A 15-year-old boy has been detained in custody by the Winnipeg Police Service after an unprovoked machete attack, according to police.
Police said on June 27 around 8:20 p.m., a 68-year-old man was randomly assaulted in the 100 block of Henry Avenue by a teenage boy who was armed with a machete.
Witnesses surrounded the teenager so he could not leave the scene and flagged down patrol officers in the area, according to police.
Central District patrol officers provided first aid to the victim until paramedics arrived. The teenager was arrested and two machetes were recovered during the arrest.
The victim was transported to hospital in unstable condition, which has since been upgraded to stable condition. Police said he will require surgery.
The teenager was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.
