How Derek Carr spent his first day of retirement after shock decision to quit the NFL and pass on $30m deal
Derek Carr won't be relaxing in retirement if the first day of his post-NFL life is anything to go by. The former Raiders and Saints quarterback shocked fans on Saturday by revealing that he would hang up his cleats rather than face an arduous return from shoulder injury. A few hours after the announcement, Carr's wife Heather posted a video on social media detailing the 34-year-old's 'first day of retirement'. 'What are you going to do?' she asked the quarterback, who announced: 'We're going to go outside and run as a family.' The video then showed a topless Carr sprinting across his back yard, trailed by the family's four children - Dallas, Deker, Deakon and Brooklyn. The 34-year-old then headed to strengthen his legs in the gym, where his kids were also seen working out by playing basketball. Derek Carr enjoyed an action-packed day after announcing his retirement from the NFL Carr later enjoyed a date with his wife, who bought him lunch, before he picked up his clubs and headed out to play golf. 'I'm going to make the tour,' the former quarterback joked as he loaded his bag into his truck. Carr is believed to have a handicap of around six. After playing golf, Carr was back out in the yard with his kids, where he put them through baseball drills. They later enjoyed a family dinner before Carr headed out to flower the plants. 'Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I've decided to retire from the National Football League,' Carr said in his statement. 'For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. 'It's difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.' Carr began throwing again in March after his 2024 season ended December 8 due to a concussion and a left-hand injury. The 34-year-old soon began experiencing discomfort in his throwing shoulder and subsequent medical scans revealed 'significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff,' according to the Saints. Although surgery was an option, it would put his entire 2025 season in jeopardy and still couldn't ensure a return to full strength. So, after discussing with his wife, Heather, as well as the team and outside medical personnel, Carr decided to end his NFL career. His sudden retirement comes after his recent revelation that Heather recently suffered a miscarriage. The former Fresno State star said they had been scheduled to travel to New Orleans to get a diagnosis on his shoulder injury when he had to rush his wife to the hospital. Carr, who has been married to Heather since 2012, revealed that neither he nor his wife were aware they were expecting until the medics informed them that the miscarriage was behind her illness.

Fresno State alumnus Derek Carr ends NFL career due to shoulder issues. ‘Forever grateful'
Former Fresno State star quarterback Derek Carr has retired from the NFL after 11 seasons, where most of his career was spent with the Raiders. Shoulder issues flared up for Carr and surgery was discussed, but it would have put him in the six-month window before he can rehab. 'Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I've decided to retire from the National Football League,' Carr wrote on social media. 'For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. It's difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.' Carr opted to retire with help from wife, Heather Carr. The New Orleans Saints explained what led to Carr's sudden retirement. 'In late March, while ramping up his preparation for the 2025 season, Derek experienced pain in his right shoulder. It was his first time throwing a football at significant volume since recovering from both a concussion and left hand injury sustained during play on December 8, 2024. Derek immediately contacted the Saints Medical Team. Eventually, medical scans determined objectively that Derek sustained a labral tear and also had significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff. Since that time, Derek, his representation, the Saints Medical Team and outside medical experts have worked together to determine the best path forward. Surgery was an option, jeopardizing the entire 2025 season, yet there was no guarantee Derek would return to the level of strength, function and performance of play to which he was accustomed,' the organization wrote on social media. Carr, 34, played four seasons at Fresno State and set 27 school records and 21 Mountain West Conference records. His stardom at Fresno State led to him being selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the then-Oakland Raiders. With the Raiders, he established several records, including passing yards and touchdowns. He led the Raiders to the 2016 NFL playoffs as a wild-card team, but an unfortunate leg injury against the Indianapolis Colts in Oakland forced him to miss the rest of the season after a 12-3 start under former coach Jack Del Rio, including the playoffs game against the Houston Texans. Carr got the Raiders back to the playoffs during the 2021 season after a win over the Los Angeles Chargers under interim coach Rich Bisaccia. Carr last played for the Raiders during the 2022 season. He joined the Saints in 2023 before calling it quits on Saturday. Now, Carr will continue life with his family, likely residing in Fresno where he announced in the spring that the family is moving back to the area. 'I'm excited for our kids to have a place they can call home,' Carr said then. 'We've moved a lot, and they've been asking me where we're gonna grow up forever. We always told them Fresno. We finally get to do that. The kids are excited to do that. I'm excited for those things.' Overall, Carr passed for 41,245 yards and 257 touchdowns.

Derek Carr announces his retirement
Derek Carr's NFL career has come to an end. Carr and the Saints announced on Saturday morning that he is retiring as a result of a right shoulder injury. 'Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I've decided to retire from the National Football League,' said Carr. 'For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. It's difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.' Advertisement Carr said he first felt pain in his right shoulder in March when he began throwing a football for the first time since his season ended with a concussion and a left hand injury in December. He informed the Saints' medical staff of the pain and they diagnosed him with a labral tear and degenerative changes to his rotator cuff. After additional testing and consideration of surgery and other options, Carr decided the best option was to stop playing. It's unclear what type of contractual agreement Carr and the Saints have come to. Carr was slated to cost more than $20 million against the Saints' salary cap this year and a whopping $69 million against the cap next year. Carr's retirement leaves the Saints with three quarterbacks on their roster: 2025 second-round pick Tyler Shough, 2024 fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler, and 2023 fourth-round pick Jake Haener.

Saints Star Derek Carr Retires From NFL, But Business Ventures Await
Quarterback Derek Carr is retiring. Following an injury to his throwing shoulder, his future with the New Orleans Saints hung in the balance for much of the spring. 'It's taken a few weeks because it's not an easy answer,' the quarterback exclusively shared in early May. 'We're both trying to find a solution that's best for me and best for the team when it comes to the rehab, or is it surgery? It's a tricky, touchy thing because you can get a lot of opinions.' The four-time Pro Bowler and younger brother of David Carr — the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 NFL Draft — Derek Carr spent nine years with the Raiders organization before signing a four-year, $150 million contract, including $100 million guaranteed, with the Saints in 2023. He's gone 14-13 with the Saints while completing 68.2% of his passes for 6,023 yards, 40 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Of course, he's most associated with the Raiders for whom he is the franchise's all-time leader in completions (3,201), passing touchdowns (217) and passing yards (35,222). Now that the 34-year-old quarterback has retired, a plethora of business opportunities await. Derek's latest business venture came about organically. Derek's wife, Heather, bought pints of chocolate and mint chip Frönen, a frozen, ice cream-like dessert free of gluten, dairy, soy and seed oil and gums, from Sprouts Farmers Market. Derek typically avoids dessert, but his family got him to try it. 'We ended up loving it,' Derek said. Healthy food is very important to David's wife, Melody, because David and three of their five kids have Type 1 diabetes. So, Heather sent some to her sister-in-law, Melody. 'This is all our wives' doing,' Derek said. 'They're the brains behind the operation.' Heather reached out to the frozen dessert company via Instagram, and a partnership between the Carrs and Frönen quickly came together in April. 'We all just clicked,' said Frönen president Brian McDermott. The Carrs are not only ambassadors for the product, but David and Derek are also are two of the more significant investors in the company. 'It's a meaningful stake,' said Frönen CEO George Ho. Frönen was founded at the University of Chicago in 2018. Jessica Gartenstein, who suffers from celiac disease, longed to be able to enjoy dessert. Her partner, Erik Nadeau, introduced Gartenstein to his grandmother's fruit-based recipes. The pints now come in 10 flavors, ranging from madagascar vanilla to peanut butter chip. Frönen, which is German for 'indulge,' has doubled its store count in the last year and is now available at 1,700 grocers, including Sprouts, Natural Grocers, Wegmans, Raley's and Whole Foods. More could be on the way. 'This partnership with the Carrs is going to take Frönen to yet another level,' Ho said. Frönen isn't the only business on which the two brothers work together. David and Derek are co-spokesmen for a couple of businesses in the Central Valley of California: Educational Employees Credit Union (EECU) and Valley Children's Healthcare. And they are creative collaborators with Moonracer Films, a Sacramento, Calif. 'What's been fun about that is that we've been able to do it together,' David said. 'We can bounce ideas off each other.' In addition to his work with Derek, David is individually involved with several of his own companies. He's a spokesman for Table Mountain Casino, Bonadelle Neighborhoods home builder, The Iron Office Gym, The Good Feet Store and Motor City car dealerships. An NFL Network analyst since 2016, he also appears in regular segments on iHeart radio segment and ABC30 News in Fresno. 'We only partner with people we believe in,' Derek said. Just like Derek followed his enjoyment of Frönen, he chose a product he loved while investing in OOFOS. After breaking his fibula in Week 16 of the 2016 NFL season, he started wearing OOFOS footwear, whose sports slides, sandals and close-toed shoes are designed for post-sports recovery because of its foam technology. 'Immediately, my discomfort went from like a 10 out of 10 to a one out of 10,' Derek said. 'I was like, 'this insane.'' Former NFL quarterback Alex Smith, whose broken right leg required 17 surgeries, is also an investor in OOFOS. Smith, the 2020 Comeback Player of the Year, retired in April of 2021. Months later he became an NFL analyst on ESPN. Business and media could similarly mark Carr's post-quarterback future too, but he said his priority will be coaching his children and working in the ministry. 'I find myself wearing a lot of different hats and getting excited about a lot of different things,' Derek said. 'I'm a faithful man first.'
