Create Account Hassan Chokr, 37, of Dearborn, Mich., was out on bail when he allegedly drove through the parking lot of Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills, near Detroit, and unleashed a 'menacing antisemitic tirade' at parents dropping off their preschool-age kids in December 2022, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan said in a news release. Chokr allegedly yelled profanities and attacked parents' support for Israel before being asked to leave, the attorney's office said. Authorities said Chokr then attempted to buy three firearms at a nearby gun store, where he held a 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun, a rifle and a 9mm semi-automatic pistol while at times pointing them and pulling the trigger. But Chokr had been convicted in 2017 of felony theft and was facing a pending assault with a dangerous weapon charge, according to the New York Post . RECOMMENDED VIDEO While awaiting the results of a background check during the firearms purchase, Chokr allegedly said he was 'going to even the score' and use the weapons for 'God's wrath,' according to the attorney's office. Chokr was eventually denied the weapons after a background check uncovered his criminal history. 'The federal government must do everything in its power to stem the rising tide of antisemitism,' U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. said in a statement. 'Chokr's attempt to purchase several deadly firearms in an apparent (alleged) attempt to follow through on his menacing threats against parents and preschoolers as they walked into a place of worship represents every American's worst nightmare. And we will not allow anyone to terrorize our Jewish neighbours. 'We are committed to protecting every American and their right to live and worship free of fear.' Chokr pleaded guilty May 28 to being a felon in possession of a firearm. He is set to be sentenced on Sept. 24 and faces up to 15 years in prison. Federal gun case: Michigan man pleads guilty after anti-semitic threats against Jewish daycare

A Michigan man, Hassan Chokr, accused of planning an attack on a Jewish daycare and attempting to illegally purchase assault weapons after making threats, pleaded guilty to federal gun charges. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Chokr entered his plea on May 28 and now faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Hassan Chokr, 35, was out on bail when he drove through the parking lot of Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills, outside Detroit, and shouted antisemitic slurs and threats as parents dropped off their kids in December 2022, according to federal authorities. Chokr then drove to a gun store in his hometown of Dearborn and tried to purchase three semiautomatic weapons, a Del-Ton AR-15-style rifle, a Landor Arms automatic shotgun, and a Glock pistol. Chokr falsely said on the background check form that he had no prior felony convictions and no pending charges. However, he had a 2017 felony theft conviction and a pending charge for assault with a dangerous weapon. Because of this, the firearms transaction was blocked. While awaiting the background check, Chokr reportedly told store staff, 'It ain't a fair fight out here,' and said he was 'going to even the score' and 'even the playing field real soon brothers, real soon.' He also said he intended to use the weapons for 'God's wrath.' US attorney Jerome F Gorgon Jr said the attempted gun purchase appeared to be part of a broader plan to carry out threats against the Jewish community. 'We believe this was an effort to follow through on his menacing threats against parents and preschoolers as they walked into a place of worship,' he said. Prosecutors also pointed to disturbing online posts Chokr had made on Instagram. One message read: 'Your Jew tactics will only backfire on you, you have no place on this earth, Jew [expletive], Jew mother [expletives]. A storm is coming to wipe you all out of our lives.' After his arrest, Chokr made headlines again when he exposed himself in court by pulling down his pants in front of a judge.

Dearborn man accused of threatening kids, parents at Bloomfield Hills synagogue pleads guilty to gun crime

A Dearborn man who reportedly made antisemitic threats outside of an Oakland County synagogue has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing firearms, federal officials said. Hassan Chokr, 37, pleaded guilty Wednesday to being a felon in possession of a firearm after possessing multiple firearms inside a gun store. Chokr is accused of making racist and antisemitic threats to parents, children and security personnel at a parking lot at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills on the morning of Dec. 2, 2022. After being asked to leave the synagogue's property, officials say Chokr went to a gun store in Dearborn and attempted to purchase three firearms. While at the store, U.S. attorneys say Chokr held all three guns and "at times pointed it and pulled the trigger." Chokr, who is a convicted felon, is accused of lying about his eligibility to possess firearms. While waiting for the results of his background check, officials claim Chokr said he would "even the score" and use the guns for "God's wrath." The store denied Chokr's firearms purchase after the background check. Chokr was charged by Oakland County prosecutors with two counts of ethnic intimidation. "Chokr's attempt to purchase several deadly firearms in an apparent attempt to follow through on his menacing threats against parents and preschoolers as they walked into a place of worship represents every American's worst nightmare. And we will not allow anyone to terrorize our Jewish neighbors. We are committed to protecting every American and their right to live and worship free of fear," said U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. in a statement. Chokr will be sentenced on Sept. 24. He faces up to 15 years in prison.
