Stenger's final graduation weekend at Binghamton University

VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Nearly 5,000 students are preparing to embark on the next stage of their lives as they graduate from Binghamton University this weekend. Graduation ceremonies began on Thursday in the Anderson Center and Events Center for all of the university's colleges, as well as a special ceremony for doctoral students. Nearly 25,000 family and friends are expected to travel to Greater Binghamton to attend the graduations, adding to the estimated $1.49 billion economic impact that BU has on our region. These ceremonies will be the last that outgoing President Harvey Stenger will preside over. He says Binghamton students are among the best and the brightest. 'You listen to their optimism and their desire to go out and do something. But they always come back and say, 'It's not about your title, it's not about your salary, it's about your impact,' said Stenger. Stenger once again plans to shake the hand of every graduate. He says he's had over 50,000 graduate handshakes in his 13 years as president. Each day features three ceremonies, with Saturday marking the largest, with Harpur College of Arts and Sciences divided into three sections. New BU statue allows students to high five a bearcat

VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – On Thursday, another statue was unveiled, this one on the main Vestal campus, of Binghamton University's mascot, a binturong, more commonly referred to as a Bearcat. The bronze statue perched on a granite pedestal was unveiled at its temporary location inside the lobby of the Admissions Building. Dubbed 'Bingturong,' the monument is the creation of President Harvey Stenger's Road Map interns, a group of students who met weekly with the president to assist with the university's strategic planning initiative. The students wanted to create an iconic symbol of the school for students to take pictures with. It was designed with its paw extended so people can give it a high five when passing by. First look: Harriet Tubman statue in downtown Binghamton Nora Monasheri graduated from BU last year with her MBA and returned to campus for the unveiling. She says the statue creates a great opportunity to make lasting memories. 'It really started with the belief from the administration, and the belief that the students can do it, having that power we really helped this come to fruition. We started with Road Map interns sitting around a table saying what can students bring with them as a start when they arrive here on campus as a freshman and continue to walk away with them,' said Monasheri. This is the 25th anniversary of the university adopting the Bearcat as its mascot. The statue will be placed at its permanent home near the school's clock tower along the campus's main central walkway known as 'The Spine' once construction in that area is completed at the end of this summer. BU seeking community input during president search

VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Binghamton University has officially launched the search for its next president and is looking to the community for support. BU announced on Thursday that it has begun the process to find current BU President Harvey Stenger's successor. Stenger announced in October 2024 that the Spring 2025 semester would be his last with the university. Stenge, who has served as president of BU for the past 13 years, says his decision to leave was due to wanting to spend more time with his family and explore other opportunities with them. BU says the search marks a significant moment in the University's history as it seeks a leader to build on Stenger's legacy and guide the institution into its next chapter of excellence. Binghamton previously credited Stenger with leading an era of growth and expansion that established the University's reputation as one of the top public institutions in the nation. The Binghamton University Presidential Search Committee, which consists of representatives from the University Council, faculty, students, alumni, the Binghamton University Foundation, and other key stakeholders, has been formed to oversee the process of selecting an individual or the position. BU will also be assisted by WittKieffer, a nationally recognized executive search firm, to assist in identifying and recruiting top candidates. Stenger delivers final State of the University speech Binghamton says it is committed to being inclusive and transparent during the hiring process, so it is adopting a representational approach, which strikes a balance between an open and a closed search. BU is inviting students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to provide input on the qualities they believe the next president should possess. BU encourages all stakeholders to participate in order to shape the leadership criteria that will define the selection process. Binghamton has established a website that will serve as a central hub where community members can learn about the search process and timeline, receive updates from the search committee, and submit feedback on the desired attributes and experience of the next University president. Click here to learn more. 'This is a defining moment for Binghamton University, and through an inclusive search process, the University is confident that it will attract an outstanding leader to continue its trajectory of excellence,' said Kate Madigan, chair of the Binghamton University Presidential Search Committee. 'Community input will play a crucial role in ensuring that the next president reflects the values and aspirations of the University.' The Presidential Search Committee is responsible for conducting a national search of candidates. The committee will then present a list of at least five highly qualified candidates to the Binghamton University Council. The Council will recommend three finalists to SUNY Chancellor John King, along with an assessment of their strengths and qualifications. The Chancellor will make a final recommendation to the SUNY Board of Trustees, which will approve the appointment of Binghamton University's next president. WATCH: Gov. Stenger delivers final State of the University speech

VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Amid confetti, on-stage selfies and a mock knighting ceremony, Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger gave what was likely his final State of the University speech at BU. Stenger, who announced in October that he is stepping down as President at the end of this school year. After taking a few selfies from the stage, Stenger gave an address highlighting what he calls the most successful year of his tenure. He says applications and enrollment are at a record level and that the pace of hiring new faculty and staff is even greater. And Stenger celebrated BU's recent ranking by Forbes magazine as one of the 10 best public universities in the country. Binghamton once again won the America East Cup, which honors a combination of athletic and academic achievement among the school's student athletes. Stenger says he's worked hard to leave the university in good shape for his successor. 'At my age, I'm not getting younger, I'm getting older, maybe I have time to do one more thing, one more meaningful thing in my life and I thought maybe this was a good time. I also kidded around telling people you want to leave when people want you to stay, not when people want you to leave. And I think we're at that point right now when everybody's excited about things,' said Stenger. Stenger twice fired off confetti cannons to celebrate the school's accomplishments. And he recognized Chemistry Professor and Nobel Laureate Stan Whittingham by pretending to knight him as his native England recently did this month. Stenger says a lot of construction projects remain underway both on the Vestal main campus and at the health sciences campus in Johnson City. BU will spend $575 million on construction projects over the next five years including a new 400 student dorm, 1,900 seats added to an expanded lecture hall and a complete renovation of the East Gym.
