Jacksonville LGBTQ+ advocate ‘disgusted' by local Republican club Facebook post

LGBTQ+ advocates respond with outrage after a Facebook post from a local Republican group appeared to tie Pride Month to notorious criminals, including serial killers and sex offenders. The post, shared by the Mandarin Republican Club, included the caption: 'Happy Pride Month. So glad our Acosta Bridge was lit in their honor.' Below were images of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky, and a Georgia couple convicted of sexually assaulting their children. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< Also included in the post was a photo of Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan with Andrew Gillum, a former Florida gubernatorial candidate who was involved in a sex scandal but never faced any criminal charges. LGBTQ+ community leader James Eddy called the post offensive and hateful. 'In this day and age, people on Facebook feel like they can put anything,' Eddy said. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] 'It's sad that it came from the Republican Party.' Eddy said he 'really was disgusted… the fact that you associate Pride—because they said 'Happy Pride' in it—with pictures of like Jeffrey Dahmer.' The post appeared to criticize a peaceful protest where supporters lit up the Acosta Bridge with flashlights. That protest was in response to a state ban on lighting public structures in specific colors, which LGBTQ+ advocates believe targets Pride celebrations. 'You know, when something is taken away, you try to fight against it,' Eddy added. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] After Action News Jax began asking questions, the post was deleted. The Duval County Republican Party responded with a statement: 'We did not push it out. We did not approve it. We did not sanction it.' Attempts to contact the head of the Mandarin Republican Club were unsuccessful. The mayor's office declined to comment. As of now, it is still unclear who within the Mandarin Republican Club was responsible for the post. How Nick Offerman responded to a homophobic meme of his 'Parks and Rec' character

Ron Swanson once had some harsh words for frozen yogurt, calling it the "celery of desserts." But actor Nick Offerman had even harsher words for Michael Flynn Jr. The son of former national security advisor Michael Flynn adapted a "Parks and Recreation" meme of Offerman's character to diss Pride Month. A popular animated GIF of Offerman on the show, set in the fictional Pawnee, Indiana, shows his character throwing his computer in a dumpster. The version Flynn Jr. posted to X has a rainbow flag over the computer. Offerman wasn't having it. "Ron was best man at a gay wedding you dumb f---. #HappyPride," Offerman wrote in response to Flynn's post. Offerman has a long history of calling out homophobia. A decade ago, after then-Gov. Mike Pence signed the Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act into law, he and his wife, Megan Mullaly, canceled an Indiana stop on their tour. Offerman also had a solo show scheduled at Indiana University, and he kept that date, donating his proceeds to the Human Rights Campaign. Advocates were concerned that Indiana's RFRA law would allow discrimination against LGBTQ+ people under the guise of protecting the right to practice religion. In 2023, the "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning" actor starred in an acclaimed episode of "The Last of Us" as Bill, a gruff survivalist who falls in love with Frank, played by Murray Bartlett. Speaking with i News, Offerman shared that he received "a lot of homophobic hate" about the episode via social media, despite critics hailing it as a highlight of the season. When Offerman won a Film Independent Spirit Award for the role in 2024, he called out this homophobic hate in his speech. "When homophobic hate comes my way and says, 'Why did you have to make it a gay story?' we say, 'Because you ask questions like that,'" he said, adding, "It's not a gay story, it's a love story." Horrified to learn that the computer knows who he is, and that his home appears on Google Maps, Ron takes his computer outside and throws it in the dumpster. Nick Offerman blasts Michael Flynn's son for using Parks and Rec clip in homophobic post

Parks and Recreation star Nick Offerman eviscerated Michael Flynn Jr., the son of Donald Trump's former National Security Advisor, over a recent homophobic post on X. On Monday, the first day of Pride Month, Flynn Jr. shared an edited clip from Parks and Recreation of Offerman's curmudgeonly Ron Swanson angrily chucking an old computer monitor into the garbage — except the monitor had been replaced with a rainbow Pride flag. 'Good morning and Happy Sunday! No quotes today. Just wanted to post how I feel about 'pride' month,' Flynn Jr. wrote. 'Ron was best man at a gay wedding you dumb f***. #HappyPride,' Offerman, 54, replied, referencing the series finale, in which Ron served as the best man at the wedding between his hairdresser Typhoon (Rodney To) and Pawnee Parks staffer Craig (Billy Eichner). His response came as the cast of Parks and Recreation responded to the death of their co-star Jonathan Joss, who was killed outside his burned-down home Sunday after an alleged campaign of homophobic harassment against him and his new husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales. 'The cast has been texting together about it all day and we're just heartbroken,' Offerman told People in a statement. 'Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.' Throughout the seven-season sitcom, Ron was known for his allyship to the LGBTQ+ community. Offerman, who later starred as a gay man in a standalone 2023 episode of The Last of Us, previously denounced the homophobia that his storyline generated. 'Thanks to HBO for having the guts to participate in this storytelling tradition that is truly independent,' the actor said in his 2024 Independent Spirit Awards acceptance speech for best supporting performance in a new scripted series. 'Stories with guts that when homophobic hate comes my way and says, 'Why did you have to make it a gay story?' We say, 'Because you ask questions like that. It's not a gay story it's a love story, you asshole!' Flynn Jr. is known for making controversial declarations on X. In 2017, he slammed the Women's March in Washington, writing: 'What victory? Women already have equal rights, and YES equal pay in this country. What MORE do you want? Free mani/pedis?' The previous year, he and his father, retired U.S. Army lieutenant general Michael Flynn Sr., made headlines for spreading fake news numerous times. Many of their X posts involved conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and their allies. Flynn Sr. served as Trump's National Security Advisor for 22 days during his first term as president. However, he swiftly resigned after it was revealed that he misled former Vice President Mike Pence and other top White House officials about his conversations with Russia's ambassador to the United States.

Nick Offerman Called Out A Homophobic Internet Troll Who Dared To Use A Ron Swanson GIF In An Anti-Pride Tweet

It's Pride month!!! Now, for most everyone, it's a joyful time of year — full of celebration, love, and being unapologetically oneself. It's also a time for LGBTQIA+ people and allies to come together, honor history, and have some serious fun. But like clockwork, as soon as the clock strikes 12:00 a.m. on June 1st, the right-wing outrage machines kick into overdrive. Case in point: this tweet from Michael Flynn Jr. (if that name sounds familiar, it's because he is the son of far-right conspiracy theorist Michael Flynn), who, yesterday, used a photoshopped GIF of Parks and Rec's Ron Swanson throwing away a Pride flag to show on X (formerly Twitter) that he is having a hissy fit (someone grab this snowflake a fainting chair!) because it's Pride: Good morning and Happy Sunday! No quotes wanted to post how I feel about 'pride' month. — Michael Flynn Jr (@realmflynnJR) June 1, 2025 NBC / Via Twitter: @realmflynnJR Now, like I mentioned, this is photoshopped, as in the scene — which has become a popular meme — Ron was throwing away his computer. Well, earlier today, Ron Swanson himself, Nick Offerman (who is a huge ally of the LGBTQIA+ community), clapped back at Flynn Jr. by calling him a dumb fuck and pointing out that Ron was not a homophobe: Ron was best man at a gay wedding you dumb fuck. #HappyPride — Nick Offerman (@Nick_Offerman) June 2, 2025 NBC / Via Twitter: @Nick_Offerman Nick even pointed out that Ron was the best man at Typhoon and Craig's wedding in the series finale.
