This new assortment will include items such as swimwear, outdoor entertainment, snacks, beauty, home, and the like. "With more than 10,000 new items across our assortment, and many starting at just $1, we have something for every celebration — and it's all fresh, fun, inspiring, and incredibly affordable," said Rick Gomez, executive vice president and chief commercial officer, Target, in a recent press release. Walmart rival makes announcement consumers will love

The past few years have been unquestionably tough for retailers. The shopping landscape has changed in the wake of rampant inflation. Consumers don't have the spending power they once did to shop on a whim, now that everything from food to utilities to shelter costs more than it used to. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Not surprisingly, a general pullback in consumer spending has caused many big names in retail to struggle. For others, it's meant closing underperforming stores and rethinking operating strategies. Image source: Santiago/Getty Images You'd think a big-box giant like Target would be well-positioned to thrive even at a time when consumers are cutting back on spending. But like many of its smaller competitors, Target has experienced its share of financial woes. In 2023, Target suffered a big blow when consumers boycotted the store over its Pride collection. More recently, Target made the decision to scale back its diversity, equity, and inclusion program. That, too, caused an outrage. And with consumers as a whole spending more cautiously, the company has faced its share of financial challenges. Now, with the threat of tariffs looming, it's unclear as to what's in store for Target. Not only might tariffs force Target to raise prices, but they might also shrink the company's margins. And let's not forget that many retailers could face inventory shortages as tariff policies come to a head. While Target does source some of its products domestically, like many of its competitors, it also relies heavily on foreign countries to stock its shelves. If some of Target's suppliers are forced to shutter due to declining orders caused by tariffs, the company could be in serious trouble. While many retailers are worried about how they'll procure inventory in light of tariffs, Target is making plans to boost its inventory. Between now and August, the company plans to introduce 10,000 new products online and in stores. Target's new products will run the gamut from outdoor entertainment items to home goods to apparel. This aligns with its long-standing strategy to position itself as a big name in the beauty space, which is apparent from its partnership with Ulta. Not only is Target expanding its inventory, but it's also introducing "Hello Summer Saturdays." Every Saturday during the month of June, Target stores will host events that include free giveaways for Target Circle members. "Millions of families have been counting down the days to summer, and the Target team is excited to help them make the most of the season," said Rick Gomez, Target's executive VP and chief commercial officer. "With more than 10,000 new items across our assortment, and many starting at just $1, we have something for every celebration - and it's all fresh, fun, inspiring and incredibly affordable." Target has been making a concerted effort to introduce new products that are competitively priced. Of the 10,000 new items it's bringing to stores between now and August, thousands will be priced below $20. Ahead of summer, Target debuts 10K products with thousands priced under $20

This story was originally published on Retail Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Retail Dive newsletter. Starting Thursday, Target plans to add more than 10,000 items into its stores and website through August for the summer. The retailer plans to offer new swimwear, outdoor entertainment, snacks, beauty, home and other products, with thousands of the items priced below $20. Coinciding with the launch, the mass merchant will host a 'Hello Summer' sale starting Sunday and running through May 26. After that, the retailer will have 'Hello Summer Saturdays' events every Saturday in June, which will feature giveaways and offer limited-time discounts to Target Circle members on products like apparel, swimwear, suncare and outdoor toys, according to a press release. Target is also decorating its stores to evoke a 'nostalgic, coastal-inspired experience.' The stores will feature 'The Boardwalk Shop,' a food and beverage station; 'Build Your Beach Bag' stations where customers can find various travel-sized products; and 'The Sun Shop,' where shoppers can find suncare products. Ahead of the summer months, Target is refreshing its merchandise and emphasizing its low prices. Around the same time last year, the retailer reduced prices on roughly 5,000 items before Memorial Day. And before last year's holiday season, the retailer made additional price cuts on more than 2,000 products, including health, beauty, snacks, beverage and grocery items. The latest offering features thousands of goods under $20, with some starting at $1, and comes as consumers face economic pressures. The National Retail Federation last month predicted a 'slower trajectory for consumer spending' this year as a trade war looms. Target, like many retailers, is also preparing for any potential tariff impacts on its business. In its Q4 earnings report, the company said its net sales dipped 3% from the previous year to $30.9 billion. Analysts at the time pointed out how Target remains vulnerable to tariff impacts in the coming months. Chris Bottiglieri, equity research analyst at BNP Paribas Exane, said the retailer faces 'significant risk from tariffs and cyclical downside if the consumer slows further on federal cuts or rising inflation on the back of tariffs.' The rollout of Target's new summer assortment comes as the retailer also works to improve its merchandise more broadly. As part of a plan rolled out in March, Target will revamp merchandising in key categories and invest between $4 billion and $5 billion into its stores, supply chains and technological infrastructure.
