‘Lawlessness': Hundreds of juveniles cause chaos in Mayfield Heights after church festival
MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) — A large group of juveniles caused a public disturbance Saturday night in Mayfield Heights after being turned away from a packed church festival in neighboring Gates Mills, police said. Advertisement According to the Mayfield Heights Police Department, the incident began at about 7 p.m. when the Saint Francis of Assisi Family Festival reached capacity and organizers requested assistance with hundreds of teens still trying to enter. Two identified after shooting at Summit Co. home Multiple fights broke out between 8 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., police said. Officers pursued two males who were suspected to be armed. One suspect was apprehended and is facing criminal charges. According to police, the festival was shut down 30 minutes early as tensions escalated. An estimated 300 to 400 youths then crossed into Mayfield Heights, where residents soon began reporting trespassing and disturbances, police said. Advertisement Police said the group gathered near Eastgate Plaza, where they vandalized businesses and stole items. Officers from multiple jurisdictions, including Lyndhurst, Highland Heights, Mayfield Village and the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office, joined Mayfield Heights police in responding to the chaos. About a dozen businesses were advised to temporarily lock their doors. In one case, officers deployed pepper balls to break up a confrontation involving physical violence. 'It took 35 to 40 officers nearly three hours to bring the situation under control,' Mayfield Heights Police Chief Anthony Mele is quoted in a press release. City leaders and church organizers plan to meet in the coming weeks to review the events and discuss changes for future festivals. Pedestrian struck, killed in Fairview Heights overnight near vehicle fire
FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. – A driver fatally struck a pedestrian overnight in Fairview Heights near the scene of a vehicle fire, police say. The collision and the unrelated vehicle fire happened around midnight Friday near the area of St. Clair Avenue and Third Avenue. According to the Fairview Heights Police Department, officers initially responded to a vehicle fire in the area that appeared to have stemmed from a mechanical issue. While officers assisted with the vehicle fire, they heard a collision just west of the scene. Musk says Trump is named in Epstein files Officers immediately responded and learned that a driver struck a pedestrian just moments before. First responders attempted some life-saving measures while requesting an ambulance. The pedestrian was rushed to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased from his injuries. Fairview Heights police say the driver that struck the victim immediately pulled over and was cooperative with the investigation. Police say, based on preliminary findings, witness statements and officer observations, it is possible the victim had come to the scene of the vehicle fire to assist a family member who was involved. Subscribe Now Investigators say the victim parked his vehicle on the north side of St. Clair Avenue and walked into St. Clair Avenue southbound towards the Metrolink Station just before he was struck. Police have not yet disclosed the victim's name or age. Authorities are currently working to notify next of kin. Man arrested for burglary after stolen car was found behind a building
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — One man is in jail Tuesday after being arrested by Peoria police for allegedly breaking into a building after he stolen a van. Bryson R. Lathum, 29, was booked on a slew of charges that included possession of a stolen motor vehicle, criminal damage to property and burglary. According to Peoria police, he was nabbed at about 8:30 a.m. Monday in the 700 block of East Virginia Avenue after they were called to the area on a report of a burglary, a police spokeswoman said. When officers arrived, they found the 2017 white Ford Econoline van which was reported stolen in Peoria Heights less than an hour beforehand. According to a report filed at the Peoria Heights Police Department, the van was taken from the 500 block of East Glen Avenue which is the Peoria Heights High School bus barn. A Peoria Heights officer was able to identify Lathum based upon security video footage which briefly showed his face. The van was reported stolen and within about 30 minutes, it was located at the East Bluff address, according to the report. The security footage from the school property allegedly showed Lathum taking items from the school's concession stand before he allegedly took the van., the report said. When officers searched the building on Virginia, they allegedly found Lathum trying to hide in a walk-in cooler inside the building with keys to the car and building keys within his reach, the report said. Maple Heights building damaged after truck slams into front
MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio (WJW) — A Maple Heights building is damaged after a pickup truck slammed through the front Friday evening. I-Team: Boy shot in Cleveland, taken to hospital According to a post on the Maple Heights Firefighters Local 1184 Facebook page, crews responded to the Vault Lofts at 15765 Broadway Avenue around 6:30 p.m. on reports of a pickup truck into the building. No injuries were reported, the post said, but the building was badly damaged at the point of impact. A towing company was called to the scene to remove the truck. There's no word on what caused the crash. What we know A 5-year-old boy was attacked by two dogs in Dearborn Heights on Thursday. It happened in the area of Evergreen and Ford. Footage from a nearby home showed a boy in the front yard facing off against two dogs. At one point, he tried to run before being pulled down by one of the dogs. According to Paul Vanderplow, the director of support services in Dearborn Heights, police responded and after tending to the child, went out to find the dogs. "We couldn't find them at first, and we've been looking for them since," said Vanderplow. According to the child's father, he suffered injuries to his neck and back, but is recovering. What we don't know Police have yet to find the dogs, which include a black German Shepherd and brown Pitbull. They have also ticketed the individual they believe to be the owner. "From what we're seeing on the home life of these animals, I would not say it is stable or consistent," said Vanderplow. "So that's been part of the problem as well."
