One killed, several injured in Russian attacks on Ukraine: Officials

Russia's overnight attacks killed one person in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region and injured several others in the northern city of Chernihiv, Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday. A private enterprise was hit in the small town of Balakliia, near the Russian border, killing one employee and injuring several others, said Vitali Karabanov, head of the town's military administration, on Telegram. 'A massive UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] attack on the town,' Karabanov said, without detailing the scale of the strike. The attacks came just hours after Russian and Ukrainian delegations met in Turkey for peace talks, during which Moscow reiterated that it would only end the war if Kyiv surrendered more territory and accepted limitations on the size of its armed forces. Ukraine has repeatedly rejected those conditions as equivalent to surrender. In Chernihiv, falling drone debris ignited multiple fires, including at residential homes, according to Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, head of the city's military administration. Four people were hospitalized, and another 20—among them eight children—received medical assistance at the scene, Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported. Photos posted on Telegram showed firefighters battling blazes in the dark and medics attending to children. In Odesa, Russian air strikes overnight damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, but no injuries were reported, Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov wrote on Telegram. The full scale of the Russian attacks was not immediately clear. There was no comment from Moscow, and Reuters could not independently verify the Ukrainian accounts. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched in February 2022. However, thousands of civilians—most of them Ukrainian—have been killed since the conflict began.

"The enemy targeted a residential area in a densely populated district of Odesa," Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov wrote on the Telegram messaging app, sharing pictures of a fire blazing and apartment buildings with windows smashed and facades damaged. Governor Oleh Kiper said that three people were injured in the attack and were receiving medical help. The Ukrainian air force said on Tuesday that Russia launched 54 drones in an attack overnight, of which 38 were shot down and 16 did not reach their targets, likely due to electronic warfare countermeasures. Kiper said the attack on Odesa damaged dwellings, civilian infrastructure, an educational institution and vehicles. Videos shared by the emergency services showed crews putting out a large fire in one of the damaged buildings. Odesa, with its three ports, has been a frequent target of Russian attacks in the more than three-year-old war with Russia.
