Ward 64 councillor assault trial set for June

A TRIAL date of June 11 and 12 at the Durban Magistrate's Court has been set for an assault case involving Ward 64 councillor Gavin Hegter. Hegter appeared in court today (May 15) for a pre-trial conference. To read other stories on this case click here. Hegter is facing an assault charge after he allegedly assaulted Mncedisi Dlamini (43) in Yellowwood Park in November last year. Hegter is accused of hitting Dlamini with a torch on the mouth following an alleged argument between the two. Also read: Update: Gavin Hegter's assault case to resume in March Mncedisi is the brother of Alfred Dlamini, a security guard who was assigned to patrol an abandoned State-owned house in Hoopoe Lane in Yellowwood Park. According to an affidavit submitted to the DA by Hegter, he said on the night of November 15 a group of people were having a party in Hoopoe Lane. In the affidavit, Hegter said he called a member of the Crime Prevention unit from the Montclair Police Station to investigate what was happening at the building. Hegter's lawyer Zama Xaba told the court that the defence plans to call two witnesses when the trial resumes in June, while the prosecution will also present two witnesses. The case has sparked public interest with the ANC and uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) calling for justice to be served. Outside court, supporters of the MK Party showed support to the victim.
