes that devastated parts of southern Turkey. Creador, a private equity firm, took a 10 per cent stake in the company in 2019, at which point it had more than 100 stores. But Eco-Shop faces competition from established rivals, such as Mr DIY Group (M), as well as smaller upstarts run by entrepreneurs from mainland China, Hann said. 'We feel the market in Malaysia is quite saturated' and the company's 'upside is capped', he said. Tradeview declined to buy Eco-Shop shares as part of the offering. For its part, Eco-Shop says in its prospectus that there's significant room to grow. It plans to open approximately 70 new stores annually for the next five years. BLOOMBERG

Crowd rallies at Wilmington Social Security office in latest 'Hands Off' protest

A crowd gathered outside of Wilmington's Social Security office on Thursday, April 24, with one clear message -- "Hands Off of Social Security." "We got a call ... to action from Social Security Works, which is a national organization," Della Hann, leader with Brunswick Indivisible Stepping Forward for Action, said standing outside of the Social Security Office on S. 16th Street. "They asked that we show our support ... and that's why we're here, showing our support not only for Social Security as the entity but also for the workers. ... We're fully behind them and we want them to keep their jobs." Thursday's demonstration comes in the wake of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump administration initiative headed by billionaire Elon Musk, terminating several leases for Social Security offices nationwide, amongst other recent changes. In her hands, Hann held a letter shared by Social Security Works signed by 110 U.S. congressional representatives, urging that all Social Security field offices remain open and that the program continue. Hann said she attempted to deliver the letter to the local field office, but they didn't have the appropriate staff to accept it, though it has already been delivered to the national office. "The economics of our entire region really would be in serious jeopardy if (Social Security) was destroyed in any kind of way or lessened," Hann said. "Retirement now is a huge part of this area of North Carolina in terms of its livelihood. Many of us, including myself, have come here to retire because it's such a gorgeous area. We would have to rethink those strategies if we can't have in our arsenal a piece of Social Security that we've paid for." Thursday's protest is one of several associated with the "Hands Off" movement in the Port City. Here's more on other recent related demonstrations in the Wilmington area. On Saturday, April 19, a crowd gathered in Wilmington's Innes Park outside of City Hall, critiquing the current presidential administration and Elon Musk. The event was a public demonstration aimed at protesting what organizers called "arbitrary and capricious political, personal, and discriminatory cuts being made in order to give millionaires and billionaires another tax break off the backs of working Americans." Lynn Shoemaker, vice president with the North Carolina American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations, opened the community town hall, which then featured three-minute vignettes from numerous community members. Protestors held signs with messages including "Hands Off Everything," "The U.S. Rule of Law is Dead," and "Stop the Billionaire Takeover," reflecting a wide range of concerns. Prior coverage: Hundreds attend anti-Trump 'Hands Off' protests in downtown Wilmington, Brunswick County Two weeks prior to the community town hall in Innes Park, hundreds protested across New Hanover and Brunswick counties on April 5. Organizers estimated roughly 1,100 attended the rally in Wilmington, which took place just blocks away from the N.C. Azalea Festival downtown. Organizer Sam Pierce previously told the StarNews the event was just the beginning of what he hoped would become a larger gesture on par with the Civil Rights and labor movements. Spotted in the crowd was Randy Blythe, vocalist of the Grammy-nominated metal band Lamb of God. 'I believe that the U.S. government is slowly but methodically being taken over by technological oligarchs who are attempting to do their best to dismantle the mechanisms of democracy to remain in power perpetually if at all possible,' Blythe said. Outside of the Brunswick County Courthouse in Bolivia, more than 800 people attended another Hands Off protest on the same day. Organizer Shelley Allen previously told the StarNews that a variety of issues motivated the crowd to attend, including cuts made to the federal workforce and healthcare programs. Shocking new details emerge in killing of British man 'lynched and burned alive' in Ecuador

More information has come out in the case of a British man who was lynched and burned alive in Ecuador. The man had been in an Ecuadorian police station after being accused of murder before being dragged out of the building and violently killed by a crowd of locals. He had been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a man named Rodrigo Chavez on 20 April, and while he was in custody in Sucumbíos - an area on the country's border with Colombia - an armed group of around 200 people stormed the building and dragged him out. The man is thought to have died around six hours after he was seized by the mob, with the police saying in a statement that officers did not have the numbers to intervene and had faced threats from the crowd to burn down the entire building. They said: "The police did everything humanly possible to safeguard the person who had been apprehended over the shooting. "Unfortunately the size of the mob exceeded the capacities of the seven police officers who were at the scene. "There had been problems between the two men that died. The man we believe to be British had shot a local man, causing his death." According to the Daily Mail, the Brit was named locally as Michael Hann. He had allegedly fallen out with his business partner - Chavez - when their travel company started having financial problems. The Mail reports that Chavez accused Hann of taking customer's money and putting it into his own pocket instead of company accounts. Hann allegedly shot Chavez dead while the man was 'drunk and half asleep' in the street after a night out, for which he was soon afterwards assaulted by locals before police arrived to arrest him. The area is known for crime rates and Ecuadorean authorities announced that a state of emergency was in place after over 150 people were killed in the region in 2024. While Hann and Chavez may have set up a travel company, the UK's Foreign Office advises against 'all but essential travel' to the region and the areas around the border between Ecuador and Colombia. They cite 'the presence of organised crime linked to the production and trafficking of drugs' as a reason for people to steer well clear of the area, and of course the deaths of these two men are another couple added to the toll. LADbible has contacted the Foreign Office for further comment.
