Black Maternal Health Walk-a-thon returns to Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — News 8 invited members of the Healthy Baby Network to the News 8 at Sunrise studio to preview the 2nd annual Black Maternal Health Walk-a-thon. Organizers share with News 8's Mikhaela Singleton the importance of raising awareness for Black maternal health and the ongoing racial disparities in healthcare. According to the Healthy Baby Network, the maternal mortality rate in the Finger Lakes region is 60 percent higher than the New York State average and Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than their Caucasian counterparts. The upcoming walk-a-thon will serve as an opportunity to bring Rochester area residents closer to equitable and accessible healthcare. Vendors offering information and services will include Monroe County Health Services, Eastman Dental, Common Ground Health, Foodlink, and many more. The event will be April 12 at Marketplace Mall at 9:30 am. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
