Revenue official caught taking bribe; arrested
Lucknow: A land measurement officer posted in the consolidation department of Prayagraj was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 by the Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment on Wednesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to officials, a senior audit officer at the principal accountant general's office approached the department alleging illegal encroachment on his land by two locals, Dharmendra Kumar and Sanjay Kumar. Despite prior measurements ordered by consolidation authorities, one of the accused allegedly manipulated the process to submit a second report without notice, prompting the complainant to seek a fresh survey of his land. When the complainant visited the office on May 30, the assistant consolidation officer informed him that his request was forwarded to consolidation officer Harendra Singh. Upon meeting Singh, the complainant was allegedly told to pay Rs 10,000 to get the fresh land survey conducted with a "favourable report." This prompted the complainant to approach the vigilance department, which verified the allegations and set up a trap. On June 4, the vigilance team caught Harendra Singh red-handed while accepting ₹10,000 near Katra Police Outpost. He was arrested. The vigilance department has appealed to the public to report bribery or corruption by govt officials via helpline numbers 9454404859 (Prayagraj Sector) or 9454401866 (Headquarters).

India look for the missing drag-flicking piece
New Delhi: Ever since Harendra Singh joined the Indian women's hockey team a year back, the chief coach has stressed on bettering the conversion rate in the striking circle. While the forwards do their best to score field goals, a team can only reach the top with the finest drag-flickers which had gone missing from the Indian setup. While Gurjit Kaur did the job for India in the past, especially in the run-up and during Tokyo Olympics, India's goal scoring rate during penalty corners (PC) has gone down drastically in recent times. Harendra's main aim since joining the team last summer was to build a pool of drag-flickers who could make the difference in the most important moments of matches and tournaments. The 55-year-old first roped in former India drag-flicker and Olympic bronze medallist Rupinder Pal Singh to hone the skills of the 5-6 PC specialists chosen by him. Harendra then brought in Dutch drag-flick legend Taeke Taekema to convert the drag-flickers into a potent force. 'Taeke is permanently with us. Whenever our camp starts, he always comes for two weeks. He is also going to join us in London,' said Harendra. 'We don't have a full time drag-flick coach because if you are drag-flicking all the time, the chances of injury really increases. So, you don't require it everyday. Otherwise, there is a high percentage of the glute and groin getting injured.' To further improve the Indian drag-flickers skills, Harendra had sent Deepika Sehrawat and Manisha Chauhan for a 10-day camp to Amsterdam under Dutch penalty corner expert Toon Siepman. The drag-flick trainer is also the coach of 2024 FIH Player of the Year and Olympic gold medallist Yibbi Jansen of the Netherlands, who top-scored with nine goals at the Paris Games last year. 'Deepika and Manisha went to Amsterdam 10 days before the rest of the team to train under Siepman, who is one of the world's best drag-flick coaches. We joined them in the Netherlands,' said Harendra. The team will train in the Dutch city till June 8 before heading to London for their first four matches against Australia and Argentina in the European leg of the Pro League. India will first take on Australia on June 14 and 15 followed by matches against Argentina on June 17 and 18. The team will then travel to Antwerp for their next two matches against Belgium on June 21 and 22 before concluding the tour with two matches against China on June 28 and 29 in Berlin.

FIH Pro League: Indian team ready for tough matches in Europe, says Harendra
With the second half of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 fast approaching, Harendra Singh, head coach of the Indian women's hockey team, is charting the course for his team currently situated in sixth place on the points table. According to Harendra, the Indian team did reasonably well in the home leg of the FIH Pro League and is getting ready to take on some tough opponents in Europe. "The upcoming matches of the FIH Hockey Pro League in Europe will see the Indian women's hockey team play some tough opponents, and the team is definitely ready for it. When we go into the FIH Hockey Pro League in Europe, it will be after our tour of Australia, which is a great form of preparation, because match-practice and game time are both very valuable and will always benefit any team," Harendra told the FIH in an interview in the buildup for the next stage in the Pro League. Harendra said his players will benefit from the experience of playing in the home leg of the Pro League, which included a massive shootout win against World No.1 and Olympic champion Netherlands. "The team did well in the home leg, especially the shootout win against the Netherlands was a massive confidence booster for the team. And as we go into the European leg, the experience and knowledge from the previous phase will definitely benefit the team. We will be playing across three different venues in London, Antwerp and Berlin during this time, and the team is working hard. With India set to play Australia, Argentina, Belgium and China in the Pro League, Harendra said going into the league, soon after a tour of Australia, would hold his team in good stead. "Coming from the Australian tour and straight into the FIH Pro League is surely going to be beneficial, but the games in Europe will also be very different in every sense of it. "Australia, Argentina, Belgium and China are all good teams and we aren't taking anything for granted, no matter what the situation is. Our preparations for the FIH Hockey Pro League are moving along at a good pace and we will continue to work towards our goals," said Harendra. The India women's team coach will have to improve its position in the league and remain in the elite competition. The team has lost a lot of steam after the high of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2010 and remaining in the FIH Pro League will help them get more matches against top opponents in future and get back to where they were.

Hockey: Indian women's team looking to end Australia tour on high
New Delhi: On their tour of Australia, the Indian women's hockey team will be hoping to put in a strong performance in the penultimate match. Up against the Australian senior team, the Women in Blue will have their task cut out and have been working hard to ensure the team's performances are of high quality. With one eye on the World Cup next year and the FIH Hockey Pro League in Europe later this year, the Indian team is also trying out new combinations and strategies on this tour of Australia. While India have not registered a win yet on the tour, the final two games represent a big chance to rectify that. India's 26-member squad, led by captain Salima Tete and vice-captain Navneet Kaur, have so far played the Australian senior team once, and despite a spirited performance, they were handed a 0-2 defeat by the hosts in Perth. Before the game against the Australian senior side, the Indian team also played a couple of friendlies against the Australia A side, but were not able to register wins despite gritty and determined performances. Going into the final two games of the tour, chief coach Harendra Singh will be hoping to fix the chinks in the armour and build on the strengths of the side. The Indian team is a healthy mix of experience and youth, and under the leadership of Singh, the squad has made significant progress. While the results in Australia may not have gone the way the team would have liked, the Indian team is looking to build for the future. In attack and in defense, the Indian team has shown plenty of potential already and is well on track in terms of building a solid team for the major tournaments in the future. Speaking on the occasion, Harendra Singh said, "The Indian Women's Hockey Team is working hard behind the scenes to ensure that the squad is a robust one. While we have not had much success in terms of winning games on the tour of Australia, there has been plenty of positives from the performances already." He further added, "The defeats do hurt us, especially when we have conceded soft goals in, but there is nothing that can replace or match up to the intensity of playing these matches. The more games and game time the Indian Women's Hockey Team gets the better it is for the players, especially the younger ones. This tour is of a lot of importance as facing top-quality opposition is extremely crucial for the development of the squad." India will face Australia in the final two games of the tour on May 3 and 4.
