Former Tigers teammate issues public apology over brutal act towards Lachie Galvin

Wests Tigers winger Sunia Turuva admits he was wrong to mock Lachie Galvin in a social media post and says he patched things up with the 19-year-old before his former teammate joined Canterbury last week. Galvin signed a three-and-a-half year deal worth $7500,000 per season with the Bulldogs after being released early from his contract with the Tigers, having rejected the joint-venture's $6 million extension. The move to Canterbury ended weeks of drama surrounding Galvin and only came about after his management and the Bulldogs agreed to demands from the Tigers to sign a non-disparagement clause. It's essentially a legal move that prevents Galvin from discussing his exit from the Tigers, following reports the 19-year-old was considering legal action against the club over accusations of bullying. Central to those ugly claims were social media posts from Tigers stars Turuva and Jarome Luai that took aim at their former teammate. Luai shared a post that featured the words 'team first' which was widely viewed as a dig at Galvin. While Turuva's was less subtle and contained an image of Galvin's locker with a music backing track titled, 'Here Comes The Money', suggesting the teenager was only motivated by money. It led to suggestions of a divide among the Tigers' playing group. Speaking about his post ahead of the Tigers' round 14 match against his former side Penrith on Sunday, Turuva says he regrets his actions and admits he didn't anticipate the storm it would create. "Looking back on it, I wouldn't have done the post in the first place," the winger said. I didn't think of what he was going through at the time. I'm happy to see where he's at now and happy for the club as well, we're able to move on." "It is borderline (bullying) to have players having a crack on social media. It is bordering on going too far." Brandy on the social media posts from senior @WestsTigers players Do you think it's becoming a pile-on towards Galvin? #NRL @SENLeague — Vossy & Brandy SEN 1170AM Sydney (@VossyBrandySEN) April 15, 2025 The Tigers winger revealed that he held clear-the-air talks with Galvin to address the controversy before the 19-year-old departed for Canterbury as one of the NRL's biggest mid-season trades in recent memory. "We did speak about it, just trying to say that the club is bigger, trying to move on," Turuva said. "For myself, I thought it was a joke, but looking back on it now, I've got to be a bigger person. Just seeing where he's at now, I think it's a really good spot for him. It's a really good spot for the club as well. For us and for him, it's just good to move on now. We're able to leave it in our past." Turuva won two premierships with the Panthers and comes up against his former teammates for the first time in Tigers colours on Sunday. And the winger says his Penrith opposite Brian To'o has already started the mind games by sledging him as soon as he came from the field after the Panthers' 18-10 win over Parramatta last week. "He's been messaging me each day," Turuva said about his former teammate. "(He's) already trying to play mind games, trying to send photos from last year of me in the Panthers jersey. He's trying to tell me not to forget where I came from. "Yesterday, he said if they score on me he's going to bring me into their celebration. Hopefully Jeral (Skelton, To'o's opposite winger) can score on him and I can bring him into ours." RELATED: Family detail as Bellamy tipped for stunning switch to QLD team Nathan Cleary act comes to light after Panthers axe Test player Turuva also revealed that Luai missed training on Wednesday with flu symptoms but expects him to return for Friday's session and for Sunday's showdown against the reigning premiers. Edge defence has been a particular issue for Penrith this season and Turuva says he'll be hoping to cash in against his former club. "Scoring a couple of tries against the old team would be pretty good," he said. with AAP

NRL news: Andrew Johns whacks Jarome Luai move as ugly Lachlan Galvin detail called out in Tigers snub

Andrew Johns and Brad Fittler have hit out at the 'disgusting' treatment of Benji Marshall amid the Lachlan Galvin circus, while also taking aim at Jarome Luai and Sunia Turuva for their social media stance. Galvin has been at the centre of a NRL storm this week after the superstar five-eighth knocked back a five-year, $5 million deal with the Wests Tigers. And in a shock move that left many surprised, the Tigers confirmed Galvin would see out his contract and won't be at the club beyond 2026. Galvin is one of the most talented youngsters in the game and the move left Wests Tigers fans floored. Andrew Johns (pictured left) and Brad Fittler have hit out at the treatment of both Benji Marshall and Lachlan Galvin (pictured right) this week, while suggesting the decision to drop Galvin will change the Wests Tigers attack. (Images: Getty Images/Channel 9) Marshall announced his team to play the Parramatta Eels on Tuesday afternoon and Galvin was not included. And on Tuesday evening, Luai took so social media and posted a photo with the captain: 'Team first'. Luai's comment appears to be a dig at the Galvin situation suggesting Marshall has put the team first with his decision. ADVERTISEMENT Tigers winger Turuva then posted a video, which he's since made private, that contained an image of Galvin's locker and a backing musical track called 'Here Comes The Money', suggesting the youngster was only motivated by money. Turuva's post in particular has prompted fierce backlash with many suggesting the move went too far. Lachlan Galvin (pictured) will not be a Wests Tigers player in 2027. And while Johns admitted this is how many players communicate these days, he felt the social media treatment was 'hypocritical' from the former Panthers players. "I think if you asked [Luai and Turuva], they'd probably like to take that back, because they left Penrith to go to the Tigers. So it is hypocritical," Johns said on Channel 9's Freddy and The Eighth show. Fittler went further and ripped into the look from Luai and Turuva and the whole situation developing on social media. "You've got to say, it sort of says a lot about the club, I suppose, and with what's going on with Lachie," he said. "I don't think you would see this at Melbourne or some of the bigger clubs. "I think over [all the] talk at the moment, it's a really good opportunity just to say nothing and go and play footy. I find it quite disgusting what they're all doing on social media. It's terrible." While the look from the Tigers hasn't been great, Johns was quick to defend Marshall after some outside criticism. Jarome Luai takes a jab at Lachlan Galvin on his Instagram Story 👀😬🐴🐴🐴🐯 — The Cast Patrol (@thecastpatrol) April 15, 2025 Andrew Johns defends Benji Marshall The NRL legend defended Marshall from the reports Galvin didn't think he could develop under the former Tigers five-eighth, which was part of the reason he was moving on. In a developing situation for the Tigers,The Sydney Morning Herald reported the club's powerbrokers were told by Galvin's camp that the youngster didn't believe he could reach his playing potential under Marshall and that he "has no faith in his coach's ability". ADVERTISEMENT The report sent shockwaves through the NRL community and Johns has let rip at how it has unfolded. "I don't mind that he's leaving. It's just part of the game that players move on," Johns said. "What I hate is the narrative that he's moving on and they've bagged Benji. It is disgusting the way they've pushed that [story] out to further Lachlan's career," Johns added. "He's been a pawn in all this, I have no doubt. For a 19-year-old young man, he doesn't need this pressure [of signing a lucrative deal]. "Benji has played over 340-odd games of NRL, he's won a world cup, he's won a Golden Boot and he's played over 30-odd Tests for the Kiwis. If anyone is qualified to coach a young five-eight or half, it's Beniji. Alongside him [at the Wests Tigers] is a bloke called Jarome Luai who has done it at all levels — won comps, Origins, played for Samoa. I find it really disrespectful the way they've tried to attack Benji." (Photo by) Brad Fittler raises Tigers doubt without Lachlan Galvin Unfortunately, Fittler admitted dropping Galvin is going to result in a huge change to their attacking style with four of the five tries on the weekend coming down the right side. This is Galvin's attacking side and the 19-year-old has recorded six try assists so far this season. "If you watch on the weekend, four tries were scored down the right hand side, that's Lachie's side. That's Jahream Bula as well," Fittler said of the Tigers' attack. ADVERTISEMENT "If you watch, they were just attacking the what you have to do now is change the whole dynamics of what they are doing. This is going to cost the Tigers." Johns claimed it was smart to protect Galvin in NSW Cup for a couple of weeks, but felt the five-eighth can't dwell there for too long with the situation becoming 'untenable' at the Tigers.
