Women's curling team wrap up Asiad with Korea's 16th gold medal

South Korea edged out China in the Harbin Asian Winter Games women's curling event Friday, clinching its 16th gold medal in what has been one of the country's most successful runs in the event. Korea's women's curling team, captained by Gim Eun-ji, defeated the home nation 7-2 at the Harbin Pingfang District Curling Arena in China on Friday. They completed a sweep of the event, going undefeated throughout the knock-out tournament. The last time that Korea won gold for an Asian Games curling event was in 2007. Hopes ran high for Korea to win both the men's and women's curling events, but the men's team fell to the Philippines in the gold-medal match on Thursday. The Philippines pulled away with a 5-3 win, handing Korea their first defeat in the competition. The Korean men's hockey team, who dropped the semifinals match against Japan on Thursday, took home bronze after winning against China on Friday. The women's team, however, fell to Kazakhstan 3-0 in the final match of the round-robin format to finish fourth. Korea surpasses initial goal to finish second overall The women's curling team's gold marked South Korea's 16th gold medal and 44th medal overall in this year's Asian Winter Games, tying the country's record of 16 gold medals won at the 2017 Asian Winter Games. Koreans finished in second place behind China, and comfortably ahead of Japan, in third place with nine gold medals. Korea's performance far surpassed the initial goal of 11 gold medals, even taking some home for events that Korea had never won medals for before. Figure Skater Cha Jun-hwan took a surprise win Thursday in his first Asian Winter Games appearance. Crowned champion of the men's singles event, he became the first Korean male figure skater to win a medal at the Asian Games. Earlier in the day, his teammate Kim Chae-yeon upset three-time world champion Kaori Sakamoto in the figure skating women's singles event for her first Asian Game gold medal. It was the first time Korea won both the men's and women's singles figure skating events at the Asian Winter Games. Ekaterina Avvakumova, a naturalized Korean who was born in Russia, won the country's first-ever biathlon gold in the women's 7.5 kilometer run on Tuesday. She won her second medal of the event when her team won silver for the women's 4 by 6 kilometer relay on Thursday. Another surprise win of the Asian Games belonged to snowboarder Kim Geon-hui, who won a gold medal for the men's halfpipe event after the finals scheduled for Thursday were cancelled due to blustery weather conditions at the venue. He was awarded the win based his qualification score of 78.00 points. Kim's compatriot Lee Chae-un, who lost out on a chance to compete for a gold at his primary event, won his first career Asiad win as well with a gold medal in the men's snowboard slopestyle event.

Harbin wonderland welcomes the world

BEIJING, Feb. 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A news report from China Daily: Harbin, capital of Northeast China's Heilongjiang province, is a top destination for domestic and international tourists seeking a spectacular winter adventure. As the host of the ongoing 2025 Harbin Asian Winter Games, the city has prepared an array of innovative events to optimize tourism and meet the expectations of visitors and residents alike. The 26th Harbin Ice and Snow World celebration has welcomed numerous tourists from home and abroad since opening on Dec 21. "The park's design and construction fully integrate elements of the ninth Asian Winter Games, creating a more dazzling ice and snow theme," said Luo Xin, deputy general manager of Harbin Ice and Snow World Park. A series of activities, including an ice harvesting festival, a fantasy show, outdoor performances and ice carving competitions, are all part of the festivities. Whizzing down an over-500-meter ice slide, Zhang Jiajia, a tourist from East China's Zhejiang province, felt like she was flying. "It's super exciting and my heart soared with me," Zhang said. This year's celebration is the largest in Harbin's history, with over 300,000 cubic meters of ice and snow sculpted in nine major zones, recreating landscapes and famous structures from 42 countries and three regions that are members of the Olympic Council of Asia. The structures include the Temple of Heaven in China, Osaka Castle in Japan and the Taj Mahal in India. The park's main attraction — a tower called Love Among Asia — draws inspiration from the official emblem of the OCA. The tower's core maintains a radiant sun shape, representing the vigorous development of Asia and Asian sports. The designers also made innovations in lighting technology to create stunning visual effects, and there is an adjoined super-sized snowflake maze with illuminated ice walls. The paths inside the ice maze feature interactive scenes inspired by the 12 zodiac animals. There are also over 20 carefully designed small ice slides scattered throughout the park, each with beautiful and whimsical designs. Additionally, a series of arts performances in the park are bringing unique experiences to the audience. Sebastian Coe Hails China's Sporting Excellence at Harbin Asian Winter Games

World Athletics President calls China a 'world-class' host and a key partner in global athletics At the Harbin Asian Winter Games, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe praised China's ability to stage world-class sporting events, highlighting the nation's growing influence in the athletics world. Speaking to CGTN's Dai Kaiyi, the former Olympic champion and world record holder expressed his deep connection with China and its role in shaping the future of athletics. China's Hosting Capabilities: 'World-Class' When asked about China's track record in organizing major sporting events, Coe was unequivocal: "China is world-class at staging world-class events. Over the next two years, we have three major World Athletics championships in China—starting with the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing in just a few weeks, followed by the World Relays in Guangzhou. And then, in 2027, Beijing will host the World Championships—the jewel in the crown of global athletics." Coe also reflected on his personal connection to China, recalling that his election as World Athletics President in 2016 took place in Beijing during the World Championships. "I consider China to be my lucky country," he added. China's Athletes: A Rising Force Coe noted the steady rise of Chinese athletes, emphasizing their growing presence on the world stage. He revealed that World Athletics works closely with China's Athletics Federation and National Olympic Committee to develop talent, with his own sports university collaborating with Chinese coaches to create training pathways. "My relationships with China—through World Athletics, my university, and the Olympic Committee—are incredibly strong," he stated. China's Critical Role in World Athletics Looking ahead to a series of major World Athletics events between 2025 and 2027, Coe underscored China's importance to the sport's global growth. "China has more people regularly participating in 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons, and marathons than any other country. It's a huge and growing market for us," he said. Beyond competition, Coe pointed to China's commitment to youth development, praising the government's efforts to use athletics to enhance physical and mental well-being. "China is not just a vital competition host—it's also a key player in expanding participation and improving the health of young people worldwide," he concluded.
