Brunei ruler discharged from hospital, resting in Malaysia
[KUALA LUMPUR] Brunei's ruler, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, has been discharged from a Malaysian hospital and will rest for several days in Malaysia, the Brunei Prime Minister's Office said late on Saturday (May 31). The sultan, 78, has returned to the Grand Hyatt Hotel to rest following advice from medical experts before returning to Brunei, it said in a statement. He was admitted to the National Heart Institute for fatigue during a meeting of South-east Asian leaders last week in Kuala Lumpur. It is not known when the ruler will return to Brunei. The queen and other members of the royal family were with him, the statement said. The sultan holds multiple roles in the small South-east Asian nation, serving as Brunei's prime minister, armed forces commander, finance minister, foreign minister and defence minister. REUTERS

Brunei's information department posted pictures on Facebook of the sultan walking into the hotel lobby with his wife, and in a room with family members including his wife and two of his sons. Sultan Hassanal was attending an annual summit o f the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Kuala Lumpur when he was hospitalized Tuesday at the National Heart Institute. Sultan Hassanal has ruled his tiny oil-rich kingdom for over 57 years, and led it to gain full independence from Britain in 1984. He is famed for his lavish lifestyle, owning a huge collection of expensive and rare cars, and lives in a 1,788-room palace that is the world's largest private home. He is also known for introducing strict Islamic criminal laws that call for amputating limbs and stoning convicts to death.

Brunei PMO: Sultan of Brunei discharged from IJN, currently resting in KL
THE Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, was discharged from the National Heart Institute (IJN) yesterday after receiving treatment since Tuesday (May 27). In an Instagram post, the Brunei Prime Minister's Office informed that His Majesty is currently staying at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur. 'Medical specialists have advised His Majesty to continue resting for a few more days before returning to Brunei Darussalam,' the post read. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah arrived in Malaysia on May 25 to attend the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) on May 26 and 27. His Majesty was reported to have been resting at IJN since May 27 due to fatigue. — BERNAMA
