WCFR contain camper fire on Oak Grove Rd., Darlington

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Walton County Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire on Oak Grove Road in Darlington on Friday night. According to fire officials, just after 7:30 p.m., firefighters arrived to find a camper engulfed in flames. WCFR crews were able to quickly knock down the flames. Walton County hosting Hazmat Collection Day Fortunately, no one was inside at the time, officials wrote in a Facebook post. The State Fire Marshal has been notified and will be investigating the cause of the fire. Crews remain on the scene. Expect heavy smoke and use caution if you're in the area. New bill aims to end privatization of local beaches

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The fight against the privatization of beaches is gaining momentum. Friday morning, Florida State Sen. Jay Trumbull filed legislation that would bring back the customary use of the beach. The customary use ordinance previously allowed people to enjoy all beaches, even private ones. Walton County hosting Hazmat Collection Day A state law adopted in 2018 prevented local governments from adopting ordinances that established customary use. But it grandfathered in ordinances that were established before 2016. Many, including Trumbull, argue the exemption singled out Walton County proposed Senate Bill 1622 would repeal the law. Trumbull recognized Walton County residents for their ongoing advocacy against the privatization of the beaches. In Friday's news release, he said, 'Residents should not be denied access to our beaches and no one individual should have the power to deny the public from enjoying a community asset that means so much to so many.' Florida PSC reviews potential electricity rate hike proposal

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Most of you can expect another rate increase for electricity. Florida Power & Light Company submitted a new rate schedule to the Florida Public Service Commission on Friday. FP&L's current rate agreement is set to expire at the end of this year. This new proposed schedule would cover the 4-year period from January 2026 through December 2029. If the public service commission approves the proposal, here's how it will affect your bill. Right now, the average bill for a customer that uses 1,000 kilowatt hours per month is Panhandle $143.60. Walton County hosting Hazmat Collection Day In 2026, that rate would go to $147.10 In 2027, the price would jump to $148.29. It will go up by almost $2 in 2028 and more than $3 a month in 2029. Former Gulf Power customers in the Panhandle have been paying more than the rest of the state. That would continue in 2026, but in 2027, all customers would begin paying the same rates. Friday's filing begins an extensive public review process. The public service commission will schedule hearings and provide other opportunities for customer input before making any decisions.
