Chad: Ex-PM Masra arrested over deadly clashes

Succes Masra Chad's former prime minister, Succes Masra, was arrested on Friday for allegedly inciting hatred that resulted in the deaths of dozens earlier this week. While Masra's party said he was "kidnapped" by the judicial police on Friday morning, public prosecutor Oumar Mahamat Kedelaye said that Chad's former premier was being investigated on charges that included incitement of hatred and revolt, complicity in murder and the desecration of graves. What else did the prosecutor say about Masra's arrest? The prosecutor said investigations by the judicial police pointed to Masra's involvement in a clash that killed 42 people on Wednesday in the southwest province of Logone Occidental, mostly women and children. "This alleged involvement incited the population against a community residing in the same locality. Messages were circulated, notably on social networks, calling on the population to arm themselves against other citizens," the prosecutor said. Meanwhile, Masra's opposition Transformers party said in a statement that their leader was "kidnapped" in his residence and expressed "deep concern over this brutal action carried out outside any known judicial procedures and in blatant violation of the civil and political rights guaranteed by the constitution." What is the political crisis in Chad? In 2022, Masra went into exile after the military government suspended his party and six others in a clampdown on civil unrest over President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno's decision to extend his rule by two more years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Avoid Emotional Trades in Volatile Markets – Master Swing with Hemant TradeWise Learn More Undo More than 60 people were killed in the unrest, which the government said was as "an attempted coup." Following his return to Chad, Masra was appointed prime minister in January 2024 in an effort to appease the opposition, four months before the presidential election. Masra, who served as Chad prime minister from January to May 2024, faced off against Deby in presidential elections a year ago. One of Deby's most vociferous opponents, he won 18.5% of the vote while the incumbent secured 61.3%. But Masra cried foul, alleging electoral fraud. While Muslims are predominant in the vast Sahara desert and the arid Sahel region in Chad's north and center, the far south of the country is largely Christian and animist. Masra belongs to the Ngambay subgroup of the Sara people who traditionally inhabit southern Chad and among whom the former prime minister enjoys widespread support.

Triumph Scrambler 400 XC vs RE Himalayan 450: Specs, prices & more compared

Triumph Scrambler 400 XC vs RE Himalayan 450 comparison. With the launch of the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC in India, the mid-capacity adventure segment has welcomed a serious contender. Priced at Rs 2.94 lakh, ex-showroom, the Scrambler 400 XC slots itself as a more off-road-capable version of the Scrambler 400X. Its primary rival in the Indian market is none other than the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 . Here's a quick look at how these models stack up against each other in terms of engine specs, hardware, and more. Triumph Scrambler 400 XC vs RE Himalayan 450: Engine The Triumph Scrambler 400 XC draws its power from a 398cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder motor that churns out 39.5 bhp and 37.5 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed gearbox. In contrast, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is equipped with a slightly larger 452cc engine that also produces 40 bhp but delivers a bit more torque at 40 Nm. Both bikes come with a six-speed transmission. For the unversed, the Scrambler 400 XC is designed with off-road adventures in mind, featuring an engine guard, sump guard, high-mounted front fender, flyscreen, and tank pads as standard. The Scrambler 400 XC rides on cross-spoke wheels, with a 19-inch front and a 17-inch rear, shod in tubeless dual-purpose tyres. The Himalayan 450, on the other hand, is fitted with a more off-road-oriented 90/91-21 front tyre, paired with the same 140/80-17 at the rear. When it comes to stopping power, both bikes are fitted with a 320 mm single disc at the front. However, there's a slight difference at the rear. While the Scrambler 400 XC comes with a 230 mm disc, the Himalayan opts for a larger 270 mm unit. Both motorcycles are equipped with dual-channel ABS for enhanced safety. A notable advantage for the Scrambler 400 XC is its inclusion of traction control, something the Himalayan 450 misses out on. The Triumph model also weighs slightly less at 190 kg compared to the Himalayan's 198 kg, which could make a difference during tight off-roading. Triumph Scrambler 400 XC vs RE Himalayan 450: Pricing Priced at Rs 2.94 lakh, ex-showroom, the Scrambler 400 XC, is slightly more expensive than the Himalayan 450 which comes at a starting price of Rs 2.85 lakh, ex-showroom. However, depending on the colour scheme, the prices top out at Rs 2.93 lakh, ex-showroom, for the Kamet White variant - putting it on par with the Scrambler 400 XC.

French court gives Depardieu 18-month suspended sentence for sexual assault

Plaintiff Amelie K (left) and Gerard Depardieu (AP) PARIS: A Paris court on Tuesday handed French cinema icon Gerard Depardieu an 18-month suspended sentence after convicting him of sexually assaulting two women on a film set in 2021. The Paris court also ordered that Depardieu, 76, who was not present in court for the verdict, be inscribed on the sex offenders' register. Depardieu, who has acted in more than 200 films and television series, is the highest-profile figure caught up in France 's response to the #MeToo movement . By coincidence, the verdict was delivered on the first day of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival , France's most prestigious cinema showcase where Depardieu won best actor in 1990 and was for years the subject of adulation. The whereabouts of Depardieu were not immediately clear. He had in April been working in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores on a new film directed by his friend, actor Fanny Ardant, who has been outspoken in supporting him. His lawyer, who represented Depardieu in court, said he would appeal the conviction. Around 20 women have accused Depardieu of assault or inappropriate behaviour but this was the first case to come to court. The trial related to charges of sexual assault during the filming in 2021 of "Les Volets Verts" ("The Green Shutters") by director Jean Becker. The plaintiffs were a set dresser, 54, identified only as Amelie, and a 34-year-old assistant director, who accused the actor of sexual assault. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Avoid Emotional Trades in Volatile Markets – Master Swing with Hemant TradeWise Learn More Undo Lack of remorse In March, lead prosecutor Laurent Guy recommended an 18-month suspended jail term for Depardieu, arguing that the sentence "takes into account the total lack of remorse" shown by the defendant. Amelie testified that Depardieu pinned her down in 2021 on set, saying, "he was very strong" and "groped" her. She also said Depardieu made "obscene remarks" and suggestions, boasting he could "give women an orgasm without touching them". The 34-year-old plaintiff said Depardieu initially assaulted her when she accompanied him from his dressing room to the set. "It was nighttime... he put his hand on my buttocks," she said, adding that the actor assaulted her on two other occasions. Depardieu denied sexually assaulting the women. "I'm vulgar, rude, foul-mouthed, I'll accept that," he told the court, but he added: "I don't touch." "I adore women and femininity," he also said, while describing the #MeToo movement as a "reign of terror". Throughout the trial, Depardieu was supported by his daughter Roxane, his ex-partner Karine Silla and actor Vincent Perez. And on Monday, he won public backing from French film star Brigitte Bardot. "Those who have talent and put their hands on a girl's bottom are thrown in the gutter," Bardot said. "We could at least let them get on with their lives. They can't live anymore." Sexism and misogyny Lawyers for the two plaintiffs denounced the approach of Depardieu's defence team. The actor's lawyer, Jeremie Assous, called the two women "liars" and "hysterical", arguing that they were working for the cause of "rabid feminism". Claude Vincent, the assistant director's lawyer, said: "What we witnessed was not a defence strategy" but "an apology for sexism". In an open letter, nearly 200 French lawyers urged the judiciary to fight what they called courtroom sexism. Depardieu's lawyer had "used sexism and misogyny to his heart's delight" to discredit the plaintiffs and their legal team, they said. Depardieu has also been indicted in another case following a rape complaint filed by actor Charlotte Arnould, 29. Prosecutors have requested a trial. In April, French MPs criticised "endemic" abuse in the entertainment industry after a six-month inquiry. Depardieu became a star in France from the 1980s, winning the Best Actor award at the Cannes film festival in 1990 for his performance in "Cyrano de Bergerac".

French PM slams 'urban rodeos' after firefighter critically injured

Representative AI image A firefighter in France was in a critical condition Saturday after being hit in what appeared to be a deliberate attack by a 19-year-old motorist as Prime Minister Francois Bayrou denounced the "curse" of urban rodeo stunts plaguing French cities. France has a tradition of " urban rodeos ", in which young motorists and bike riders perform noisy, high-speed stunts, disrupting traffic. Interior minister Bruno Retailleau was expected to visit the scene in the eastern town of Evian-les-Bains later Saturday. Bayrou said the urban rodeos were a "curse" many French cities and towns struggled with and said the government was working to clamp down on them. "There is so much madness and disorder in the minds of people who believe that others don't matter, that their lives, their safety and their peace of mind don't matter," he told reporters. J&K CM after explosions heard across Srinagar The victim, a 38-year-old volunteer firefighter, was hit at around 6:00 am Saturday while trying to stop an urban rodeo involving two cars near his fire station. Prosecutors said several firefighters asked the drivers to stop. A "verbal altercation" ensued, with one of the drivers, a 19-year-old man, "deliberately" ramming a firefighter with his vehicle, the public prosecutor's office said. He also "narrowly missed hitting another", prosecutors added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Avoid Emotional Trades in Volatile Markets – Master Swing with Hemant TradeWise Undo The driver has been taken into custody. Officers found three canisters of laughing gas, a bottle of vodka and a can of Red Bull in his vehicle, which had impact marks on the front and cracks on the windscreen. He is known to the police, and his driving licence has been suspended since mid-April. The other driver was also taken into custody. Completely insane "It's completely insane that someone would attack firefighters," Martial Saddier, head of the Haute-Savoie department, told a local radio station. One of them was hit "with extreme violence, which is why he is in such a serious condition", he added. Saddier said the firefighter had been airlifted to the hospital in Annecy in southeastern France. "Zero tolerance for these individuals who lack judgement and show no respect for public safety and order," Jean-Paul Bosland, president of the National Federation of Firefighters of France, said on X. The rowdy races and stunts, which have become increasingly popular, especially in low-income neighbourhoods, have caused multiple accidents. Some people however defend them as a gritty urban subculture that provides an outlet for disaffected youths. "Rodeo", a film that appears to glorify the gatherings, generated strong buzz at the Cannes film festival in 2022. On Friday, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said the "scourge of urban rodeos" was "ruining the lives of many French people". He called on prosecutors to take "the strongest possible action. "From now on, they must systematically seize vehicles involved in rodeos and, as the law allows, sell them or have them destroyed even before the trial," said Darmanin. "No more impunity!" On Friday, around 500 cars and nearly 3,000 people gathered for an urban rodeo in the southwestern city of Bordeaux before being dispersed by police. A week ago, a local councillor in southwestern France was assaulted after trying to stop a motorcycle rodeo. He suffered several fractures to his face. France has not taken as drastic measures as Britain, where police are authorised to ram their cars into suspected criminal riders to knock them over, a practice known as "tactical contact".
