15th annual Shimmy Mob gives back to Latimer House
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) – On Saturday, the 15th annual Shimmy Mob will be contribute to Latimer House as a way to support victims of domestic violence.
Shimmy Mob is a world wide belly dance event that happens on the second Saturday of May and there is a group located here in the Grand Valley.
Sharon Anable, leader of the local Shimmy Mob group in Grand Junction, lost her daughter, Heather Anable in 2017 to domestic abuse when she was shot and killed by her boyfriend at the age of 31.
And WesternSlopeNow was able to sit down with Anable to explain why it is important to come out and support.
Anable states, 'It is an event to raise awareness of intimate partner and domestic violence, as well as raise money for local shelters. so teams are created in cities around the world, and they pick a local charity here in Grand Junction, it is Latimer House. This is the 14th year Grand Junction has been involved Shimmy Mob has been around for 15 years, so we feel very blessed to have been a part of it almost since the get-go.'
Anable tells WesternSlopeNow her daughter was murdered on Mother's Day and on the night she was partaking in the Shimmy Mob event.
After experiencing those courses of events, Anable became heavily involved with giving back to the Latimer House. As she explains,
'I felt it was important to get back into it, tell my daughter's story, and just show the community that this happens right here, and that we need to support Latimer House, because they provide a very valuable service to women and men to leave unsafe situations, so the work they do literally can save lives.'
