Albert Lea man injured in truck-train collision near Oakland
May 7—A 25-year-old Albert Lea man was taken by private vehicle to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea Tuesday morning after the truck he was driving was reportedly struck by a train two miles west of Oakland. Lukas Peterson was driving a 2006 International tractor-truck owned by Hayward Cooperative north on 870th Avenue approaching the railroad tracks north of Freeborn County Road 46 when the incoming Canadian Pacific train reportedly sounded its horn. According to the Freeborn County Sheriff's Office, Peterson slowed down but did not stop for the tracks and started to cross. The truck was ultimately hit by the train on the passenger side front engine area and was thrown into the ditch. The train was traveling about 40 mph at the time of the crash, the Sheriff's Office stated. The truck was totaled. The Minnesota duty officer was contacted due to a spill of dry fertilizer, diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid from the truck.
