Spirit.Ed: Celebrate National Martini Day 2025 With One Of These Martinis

Today (June 19) is National Martini Day, and we're putting a focus on the classic cocktail along with some riffs. Whether using gin or vodka, a Martini can go in a lot of directions, and we've got some unique twists in our roundup below. If I sound like a broken record in this next sentence, forgive me, because I love a Martini made with gin. Gin, which wasn't my favorite in my early days of imbibing, is probably my favorite spirit and far more versatile than expected. As I've learned over time, the origin of National Martini Day is hard to pinpoint, as is the actual history of the Martini. Some historians point to the Martinez cocktail as the precursor to the Martini, which was introduced to the masses in the 1800s. There are also claims that the drink rose to prominence in 1910 at New York's Knickbocker Hotel. What we can determine from older bartending manuals is that the drink usually involved gin, Italian fortified wine, and bitters. My first Martini was made with Hendrick's Gin, a curious choice for some due to the brand's infusion of cucumber and rose, along with familiar gin botanicals of chamomile, elderflower, juniper, lemon peel, orange peel, caraway, coriander, cubeb berries, angelica root, yarrow root and orris root. Thanks to the expert bartenders of now-closed Washington, D.C. bar, Wisdom, I became adept at understanding different gins and expanding my choices. In this year's National Martini Day roundup, we have some familiar brands I've featured before, like Still G.I.N. and Reyka Vodka, along with brands new to me, Prairie Organic Spirits and Four Pillars. I didn't get a lot of pitches for this day, so this will be a quick read. If there are some brands or recipes we need to know about, email D.L. Chandler at dchandler@ to get those on our radar for future roundups. Have a happy National Martini Day. — Photo: Ali Waxman / Getty Celebrate National Martini Day 2025 With One Of These Martinis was originally published on Source:Still G.I.N. Broken Shaker

We don't like to use the phrase tropical oasis all willy-nilly, but it actually fits the mold at Broken Shaker, the Miami import that landed atop The Freehand Hotel in Gramercy back in 2019. But thumpin' 'clubstaurant' it is not, as the 18th-floor rooftop channels the island lifestyle with reggae tracks on the speakers, tan leather couches and greenery that completely spills out onto the outdoor rooftop. Speaking of the outside, the terrace gives you a sightseeing advantage, with views of the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and the full scope of downtown Manhattan. Drinks call out the city below with the Up On The Roof (Su Casa mezcal, chambord, watermelon, basil and fire tincture) and the Asphalt Jungle (Hendrick's Gin, Choya Yuzu-shu, Giffard Lichi-Li and pear). Or you can always catch the rotating frozen or punch of the day. When the need for snacking hits, you can fill up your table with wild-caught shrimp ceviche, tacos with mushrooms and crispy cheese and The Broken Shaker Burger with the option to double up on patties.

Hendrick's Gin is giving away free cocktails this World Cucumber Day – here's how to score one

June just got a little more curious. Building on last year's wildly delightful run, Hendrick's Great Cucumber Exchange is back – and it's as wonderfully whimsical as ever. In honour of World Cucumber Day on June 14, Hendrick's Gin invites you to embrace the whimsy by trading in a humble cucumber for its gin-based tipple at over 95 participating restaurants and bars across Singapore from June 16 to 19. Because why use cash or card when you can pay with a cucumber? It's a curiously fun twist to cocktail culture – just the way Hendrick's Gin likes it. Why cucumbers? Hendrick's Gin isn't just using cucumbers for novelty. It's quite literally in the unusual spirit. The gin's famously smooth, floral flavour comes from a unique distillation process that infuses cucumber and rose, alongside a blend of 11 botanicals, making the inimitable green fruit more than just a garnish – it's in Hendrick's DNA. What are the free Hendrick's Gin cocktails? This year, you get to choose between Hendrick's Flora Adora & Tonic and Hendrick's Grand Cabaret & Tonic, the latest limited edition releases from Hendrick's Cabinet of Curiosities. Hendrick's Flora Adora is an English garden in a glass, bringing together juniper, coriander, and sweet botanicals with a flourish of Hendrick's signature herbal charm. Hendrick's Grand Cabaret, on the other hand, is a lush, fruity number that gives you a taste of Parisian history. It's laced with stone fruit notes, fresh herbs, and enough pizzazz to have your taste buds doing the cancan. Paired with fizzy, slightly sweet tonic water, both make for a well-balanced, flavour-forward post-work pick-me-up. How do I get one? Start by signing up here to receive your e-voucher. Then present your e-voucher and cucumber at any one of the participating venues, including Al Capone's, Another Bar, Middle Child, and LECOQ. Each exchange is valid for one drink per outlet. Check out the full list of venues here. No cucumber? You can still join in the fun too If you're in the CBD, keep your eyes peeled and your hands ready for Hendrick's dapper Cucumber Town Council. They will be roving the streets at lunch hours, handing out spare cucumbers, which are redeemable for a delectable gin libation at participating bars nearby. Scotland's top four 'best selling gins' and how much they cost

Whisky isn't the only drink Scotland is famous for. When it comes to spirits in Scotland, you mostly hear people talking about whisky. The amber distilled spirit is known as the country's national drink for a reason, with countless distilleries all over the country producing world-famous whiskies. However, there are also plenty of delicious gins that originate in Scotland. Whether from iconic distilleries or newer hidden gems, there is a wealth of Scottish gins waiting to be discovered. Online retailer Master of Malt has compiled a list of its best-selling Scottish gins. From Hendrick's to Blackwoods, there is a gin to suit every taste. Read on for the four best-selling gins on Master of Malt, and how much they cost. More information about each one can be found on the Master of Malt website. Hendrick's Gin Even if you are only a casual gin enjoyer, you will likely have heard of Hendrick's Gin. The popular gin is a mix of two spirits from two different types of stills. Hendrick's Gin includes notes of juniper, elderflower, lemon peel, coriander, and more. When making a gin and tonic with the spirit, it is customary to top it with a garnish of cucumber ribbon. As the moment, a 70cl bottle of Hendrick's Gin can be purchased for £30.90 from Master of Malt, down from its usual cost of £32.95. Elsewhere, you can buy a bottle for £33 from Sainsbury's. Isle Of Harris Gin Isle of Harris Gin is made on the Isle Of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. It is crafted with a mix of nine botanicals, such as sustainably harvested sugar kelp from local sea lochs. As a result, the gin has a maritime quality to it. Other ingredients include juniper, angelica, cassia, coriander, cubeb, liquorice root, orange peel, and orris root. A 70cl bottle of Isle of Harris gin can be purchased for £39.95 from Master of Malt, reduced from its standard price of £41.95. It is also available for £40.46 from Royal Mile Whiskies. The Botanist Cask Aged Gin Next up is The Botanist Cask Aged Gin, which is an offering from Bruichladdich distillery on Islay. The distillery created the concoction by treating its classic Botanist Islay Dry Gin with three years of cask maturation. The unique gin features a blend of oak and fragrant botanicals, as well as notes of fruit and vanilla. You may also taste hints of orchard fruits, buttery pastry, dried citrus, and more. The Botanist Cask Aged Gin is priced at £69.74 on Master of Malt, though the gin is currently out of stock. You can also order it for £62.96 from Royal Mile Whiskies. Blackwoods 2017 Vintage Dry Gin Finally, Blackwoods 2017 Vintage Dry Gin comes from the Blackwoods distillers in the Shetlands. Every year, the gin is made with botanicals that are available locally—giving each one its own unique flavour. This 2017 edition features notes of cassia and black pepper, as well as thyme, vanilla, and lemon zest. According to Master of Malt, it "ought to make for a fantastic Bramble cocktail". Blackwoods 2017 Vintage Dry Gin can usually be picked up from Master of Malt for £21.89, though it is currently out of stock. The gin can also be ordered from Drink Supermarket for £25.99.
