Teen boy injured by bombings in Gaza receives prosthetic leg through Metro Detroit nonprofit

One of those children is Mohammad Eid. He's like any other 14-year-old who doesn't like getting up early in the morning and loves to eat. "He's feisty, he's fun, he's bubbly. He's exactly what you'd expect from a teenager," said Abdullah Mrech, his physical therapist. "He will throw a fit sometimes, but he's very sweet. He will come back and apologize," said his host mom, Wisal Samaha. It's been a long journey to get here. From surviving the bombing that killed both his parents and a sibling to his arrival in Detroit after a 10-hour flight from Paris. He was fitted for his new prosthetic leg and was walking with it for the first time. MaxPro Rehabilitation and other medical professionals work together to provide the necessary care for the children affected by the ongoing crisis in Gaza for free. "He was dreaming for that day," Samaha said. Walking on the treadmill or climbing up steps is still exhausting at this stage, but the goal is to get back to his favorite sports. "There was one day where I had him kick a ball so he could practice something that was fun for him. He was smiling the whole time. He really loved it," Mrech said. When he returns home in a few weeks, it will be hard on Smaha, but they will always be in each other's lives. "He calls me 'Mama' sometimes, and I love that," Samaha said. "I told him, 'I'm coming to your wedding. You're not marrying without me.'" Mohammad says he's grateful for this opportunity, and he has a message to America. "All the kids in Gaza, they're normal kids. They want to play and live, have a future like any other kids in the world," he said, translated by Samaha.

4 kids injured by bombings in Gaza receiving care in Metro Detroit

Four Palestinian children from Gaza arrived at Detroit Metro Airport on Sunday afternoon. The kids are here to get medical care, including new prosthetic limbs. A massive crowd of people eagerly waited in front of the international flight terminal exit for their arrival. Among the welcome party was Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud. "This is the welcoming nature of our community, and we welcome all, and we're so thrilled and excited to be welcomed at home these heroes today," Hammoud said. All this is possible thanks to the nonprofit organization Heal Palestine. "We find children who need surgical services that we can provide through community hospitals across the country," Dr. Zeena Salman, cofounder of Heal Palestine, said, "as well as communities that will host and care for these kids and their families in a healing and loving way." After a long wait, the children finally make their way through the sliding glass doors. The first one out — the only girl among the group — 11-year-old Lana. The youngest, 7-year-old Saher, smiled shyly at the crowd, and 14-year-old Mohammad, an orphan who lost both parents, bravely waved. "They have been through so much. They have seen more than we'll ever be able to even comprehend. The bombings, the loss of their own limbs," Dr. Salman said. Twelve-year-old Waheed, who lost the lower half of an arm, a leg and an eye, was last of the four off the plane. "He doesn't know anything about America except that he's going to get a new leg," Dr. Salman said. Through a translator, he said he's happy to be here. "He wants to walk again like before. He wants to be able to play soccer with his friends like he used to," Dr. Salman said. His mother was overwhelmed by the reception. "She's full of hope because she wants the people here to help her son walk again," Dr. Salman said.

Boy from Gaza injured in Israeli airstrike receives prosthetic leg in Chicago

An 8-year-old boy from Gaza who was seriously injured in an airstrike last year is able to walk again, after receiving a prosthetic leg at a hospital in Chicago. Baraa was evacuated from Gaza last year, after he lost his right foot and suffered major injuries to his left arm and left leg in an Israeli airstrike. He also lost his father and grandmother when their house was bombed by the Israeli military in Rafah. The nonprofit Heal Palestine organization brought Baraa, his 3-year-old sister, and his mother to Chicago in July. Now, thanks to doctors at Shriners Children's Chicago, he's taking his first steps with a prosthetic leg. Heal Palestine shared video on Instagram showing Baraa learning to walk again. Heal Chicago said he still faces a lengthy recovery from his injuries.
