Heerenveen and Jahanbakhsh struggle to strike a new deal
Alireza Jahanbakhsh (31) has likely played his last match for SC Heerenveen. The attacker has been injured and will be sidelined for weeks, and thus until the end of the season. This comes via head coach Robin Veldman on Omroep Abe, a podcast of the Leeuwarder Courant. It is unclear what Jahanbakhsh is suffering from; as Veldman only said that the attacker is no longer being counted on for this season. With the Iranian has an expiring contract, the collaboration with Heerenveen looks to be ending quietly. Advertisement The 92-time international wants to look for an adventure outside the Netherlands for next season. He was already looking for that last year, but because Jahanbakhsh was busy obtaining his Dutch passport, he decided to stay in the Eredivisie longer. Jahanbakhsh was added to the Heerenveen selection in early November. Before that, he had been without a club for a few months, following his departure from Feyenoord. The right winger played 19 league matches for the Frisians, 16 of which as a starter. He lost his place in the team last month to Jacob Trenskow, who had returned from an injury; against NEC, Jahanbakhsh did not leave the bench. The veteran scored three times for Heerenveen. Heerenveen are currently eighth in the Eredivisie and will play against RKC Waalwijk (away), Go Ahead Eagles (away) and Feyenoord (home) this season. After that, Veldman's team hopes to qualify for the European play-offs. GBeNeFN | Max Bradfield

De Kuip politics: radio silence from Van Bronckhorst after Technical Director talks held with Feyenoord
According to VoetbalPrimeur this morning, Chris Woerts made a remarkable claim on Vandaag Inside. The sports reporter explained that Feyenoord spoke to their former Eredivisie and KNVB Cup-winning manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst about a potential technical director role. Talks reportedly stalled, leaving journalists to question an internal power imbalance in the south of Rotterdam. 'Dennis te Kloese is the technical and general director at Feyenoord,' Woerts begins. 'There is a large movement within the club that says that these functions should be separated. Dennis general director and a new technical director. One of the candidates: Giovanni van Bronckhorst. He has a Feyenoord past and is a neat, representative guy. He also speaks his languages. They had one conversation and after that he never heard anything again. Nothing more.' Johan Derksen thinks he knows what's going on. 'I strongly suspect that Te Kloese wants to keep all the power to himself.' Valentijn Driessen sees only one solution for Feyenoord. 'You can't have both. You have to separate them.' Woerts explains why that hasn't happened yet. 'Dennis is actually more of a technical director than a general manager. He does play general manager, but his heart lies with technique. He never wants to give that up.' 'They have a supervisory board that supervises that, don't they? Dennis is not the boss of Feyenoord,' Derksen chimes in again. 'That's right,' Woerts responds. 'I think Gio is an excellent candidate to be technical director at Feyenoord. When he calls, they all answer the phone.' Derksen agrees by saying that Van Bronckhorst is really someone coming up in his own right. 'Nobody is coming in with Dennis,' the journalist says. 'Dennis has, of course, failed miserably by letting Robin van Persie leave for Heerenveen, to then get that dead Dane, that didn't work out, to then declare Van Persie suitable. Then you are worthless as a Technical Director.' Woerts agrees. 'Priske was the biggest blunder at Feyenoord ever. They scouted him for nine months, and it turned out he couldn't do anything.' Ismael Saibari Catapults PSV to Victory
Morocco's Ismael Saibari contributed to PSV Eindhoven's 2-1 narrow win over Heerenveen in the Eredivisie at the Philips Stadion on Saturday. The 24-year-old Atlas Lion broke the deadlock just minutes before halftime, smashing in a perfect pass from Guus Til. Saibari is in a sizzling form and proving to be one of PSV's most consistent players – with 7 goals and 9 assists in just 21 league matches. The Moroccan midfielder is tipped to join the national squad for the next World Cup qualifiers against Niger and Tanzania on March 21 and 25. Saibari has climbed the ranks of PSV Eindhoven youth team into the senior squad and has become a starting player under manager Peter Bosz. He regularly plays as a creative box-to-box player alongside Jerdy Schouten and Til. Last Tuesday, PSV were pummelled 7-1 at home against Arsenal in the Champions League's last-16 tie. Saibari started the game on the right side of a three-man midfield and was rated a disappointing 4.7, according to FotMob. The second leg will be played next Wednesday at the Emirates Stadium in London, and Saibari's chances to qualify to the next round are unfortunately almost null. USMNT defender Sergiño Dest makes return from ACL injury with PSV
US men's national team defender Sergiño Dest has returned from knee surgery after more than 10 months out of action. The 24-year-old entered in the 67th minute for PSV Eindhoven against Heerenveen in the Eredivisie on Saturday, coming on in place of fellow American Richy Ledesma. 'Of course I have to take it easy and be careful, but it felt good,' Dest told the club website afterward. Dest's return could be especially well-timed for the US national team, which will announce its squad for the upcoming Nations League finals on Tuesday. The two-game tournament will be the last major competition that will involve all of the team's first-choice players until the 2026 World Cup. The US is set to play Panama in the semi-final on 20 March, with Mexico and Canada playing in the other semi-final that same day. The final and third place game will be on 23 March. Sign up to Soccer with Jonathan Wilson Jonathan Wilson brings expert analysis on the biggest stories from European soccer after newsletter promotion If Dest is named to the US squad and plays in the Nations League finals, it will mark almost exactly a year since his last international appearance, which came in the 2024 Nations League final victory over Mexico. His ACL injury meant that Dest missed the 2024 Copa América in which the US was eliminated in the group stage, which resulted in the dismissal of head coach Gregg Berhalter. A call-up would represent Dest's first time in camp with Berhalter's replacement, Mauricio Pochettino. Dest was loaned from Barcelona to PSV in August 2023 and agreed to a four-year contract with PSV last June. The outside back scored two goals in 25 league matches and 37 overall games before tearing an ACL in training on 20 April, an injury that needed surgery. He has two goals in 33 international appearances and started all four US matches at the 2022 World Cup. PSV beat Heerenveen 2-1 and is now second in the Dutch top tier behind leader Ajax.
