Qatar makes a $1 billion bet on quantum computing

Qatar plans to pour $1 billion over the next decade into quantum computing, one of the biggest government sponsorships of the technology. A joint venture between US quantum computing company Quantinuum and privately held Qatari investment firm Al Rabban Capital is spearheading the effort to boost adoption in Qatar and the Gulf. The government's investment will go toward building an ecosystem that includes infrastructure and funding for research, development, and training. The Quantinuum venture will provide the technology and offer services to academic institutions and industrial partners, Quantinuum's CEO Rajeeb Hazra told Semafor. Quantum computers — which have had some recent breakthroughs but aren't commercially deployed yet — rely on the physical properties of atoms to create exponentially more powerful software than those that rely on ones and zeroes. They have the potential to make breakthroughs in materials science, energy, health care, and financial modeling, Hazra said. Qatar's $1 billion pledge surpasses all other government investments in the field, Hazra said. The initiative has been more than a year in the works and aligns with US President Donald Trump's approach to the Gulf, emphasizing deep collaboration in technology. Unlike artificial intelligence, quantum computing doesn't require massive amounts of power, but it does need large data sets and AI capabilities to make advancements — making the Gulf a logical place to expand the technology, he said. The venture with Al Rabban Capital — the investment arm of a Qatari family that made its wealth in bottled water and construction — will focus on providing hardware, codeveloping industry-specific applications, and running education programs. Al Rabban has been investing in tech companies and is committed to helping Qatar diversify its economy, Hazra said. The venture is focused on creating commercially viable applications and building an industry that young Qataris would want to pursue as a career. 'It's no good just having a computer,' he said. 'What are you doing with it?'

Cancer ‘winners' turn guides for new patients

Kolkata: When college teacher Kamalika Hazra was detected with breast cancer, she did not waste a single day in planning her treatment. Now a cancer winner, she is ready to take on the role of a guide to new cancer patients as part of a project called ' Jiboner Sathi ', a cancer patient navigator programme. Launched on Friday, individuals like Hazra have been enlisted to be friends, guides, and morale boosters to new cancer patients. An initiative of the Institute of Breast Disease, Kolkata, a team of cancer doctors, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, and cancer surgeons, who are part of the Cancer Care and Cure Society of Bengal, have enlisted 22 cancer winners for the project. As a cancer winner, it is my responsibility to lend help to new patients," said Gayatri Chatterjee, another survivor. Doctors said that due to misconceptions and financial strain, many patients drop out of treatment. "The idea is to build a trust factor with new patients when they hear it from the survivors themselves, giving them confidence in the treatment protocol," said cancer surgeon Soumen Das. At present, Bengal registers about 2 lakh new cancer patients each year. "Many cancer patients fall into depression, and our goal is to ensure that they have people to boost their morale during the process," said medical oncologist Tanmoy Mondal. Senior surgical oncologist Gautam Mukhopadhyay said the organisation will also provide guidance to patients who are facing financial crises for treatment completion.

Bengal school job case: Sujay Bhadra got Rs 75 crore from middleman, CBI informs court

Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Tuesday, informed a special court in Kolkata that one of the prime accused in the West Bengal school job case, Sujay Krishna Bhadra, received Rs 75 crore from one particular middleman, Arun Hazra. The money received by Bhadra, according to the CBI counsel, was collected by Hazra from 'tainted" candidates who paid to secure school jobs. Hazra, who is named as an accused in the charge sheet, appeared at the special court in the afternoon. The judge enquired about the actual charges against him. Thereafter, the CBI counsel briefed the court on the amount of money that Hazra collected as a middleman from "tainted" candidates and handed over the money, amounting to Rs 75 crore, to Bhadra. The CBI counsel also presented a summary of Hazra's modus operandi to the court. As per the CBI, Hazra, as a middleman, used to operate a chain of sub-agents. Their main task was to identify candidates willing to pay money for school jobs and, accordingly, collect the money from these candidates. Hazra collected amounts for the recruitment in all categories of teaching staff, namely primary, secondary, and higher secondary. While the recruitment for primary teachers is done by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE), the same is done for secondary and higher secondary teachers by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC). Last month, CBI collected the handwriting specimens of Hazra to match them with the texts in some diaries, recovered by the investigating officials, which contain some details of the payments made by Hazra to Bhadra. Similarly, handwriting specimens of six of Hazra's sub-agents were also collected. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court's division bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar had upheld an earlier order by a division bench of the Calcutta High Court cancelling 25,753 teaching (secondary and higher secondary) and non-teaching jobs in state-run schools. The Supreme Court also accepted the observation of the Calcutta High Court that the entire panel had to be cancelled because of the failure of the state government and the commission to segregate the 'genuine' candidates from the 'tainted" ones. Meanwhile, a detailed hearing in the case on irregularities in the recruitment of primary teachers in different state-run schools will resume at the Calcutta High Court's new bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Reetobrata Kumar Mitra from May 7. The fate of around 32,000 primary teachers is at stake in the case
