Yoga Week launched in Kashi with mass session at Namo Ghat

Varanasi: In the run-up to the 11th International Yoga Day on June 21, International Yoga Week commenced with a grand inaugural event at Namo Ghat on Sunday. As part of the week-long celebration, yoga sessions were also held at educational institutions, public parks, ghats, jails, and village panchayats across the district.
The inauguration ceremony at Namo Ghat was graced by several dignitaries, including MLA Neelkanth Tiwari, MLCs Hansraj Vishwakarma and Dharmendra Singh, District Panchayat President Poonam Maurya, Divisional Commissioner S Rajalingam, District Magistrate Satyendra Kumar, and Chief Development Officer Himanshu Nagpal.
Speaking on the occasion, public representatives and yoga experts underlined the transformative potential of yoga in fostering a healthier and more conscious society.
The yoga practice session was led by instructors Ashish Upadhyay, Abhay Swabhimani, and Raksha Kaur, who guided participants through standard yoga protocols.
Simultaneous yoga events were conducted at all ghats, Amrit Sarovars, parks, block headquarters, district jail, and panchayats under the joint coordination of the AYUSH department and various yoga institutions. These included Shrimad Bhagwat Yoga Institute, Gayatri Peeth, Patanjali, Om Yoga Fitness Center, DS Group, Dhanwantari Karmyog Peeth, Brahma Kumaris, Govardhan Peeth, and Varanasi Yoga School.

At the Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital, the yoga week events were inaugurated by Principal Prof Neelam Gupta. Under the coordination of Dr Vijay Kumar Rai, a special yoga session featured mass participation from students, teachers, doctors, and staff. Exercises included Surya Namaskar, Pranayama, and various asanas.
Prof Gupta, in her keynote address, remarked, "Yoga is not just physical exercise but a holistic lifestyle that supports mental peace, physical well-being, and spiritual growth.
The integration of Ayurveda and yoga is key to achieving complete health."
Dr Rai added that the objective of International Yoga Day is to build awareness and acceptance of yoga among the youth and the wider society, highlighting yoga's role in disease prevention and wellness promotion.
The event concluded with a collective Om chanting and peace prayer. Media in-charge Dr Ajay Kumar informed that from June 15 to June 21, daily events such as group yoga practices, seminars, slogan competitions, awareness rallies, and street plays will be organised district-wide as part of the celebrations.
