Best looks from the 2025 Met Gala celebrate Black style and tailored elegance
The 2025 Met Gala brought high fashion and cultural storytelling to the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, as celebrities showcased their interpretations of this year's theme, 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.' The exhibit and theme explore Black dandyism and its role in shaping Black identities across the Atlantic diaspora. This year's dress code, 'Tailored for You,' encouraged guests to lean into custom suiting and structured silhouettes, nodding to the enduring legacy of menswear in Black fashion. Notable arrivals included: Teyana Taylor , in a symbolic red pinstripe suit and cape embroidered with 'Harlem Rose.' Colman Domingo , in a layered, pearl-embellished custom Valentino look. Zendaya , channeling '70s glam in a white Louis Vuitton three-piece suit. Diana Ross , in a feather-trimmed silver gown with an epic train. Venus Williams , in a sculptural tailored couture gown. Pharrell Williams , with a sleek spin on dandy dressing. Lewis Hamilton , in head-to-toe white with cowrie shell detailing. Bad Bunny , in custom Prada with a relaxed, sharp vibe. Emma Chamberlain, in a pinstriped asymmetrical Courrèges dress. Gigi Hadid, dripping in gold from head to toe. Sydney Sweeney , in a vintage-inspired beaded Miu Miu gown. Coco Jones , in a bold, high-shouldered black ensemble. Saquon Barkley , embracing clean, confident suiting. Kwame Onwuachi , with culinary cool meets red carpet edge. Sadie Sink, Jodie Turner-Smith, La La Anthony, and Ego Nwodim, all served tailored elegance with unique flair. Jodie Turner-Smith La La Anthony Ego Nwodim Hosting duties were shared by Teyana Taylor, Ego Nwodim, and La La Anthony, all dressed impeccably and perfectly on theme. The Met Gala's 2025 exhibit, inspired by Monica L. Miller's Slaves to Fashion, offers a powerful look at fashion as both resistance and self-expression in the Black diaspora.

Met Gala 2025 live updates: Stars arrive on red carpet for fashion's biggest night
Fashion aficionados, assemble! The 2025 Met Gala is officially here — and the stars are starting to arrive on the Metropolitan Museum of Art's red carpet. Taking place in New York City's Upper East Side, the annual costume benefit sets the stage for some of the most talked about fashion moments for years to come. Each year, on the first Monday of May, attendees put on high-fashion displays in their carefully curated and often custom designer looks. With a guestlist handpicked by Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour, a who's who of influential figures from celebrities and designers to athletes and philanthropists, will ascend up the iconic Met steps in showstopping garments while posing for photographers along the way. A celebration of menswear and suiting, this year's dress code, 'Tailored for You,' is a nod to Black Dandyism and the significance of fashion in the 'formation of Black identities.' Expect to see a slew of celebrities, including Met Gala cochairs Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton and A$AP Rocky, put on dapper displays of fashion. Vogue's livestream of the red carpet is set to kick off at 6 p.m. ET. Check out Yahoo Entertainment's live coverage of the star-studded gala below. Comptroller Brad Lander, who is vying to be New York City's next mayor, was joined on the red carpet by daughter Rosa Lander, who wore a jacket with the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union logo on the back. Ruth E. Carter, an Oscar-winning costume designer best known for her work with directors Spike Lee, John Singleton and Ryan Coogler, arrived at the Met Gala alongside Teyana Taylor. Carter helped collaborate on the custom Marc Jacobs suit Taylor is wearing. Carter told BET she was inspired by "Harlem Rose," a play on Taylor's song "Rose in Harlem." One side of Taylor's cape says "Harlem Rose" in script. "The pleats represent the opening of the rose," Carter said about Taylor's outfit. "We really wanted to bring the dandyism to life." Sydney Sweeney has officially made her 2025 Met Gala appearance. The 27-year-old actress was spotted leaving the Carlyle Hotel moments before walking the blue carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For this year's Met Gala, Sweeney chose a sparkly black gown with fringed sleeves, a gold embellishment and a keyhole cutout around the bust. Letting the gown speak for itself, the actress kept her jewels to a minimum. The internet believes celebrity couples who choose to make their red carpet debut are cursed. There's Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson, Selena Gomez and the Weeknd, and Paul Mescal and Phoebe Bridgers, who all split shortly after their big moment. Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott, and Elon Musk and Grimes all posed for the first time at the star-studded affair and also are no longer together. Does this mean a couple who choose to debut tonight are doomed? In short: Only if their relationship is on the rocks. These aforementioned pairings had regular relationship problems, not Met Gala problems, as celebrity matchmaker and relationship expert Carmelia Ray explains to Yahoo Entertainment. 'I think the 'Met Gala curse' is more about coincidental timing and makes for great tabloid fodder,' Ray said. 'Relationships don't break up because of a red carpet appearance; they break up because of what's happening behind the scenes. If a couple is already struggling, the spotlight and scrutiny can add pressure, but it's rarely the root cause.' Ray adds, 'Celebrity relationships are already under a microscope, and the extra attention post-Met Gala can add fuel to the fire, but it's not the main reason for a breakup.' The curse may be debunked, but that doesn't mean we won't be celebrating if Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet decide to make things red carpet official. Lewis Hamilton opted for a monochromatic, cream-colored ensemble for this year's Met Gala. The famed race car driver stepped out in a custom Louis Vuitton look that featured a matching beret, as well as intricate, sequin-and-beaded embellishments on his coat. To juxtapose his all-cream look, Hamilton opted for black patent loafers. A men's choir delivered a choreographed performance of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," a 1967 song first sung by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell and later in 1970 by Diana Ross. Met Gala cochair and Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo will likely top "best dressed" lists for this year's benefit. The Sing Sing star arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a show-stopping Valentino ensemble composed of a royal blue cape and an embellished gold chest piece reminiscent of armor. Domingo's look is speculated to be a nod to late fashion journalist and Vogue editor at large, André Leon Talley. A group of pro-Palestinian protesters has gathered on Fifth Avenue, near the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the Met Gala will be hosted later tonight. New York City police officers appear to be monitoring the situation. Last year, a group marched up Fifth Avenue in support of Palestinians and advertised the protest on social media as #DisruptTheMet. Hundreds were outside Hunter College, which is just over a mile away from the Met, with some setting off smoke bombs and flares. It was reported that 27 individuals were taken into custody because of the protests. In 2021, Black Lives Matter supporters protested the Met Gala, and multiple protesters were arrested. We've had our first peek at the Met Gala red carpet and it's not red at all. In fact, it rarely is. This year, with the theme "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," the carpet is dark blue with a floral design. The railing, which separates the fashionistas from the journalists, on the grand staircase is decorated with greenery as well as flowers, similar to 2024. While this is a red carpet event — to Anna Wintour, the red carpet event — simple red just doesn't do for this crowd. In recent years, it's been many different colors and themes. Yahoo Entertainment can confirm that the carpet is again handled by Flemington Department Store in Flemington, N.J. Co-owner Ted Resnick has handled the carpet installation for more than two decades. In 2024, he said he typically uses 63,000 square feet of carpeting for the event. It's then painted by 12 to 15 workers. Resnick said he typically orders the carpet in September so it's ready in time. In 2024, the carpet was off-white with airbrushed green foliage on the sides for the "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" theme. The year before, it was beige-toned with red and blue designs for "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty." For "In America: An Anthology of Fashion" in 2022, it was colored mainly red, with white and blue stripes. The carpet is one piece of the puzzle overseen by event planner Raúl ÁÀvila, who is in charge of event decor. Sometimes that calls for a flamingo centerpiece with 30,000 flowers (2019) or a papal crown centerpiece with 80,000 roses (2018). Nothing is basic at this event, down to the carpet. Vogue's editor in chief and Met gala chair, Anna Wintour, has arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Shedding her signature sunglasses, Wintour, who's been hailed the mother of Met Gala, walked the blue carpet in an embroidered gown with a long, light-blue suit jacket overtop. Her accessories, kept to a minimum, were classically chic — a layered necklace and heart-shaped brooch. Actress and comedian Ego Nwodim has arrived, wearing Christopher John Rogers. She will be cohosting Vogue's livestream of the night with singer Teyana Taylor and actress La La Anthony. Few Met Gala attendees have sparked as much controversy surrounding their choice of attire for the annual fundraiser as Kim Kardashian. The Skims founder attended the benefit in 2022 in a sparkling translucent dress previously worn by Marilyn Monroe. Monroe wore the Bob Mackie- and Jean Louis-designed garment — which has been described by Kardashian as 'the original naked dress' — to serenade President John F. Kennedy on his 45th birthday in 1962. Kardashian told Vogue she wore the original gown only for the red carpet portion of the night. Despite changing into a replica afterward, she also received backlash for the diet she went on to fit into Monroe's dress. 'I'm extremely respectful to the dress and what it means to American history. I would never want to sit in it or eat in it or have any risk of any damage to it and I won't be wearing the kind of body makeup I usually do,' Kardashian said. I'm reporting live from the corner of 77th Street and 5th Avenue in New York City, where onlookers are hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrities leaving the Mark Hotel on their way to the Met Gala. Unfortunately, we see mostly black sprinter vans and umbrellas. — Kelsey Weekman reporting live from the Upper East Side The 2024 Met Gala marked the year Zendaya graced the red carpet with two looks! Also serving as one of the evening's cohosts, the Challengers star, styled by Law Roach, first walked up the Met steps in a custom haute couture look by John Galliano for Maison Margiela: a forest green and deep blue gown made of organza and lamé, which she wore with a matching headpiece and hand-embroidered corsage. Next, Zendaya slipped into a vintage creation: a John Galliano for Givenchy couture gown from its spring 1996 collection. She paired the archival design with a statement headpiece made of vibrant roses. Teyana Taylor has officially arrived. The actress and singer-songwriter stepped onto the Met Gala red carpet in a custom Marc Jacobs look consisting of a gray and crimson pinstripe suit and statement coat-like train with structured shoulders. Taylor paired the look with a feathered hat atop a do-rag, leather gloves, platform heels and a walking stick. Taylor's look stood out in its details: the pleated train, embroidered roses, as well as the words "Harlem Rose" emblazoned in cursive. "Harlem Rose" is likely a nod to the uptown New York City neighborhood in which Taylor was born and raised, as well as her 2018 track "Rose in Harlem." Emma Chamberlain, Vogue's red carpet correspondent for the Met Gala, is headed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The famed YouTuber and "it" girl was photographed leaving the Carlyle Hotel on the Upper East Side in a navy pinstripe gown with a plunging back and rectangular train. The 2025 Met Gala will mark Chamberlain's fifth time taking on hosting duties for Vogue. If there's one celebrity we know will dress to impress at the Met Gala, it's Rihanna. The Fenty Beauty founder hasn't attended the festival since 2023, but she's consistently served showstopping looks over the years. Among Rihanna's greatest Met Gala hits is the luxurious papal moment she had in 2018. Nailing the 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination' theme, the 'Lift Me Up' singer stepped out in an ornate, pearl-and-crystal-encrusted ensemble — a minidress, matching coat and mitre-style hat — designed by John Galliano for Maison Margiela. This year's Met Gala attendees will have to endure rainy weather. Celebs have been spotted taking cover under large umbrellas as they travel to and from hotels like the Carlyle, where many of them will be getting ready for the benefit. Through Monday afternoon and evening, New York City will see "widespread showers and isolated storms," according to the weather forecast. Total rain may reach 1.5 to 2 inches, with gusts of wind up to 25 mph. On X, fans are reacting to the dreary red carpet weather. Looking to tune in and see how all your favorite celebs (and their stylists) have interpreted the 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style' theme? We've got you covered. The 2025 Met Gala red carpet will stream live for free on the Metropolitan Museum of Art's official YouTube page starting at 6 p.m. ET. E! is also providing additional coverage for those with cable (or a live TV streaming package) who want even more Met Gala commentary. Read more: Here's what to know about watching the Met Gala arrivals live Expect A$AP Rocky and Rihanna to be 'Fashion Killas' tonight. The rapper-designer is cochair of the 'Superfine: Tailoring Black Style'-themed event and will attend with his singer-designer 'wife.' They were last at the gala in 2023, when Rihanna was pregnant with their first son, RZA, now 2. Their second son, Riot, 1, was born in 2024, and they sat out the gala that year because Rihanna came down with the flu at the last minute. The Met Ball has long been an important event for Rocky and Rihanna, who made their official couple debut there in 2021. They've pivoted to successful careers in fashion (for both her and him), stretching their artistic wings beyond their musical origins. Rihanna cochaired the gala in 2018 and performed in 2015. Rihanna said this year's theme — inspired by Monica L. Miller's 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, and exploring the importance for sartorial style to the formation of Black identities — is her 'favorite' of all the galas, of which she's attended at least 10. She said it will be a 'celebration of culture [and] history.' There's a bit more pressure on Rihanna and Rocky to bring it style-wise this year after famously tough critic Anna Wintour, who helms the hot-ticket fundraiser in NYC, recently deemed them the most fashionable celebrity couple. Judging from the past, whatever they wear won't be basic. After all, he once sported a colorful quilt (2023) and she dressed like an egg (2015). They're known for fun outfit transformations on the famed staircase, whether it was his quilt drop or her taking off her bouquet cape to reveal her bump. This could have been a very different first Monday of May for the couple. In February, Rocky was found not guilty of gun assault charges, stemming from a dispute with an ex-friend. He faced up to 24 years in prison. Rihanna was unwavering in her support during the trial, even bringing along their babies.
