Seechewal: Get tough on those misusing ground water, polluting Buddha Dariya
Ludhiana: Tough decisions were taken in the review meeting held under the leadership of Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal and attended by Harpreet Singh Atwal, joint secretary, local bodies department, Punjab.
During the meeting, it was observed that effluent treatment plants at Tajpur and Haibowal Dairy Complex were not operating to their optimum capacity and had been fined Rs 3.60 crore in
environment compensation
so far. It was decided to get meters and tanks installed in dairies to stop misuse of groundwater. Officials also expressed concern about the excessive use of motors by dairy owners, which led to wastage of water.
Instructions were issued to fix accountability of
Punjab Pollution Control Board
(PPCB) officials and to take strict action against those found to be negligent. Joint commissioner, municipal corporation, Paramdeep Singh Khaira said that work to stop discharge of waste water from dairies into the Buddha Dariya was being done at a fast pace. He assured that work going on in A and C blocks of the city would be completed by April 27.
PPCB officials were also directed to identify electroplating units dumping toxic water into the sewerage instead of sending it to the common effluent treatment plant (CETP), thereby polluting the Buddha Dariya. They were instructed to complete the work within a week.
Officials concerned were directed to check misuse of water by 40 to 45 dyeing units in Tajpur area. PPCB officials said that of the 247 printing and washing units in the city, orders had been issued to close 150 for violating PPCB norms. Officials from the municipal corporation, drains, panchayat department, Glada, PPCB, and other departments were present in the meeting.
