Northland SPCA makes desperate plea for puppy foster homes after being inundated
'We're looking after them all the time because there is no space. 'We're trying to do all we can.' The abandoned animals include Awhi, an emaciated young female dog, who arrived with her seven 3-week old puppies, which had been left behind when their owners moved away. Another four pups were found living under someone's house and four more were dumped at a local vet clinic. A further four puppies were 'severely emaciated to the point that their bodies were rejecting the small amounts of food we gave them, and we didn't think they were going to make it', Harbison said. Yet another pup, Otis, had turned up at someone's house limping and with white paint thrown over him. 'His back leg was broken; we suspect he's been abused and then dumped.' And on Thursday, 11 tiny puppies huddled in a box were dumped at the shelter. Harbison implored Northlanders to 'get your dogs desexed'. 'If people did that, we wouldn't have this issue. 'It's free with the SPCA, so there isn't a reason not to. 'The vouchers are easy, all you have to do is phone. 'You can use the voucher at the vet of your choice. It's not difficult.' Harbison said fostering is a commitment but is also rewarding. Foster parents give pets a temporary home to recover, socialise and get used to living in a home environment. Research also shows that when animals are cared for in foster homes, it's less stressful for them. Foster families have all costs and essential items covered by the animal welfare charity, including food, bedding, toys and any veterinary treatment. If you can foster a puppy, phone 09 407 7515 email or message the SPCA Far North on Facebook.

Audra McDonald Caps a History-Making Week With a Gasp-Inducing Gown
How is Audra McDonald's week going? Try to keep up: On Thursday, she earned her 11th Tony Award nomination for her leading role in the Broadway revival of 'Gypsy,' making her the most-nominated performer in Tony history. Then it was off to fittings for the Met Gala, which she attended on Monday as a member of its starry host committee. In between, she squeezed in five performances as Momma Rose in 'Gypsy' and a trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles to attempt to upgrade to a Real ID. She was told she already had one. 'I'm a little tired,' she said in a phone interview from the West Side Highway on Saturday, en route to the Majestic Theater for the matinee, 'but it's all been very exciting.' She arrived on the Met steps on Monday night in the kind of spotlight-snagging attire that her character, the final boss of stage moms, might appreciate. Beneath a sweeping robe that recalled an opera cape, she wore a crepe column gown the color of custard with satin panniers that swept outward from her waist. Silk florets made of refractive diamanté cords cascaded down its center. When she saw the design, she said, 'I gasped.' The look was created by Charles Harbison, a Los Angeles designer who has also dressed Michelle Obama and Beyoncé. Mr. Harbison, who grew up in North Carolina, said he was inspired by 'Daughters of the Dust,' the 1991 film directed by Julie Dash about Gullah women living off the South Carolina and Georgia coast at the turn of the last century. (Many viewers have also connected the film's distinctive imagery — breezy white skirts, mossy branches arching over a coastline — to Beyoncé's 2016 visual album, 'Lemonade.') Mr. Harbison first saw the film when he was in his early 20s and a student at Parsons School of Design in New York. He was struck by how much it reminded him of the matriarchs in his life, he said, who all 'had this inherent, utilitarian elegance.' Ms. McDonald was not short on elegance, either. 'There is this kind of Venus-like sensibility I think she carries, this queenlike sort of dignity that I just think is so gorgeous,' Mr. Harbison said in a phone interview. Last week he met Ms. McDonald in her dressing room at 11 p.m. after a two-show day to fit her in a muslin prototype of the gown. (He remembers her being regal yet welcoming. She remembers being sweaty.) Ms. McDonald, the first Black woman to play Rose on Broadway, said it was especially meaningful to be on the host committee of a Met Gala whose exhibition focuses on the legacy of Black dandyism and the influence of Black style. 'It seems like there are certain elements in our country right now that are trying to erase our history,' she said. Dandyism may be luxurious and beautiful, she said, but at its core, it is an act of resistance. 'Resistance is creativity is resistance,' she said. 'And I love that in this era.'

The Irish man who turned dog days on Koh Samui into a rescue story to reduce Thailand's strays
His daily efforts to rescue ill and injured street dogs on Thailand 's Koh Samui have captured the affection of many online – even earning a permanent home for a stray with Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher. Advertisement Now Niall Harbison has a bigger dream: to reduce the street dog population across all of Thailand by half and, eventually, expand his efforts worldwide. 'It's a big goal, but I believe it's possible – with sterilisation, education and community collaboration. If we can do it on an island like Samui, we can do it nationwide,' Harbison told This Week in Asia from his Happy Doggo centre on the southern island. His dog saving days attract hundreds of thousands of social media followers, starting with early morning feeding for 1,200 canines who line quiet island roads, waiting expectantly for their breakfast. On his rounds, he often discovers rescues – scared abandoned puppies, injured or sick animals. Back at his centre, volunteers arrive early to walk the dogs or prepare the 250kg of food needed for daily feeding. Liam Gallagher adopted a rescue dog named Buttons. Photo: Instagram/ 'It's hard, nonstop work,' said Harbison, who is from Ireland but started his dog work on the Thai island more than three years ago.

Rep. Corey Harbison resigns from Alabama House
Rep. Corey Harbison, R-Cullman, in the chamber of the Alabama House of Representatives on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. Harbison resigned from the House of Representatives on Tuesday after rare attendance over the last three legislative sessions. (Stew Milne/Alabama Reflector) Rep. Corey Harbison, R-Cullman, resigned from the Alabama House of Representatives on Tuesday after being largely absent from the 2025 Legislative Session. Harbison served in the Legislature for 10 years and sent a one sentence resignation letter to the House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, R-Rainsville. 'Mr. Speaker, Please accept this letter as formal notification of my resignation from Alabama House District 12,' Harbison wrote. According to Alabama Political Reporter, Harbison had not attended much of the last three legislative sessions despite being marked present and voting on legislation. Harbison said family responsibilities had kept him away. The resignation will lead to a special election, though Gov. Kay Ivey had not yet set the election as of early Thursday afternoon. The district is strongly Republican. Harbison took over 85% of the vote in his re-election campaign in 2022.
