Guernsey landmarks lit up for VE Day

The States of Guernsey is marking VE Day by illuminating landmark buildings as well as a ceremonial Day marks the end of World War Two in Europe after Germany's surrender on 8 May 1945. Castle Cornet, Fort Grey and Beau Sejour Leisure Centre have been lit up in red, white and blue since Tuesday, and a two-minute silence was held at 12:00 Richard Cripwell was also due to light a beacon at Castle Cornet at 21:30 to honour people lost in the war. The States said the beacon lighting would coincide with others lit across the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and UK Overseas said the displays honoured the "bravery and sacrifice of those who secured the peace and freedom enjoyed today".The beacon lighting will be broadcast live through the Guernsey Museums Facebook page. 'Remembrance and gratitude' Helen Glencross, head of Heritage Services, said lighting up the island in red, white and blue was a "powerful tribute to the courage, sacrifice and resilience"."As we mark VE Day, these colours serve as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude for all who fought for freedom and helped shape the peace we enjoy today," she said, "I hope people will tune in to watch the ceremonial beacon, which will mark the beginning of a fantastic weekend of celebrations being planned to mark Guernsey's Liberation."

Guernsey children to receive replica medal for Liberation

Liberation Day 80th anniversary events unveiled

Celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of Guernsey's Liberation Day will include live music, a vintage fair and fireworks, organisers said. The States of Guernsey released details for the event on 9 May which will mark the island's liberation from German forces at the end of World War Two in 1945. It said live entertainment was planned across several venues in St Peter Port as well as events in St Pierre du Bois, St Andrews, St Martins, Vale and Sark. Organisers have asked for volunteers to come forward and help run the celebrations. The States said the annual parade to mark the start of Liberation Day would begin at 11:00 GMT before a service at the Town Church at 12:00. Events in St Peter Port have also been planned at North Beach, Crown Pier, Albert Pier, The Albany, Castle Emplacement, Castle Cornet and Market Square. There is set to be live music, a vintage fair, a display of military vehicles and a cavalcade before the traditional fireworks display to mark the end of the celebrations. It added other events would include a mini parade in St Pierre du Bois and a parishioners tea party in Vale. Liberation Day organisers said anyone who would like to volunteer should attend an information day which will take place at Les Cotils at 17:30 on 26 March. Helen Glencross, head of heritage services and chair of the Liberation Day Oversight Committee, the team was still needed more volunteers. She said: "I would ask any islanders who can give up just a couple of hours of their day to marshal, steward or lend a hand to register." People can register via the Volunteer in Guernsey website. A prestigious photography exhibition is coming back to Guernsey for its 60th year. The Wildlife Photographer of the Year has been showcasing nature from all over the world since 1965. The exhibition was opening at Guernsey Museum on 31 January, which has been hosting it for 30 years, organisers said. Helen Glencross, head of heritage Services, said: "We are extremely privileged to be hosting this wonderful exhibition, produced by the Natural History Museum, again this year." Museum director Dr Doug Gurr said: "As we celebrate sixty years of Wildlife Photographer of the Year, we also celebrate the generations of visitors who have been inspired by the beauty and majesty of its images, and the millions of connections made with nature."
