Is Topeka getting a Hawaiian Bros? What we know

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Hawaiian-style food options are somewhat limited in the Capital City, but a national restaurant chain may change things. 27 News reached out to the Hawaiian Bros Island Grill company this week to find out if it has any plans to set up shop in the Topeka area. The company currently has several locations in Kansas such as in Wichita, Lawrence and a recently opened spot in Manhattan. A company spokeswoman responded saying that Topeka won't be receiving a Hawaiian Bros of its own. However, she didn't rule out the possibility that Topeka will receive one in the near future. 'We do not currently have plans to put a restaurant there. However, we are a young and growing company and have just signed several franchises recently.' Hawaiian Bros spokeswoman Hawaiian Bros' menu features its classic 'Plate Lunch' which comes with a variety of combination options you can pick and choose from that typically include white rice and/or macaroni salad. Customers can add chicken, pork and spam to their dishes and finish things off with a dole soft serve. Former Wolfe's Camera shop, nearby buildings for sale for $2.85 million Topeka is currently due to receive several new restaurants in the days ahead such as a new CAVA, Whataburger and Raising Cane's. Hawaiian Bros Island Grill opens Waukee restaurant

Hawaiian Bros Island Grill is bringing fast-casual Hawaiian fare to the metro. Driving the news: The new Waukee restaurant opened Monday along SE Alice's Road. BraveHart Development opened the franchise and also owns several Scooters Coffees and hotels around the state. State of play: The Kansas City-based chain focuses on "plate lunch" — a Hawaiian-style meal with rice, macaroni salad and a protein, co-owner David Pedelty tells Axios. Details: The fast-casual restaurant seats 68 people and has a drive-thru and patio. Customers can also order from the counter or a kiosk inside with staff delivering meals to tables. Plates cost around $11.95. The menu: Dishes include huli huli chicken — a marinated, teriyaki chicken; luau pig — a slow-roasted, seasoned pork dish; and Spam musubi — grilled spam with rice, wrapped in seaweed. Other options include salads, wraps, dole whip for dessert and "Hawaiian Sun" juice drinks. What they're saying: "We wanted to diversify, but we didn't want to do the same old," Pedelty says on the decision to open a franchise. "We love the fact that Hawaiian Bros was real food, no freezers, no fryers, no microwaves." What's next: Pedelty says they want to own 10 Iowa locations, with half of them in the metro. The group's first location is in Davenport. If you go: 11am-10pm, Sunday-Thursday; 11am-11pm, Friday-Saturday 1005 SE Alice's Road, Waukee
