Urgent beach warning as two Brits poisoned on UK island & rushed to A&E after eating dangerous plant with NO antidote

The pair were found with 'elevated pulses' HIGHLY TOXIC Urgent beach warning as two Brits poisoned on UK island & rushed to A&E after eating dangerous plant with NO antidote AN URGENT beach warning has been issued after two Brits were poisoned on a UK island and rushed to hospital. The pair has eaten a plant that contained a poison with no antidote available. Advertisement 3 Two people who were suffering from Hemlock poisoning were rescued Credit: Alamy 3 Roots of Hemlock Water Dropwort are considered potentially fatal Credit: Alamy 3 The pair were rescued from Sully Island on May 3 Credit: Alamy Emergency services rushed an island off the coast of Wales on May 3 after reports of a couple who had been poisoned. The Brits, who were on Sully Island off the Vale of Glamorgan, were thought to have ingested Hemlock - a highly poisonous plant. Sully Island is a small, uninhabited island near Barry and is about 450 metres long. The island is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, home to plenty of diverse and rare plants. Advertisement It offers stunning views of the Welsh coastline and no permanent population, which meant rescue had to come from elsewhere. The RNLI's inshore lifeboats (ILBs) were deployed from Barry Dock to the eastern side of the tidal island. The rescue charity said: "Barry Dock RNLI's inshore lifeboat was tasked by HM Coastguard on Saturday, May 3, to locate, assess, and medevac two casualties on Sully Island reported to have potentially ingested hemlock. "The volunteer crew were advised the casualties, experienced foragers, were on the eastern beach and were located quickly. Advertisement "On arrival the casualties were showing signs of anxiety so the crew immediately fitted them with lifejackets and embarked both onto the ILB for immediate transport to the mainland." Hemlock, also known as hemlock water-dropwort and hemlock root, is common in shallow water and appears like a cluster of white flowers. Urgent warning over deadly plant worse than Japanese Knotweed... do you have it near you It's often found near rivers or fresh water but can be washed up on beaches after storms. Beachgoers in Britain have been warned keep their pooches on a lead as a precautionary measure in certain spots, with four dogs having died from the plant in the Newquay, Cornwall. Advertisement Thankfully for the foragers, the RNLI confirmed that after the rescue, the pair on Sully Island made a full recovery. They said: 'Once ashore they were handed to Barry coastguard rescue team (CRT) who identified elevated pulse rates. "Oxygen was prepared from the ILB's supply with an RNLI crew member staying to assist the CRT with care. 'The officer in charge remained in contact with the ambulance service while the crew monitored the casualties. Advertisement "As the tide fell the ILB could not remain on scene so with their condition stable and a plan in place Barry Dock ILB stood down returned to station and was made ready for service while the casualties were taken to A&E.' SYMPTOMS OF HEMLOCK POISONING Hemlock poisoning will show symptoms after around 30 minutes, or up to 3 hours. The plant can cause a painful rash or burning on the eyes if touched. Ingesting any part of the plant can lead to poisoning which can lead to respiratory failure. Advertisement Symptoms include: Trembling Burning sensation in digestive tract Increased salivation Dilated pupils Muscle pain and weakness Decreased heart rate Loss of speech Convulsions Unconsciousness If you believe you have symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately. If possible, take a sample of the plant if it's safe do to so by using plastic gloves - or take photos. Do not try and make the infected throw up. Advertisement

Carolina Chauffe bring her music to Chicago's Empty Bottle as Hemlock

'I'm not in the business of twisting arms, whether it's my own or someone else's,' said Carolina Chauffe. Open, warm, and highly communicative, Chauffe, who performs as Hemlock, has made a name for herself around the country by embracing a free-spirited and loose approach to her music and her everyday life. Chauffe has been on tour for nearly a year and a half while the rest of her bandmates are still based in and living in the city. From the deep South to the upper Plains, Chauffe has found community and support for her music. And life on the road hasn't stopped her from creating and releasing new music. Some of this work can be heard on '444,' a best-of compilation of re-recorded cuts from Chauffe's ongoing song-a-day project. Audiences can catch another brief Hemlock return on April 10 at Empty Bottle. 'It has been miraculous and exhausting,' she said of her 'routine migratory patterns' of life on the road. Chauffe described herself as a follower of open doors. And so, as opportunities kept presenting themselves, her time on the road kept stretching onward. Since embarking on her tour, she has traveled to Colorado, Utah, Idaho and throughout the Pacific Northwest, among other parts of the country. Chauffe stays grounded through the support of her community. A willingness to rely on other people means that she must know how to ask for what she needs. Most nights, she sleeps in someone else's home, but there have been a handful of times when she's been in her car. It's not a glamorous life, but it's a satisfying one for Chauffe, who says this wide-reaching community of mutual reliance and dependability helps keep the whole experience enjoyable and motivating, rather than daunting. 'It's kind of an ongoing free fall with an infinite safety net from people that I care about in all corners of the country and beyond,' she said. Yet, she still encounters challenges, at least when it comes to her songwriting process. A solitary writer, Chauffe said it's difficult to find solo time to work on new music when surrounded by other people. 'It's one of those things where my well of inspiration is overflowing and I've got lots of notes in my phone's Notes app of little phrases, lyrics, potential songs, but not a lot of time to flesh them out until I settle down again,' she said. To work around this situation, she creates hard deadlines for herself ('gentle pressures,' she explained), like last November's song-a-day project. First launched in 2019, this yearly, month-long creative exercise gives her an extended opportunity to gain relative stillness during the chaos of life on the road by focusing on her songwriting. Chauffe relied on a practice of 'first thought, best thought' to craft her songs. Since first launching the project, Chauffe has chosen a different month each year, with the goal of creating a whole, long-form calendar of her music and songwriting journey over the course of 12 years. Some of her past song-a-day works were eventually fleshed out to their full potential for '444,' a 12-track compilation of Hemlock's past music. The result is a quietly compelling body of folk that is evocative and poignant. 'Day One,' the first song she created in February 2019 after launching the project, softly opens the compilation. 'Hyde Park,' first crafted in December 2021, is a bright, bouncy number that is given a rumbling injection of life from the propulsive instrumentation from her band. 'Hazards,' from May 2023, is given a more guttural edge that will remind the listener of early PJ Harvey. In its original form, the music was solid. On '444,' Hemlock sounds vital. For listeners interested in diving into her rich and comprehensive body of work (she's released 10 albums since 2018), '444' is a great place to start. Outside of music, Chauffe has plans to find a bedroom again that she can call her own. 'I think doing (touring) indefinitely is not the truest way to honor my own boundaries and energy and bandwidth,' she acknowledged. 'But I'm not willing to compromise or settle on what feels like the right spot for me. I really trust the cosmic, serendipitous presentation of what that will be.' Ideally, it'll happen around the summertime. But that's still a few months off. In the meantime, she'll continue this journey of traveling, reciprocity and performing her music for old fans and new communities. 'I feel really confident, more than I ever have before,' she said. 'I feel like my feet are underneath me in this practice, and any kind of impostor syndrome that I may have had when I was younger doesn't feel like it's with me anymore.' Britt Julious is a freelance critic.

Dog dies shortly after visit to beach where other dogs got ill

A woman has described how her dog died less than 24 hours after visiting a beach where a number of pets have fallen ill this Tipping, 45, said Badger, a five-year-old springer spaniel, had a number of seizures after leaving Llansteffan Beach in Carmarthenshire, and died the next pet owners have reported their dogs becoming ill after visiting the beach, but the cause of the apparent sickness is still unknown. Carmarthenshire council and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) said they were aware of reports of dogs becoming sick, but that no source of harm had been found, while Welsh Water said it had not had any contact from customers about issues in the area. Mrs Tipping, from Llangadog, Carmarthenshire, took Badger and her other dog Ida to the beach on 24 stayed with her, while Badger ran on ahead to explore part of the beach that had rock pools."It was low tide, so some of the rock pools we haven't seen before were open for Badger to go into - he's a bit more adventurous than Ida so I let him go ahead," Mrs Tipping said she did not see Badger eat anything, and that the "beach looked like it should".They spent a few hours at the beach and began driving back in the afternoon, and it was on the return car journey that Badger became unwell."In the boot of the car I heard a thump, and it must have been Badger falling to the ground," she said. "When I stopped he was lying on his back and his tongue was out, but he was still breathing." Mrs Tipping said she took Badger to the local vet, when he started having seizures, which was initially put down to heat stroke, but they kept was then taken to a different vet in Swansea, and despite being giving medication died early the next morning "not even 24 hours after we arrived at the beach".Mrs Tipping said she had seen other reports of dogs getting ill after visiting the beach on a local Facebook page, as well as warnings from local vets."My biggest concern is, there have been a number of other dogs who have gotten ill after visiting the beach, and I don't want this to continue happening," she said."Lots of families and dog walkers visit that beach, and I don't want this happening to other dogs or families.""What's frustrating is we don't know for certain what it is." Carmarthenshire council said it had become aware of concerns raised by the public, and that it was urging dog owners to be urged people to be aware of Hemlock, a "poisonous plant that produces umbrella-like clusters of white flowers" in summer. The plan can be found in damp places, such as ditches, riverbanks and waste ground, the council said, adding that it is unlikely to be found in exposed areas like beaches "unless its roots are washed up on shore".A spokesperson for NRW said: "We have received a number of reports of dogs becoming sick after visiting Llansteffan Beach in Carmarthenshire, however there have been no reports of pollution."Our environment officers have carried out a visual inspection of the beach trying to identify any potential source of harm but none has been found."A Welsh Water spokesperson said: "Our storm overflows in this area have not spilled since storm conditions at the beginning of March."We have not had any contact from customers on this issue."
