Yandy Díaz powers Rays past Marlins 3-2; Rasmussen's streak of 23 scoreless innings halted in 1st
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Yandy Díaz hit a tying two-run homer in the fifth inning and his double in the eighth led to the eventual winning run as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 on Sunday. Díaz homered off Miami reliever Valente Bellozo in the fifth, tying the game at 2. He doubled off Bellozo (1-3) with one out in the eighth and was replaced by pinch runner José Caballero, who stole third and scored on a Brandon Lowe's sacrifice fly off Calvin Faucher to make it 3-2. Tampa Bay's Drew Rasmussen had his MLB-leading streak of 23 scoreless innings halted in the first. Xavier Edwards had a leadoff single and advanced two bases on a groundout by Jesús Sánchez when the Rays failed to cover third base. Otto Lopez had a streak-ending RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Ronny Henriquez and Cade Gibson pitched a scoreless inningss following two shutout innings by Miami opener Anthony Veneziano. Bellozo walked Taylor Walls in the fifth before giving up Díaz's ninth home run that tied it at 2. Marlins rookie Heriberto Hernandez got the start at DH a day after he drove in the winning run with a pinch hit in the 10th inning of Miami's 11-10 victory. He singled the first three times up. He led off the fifth with a hit off Rasmussen, took second on a two-out wild pitch and scored on a base hit by Sánchez for a 2-0 lead. Rasmussen allowed two runs on six hits in six innings. He had won four straight starts and hadn't surrendered a run since losing to the Brewers on May 11. Edwin Uceta (5-1) struck out three in two perfect innings for the win. The Rays and the Marlins (24-39) split six games this season after Tampa Bay (35-30) had won the season series six straight years. Marlins halt skid with 11-10 win over Rays in extras
June 7 - Heriberto Hernandez had a pinch-hit RBI single in the 10th inning to lift the visiting Miami Marlins to a wild 11-10 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. Miami bounced back from squandering a 10-6 lead and earned the advantage after Hernandez's base hit to shallow center field off Garrett Cleavinger (0-2) plated inherited runner Otto Lopez. Second baseman Xavier Edwards threw out Kameron Misner at the plate in the bottom of the 10th to help secure the win for Cade Gibson (1-3), who did not allow a hit over two scoreless innings. The Marlins evened the series at one win apiece and spoiled the day for the Rays, who saw Evan Longoria sign a ceremonial one-day contract and retire with the team. Miami's Jesus Sanchez belted a three-run homer and drove in five runs, Liam Hicks ripped a two-run double and Edwards also drove in two runs. Dane Myers added an RBI double for the Marlins, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Tampa Bay matched a season high with five homers, highlighted by Christopher Morel's power surge in which he launched a three-run blast in the second and a solo shot in the sixth. Taylor Walls belted a homer and drove in three runs, Danny Jansen added a two-run shot and Brandon Lowe had a solo homer for the Rays, who saw their four-game winning streak come to a halt. Miami erupted for six runs in the fifth to take a 10-6 lead before Tampa Bay responded with three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to forge a tie. Morel capped his two-homer performance by launching a fly ball that sailed just inside the left field foul pole in the sixth. Walls added a two-run shot to right-center field in the sixth and Lowe leveled the contest with his blast to center field in the seventh. Morel's three-run homer and Walls' RBI double staked Tampa Bay to an early 4-0 lead. Edwards' double drove in a run and Sanchez's fifth homer of the season knotted the contest in the third. Jansen's blast to left field regained the advantage for the Rays before the Marlins countered with a big inning in the fifth. Marlins reinstate OL Dane Myers, designate Mervis and Simon for assignment
MIAMI — The Miami Marlins re-instated outfielder Dane Myers on Friday from the 10-day injured list as part of a series of roster moves that also included designating opening day first baseman Matt Mervis for assignment. Myers went on the IL on May 12 with a right oblique strain and made a rehab appearance with Triple-A Jacksonville. Mervis, acquired from Chicago last December, was one of the Marlins' best hitters over the first month of the season, with six home runs and 12 RBIs through the first 20 games. The 27-year-old was 5-for-45 (.111) with no homers, no RBIs and 20 strikeouts over the past month. 'Matt I think just didn't quite really get it going offensively,' Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said ahead of Friday's game against San Francisco, 'and (we) just felt like it was time ... to shift gears a little bit and give some other guys a chance to come up here and see if they can be a spark and help us out.' Eric Wagaman, who was also acquired in December, will take over full-time duties at first base, but McCullough said rookie catcher Liam Hicks will be thrown in the mix there as well. Also Friday, the Marlins called up infielder Jack Winkler and outfielder Heriberto Hernández from the minors. Infielder Graham Pauley was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville, and Ronny Simon was designated for assignment days after the rookie second baseman committed three errors in three innings in a loss at San Diego. Simon tearfully exited that game and ran into the dugout after being taken out in the fifth. He drove in five runs while hitting .234 with two doubles, seven walks and seven strikeouts in 19 games for the Marlins. 'Ronny, what a great teammate,' McCullough said. 'He did some nice things here for us during his time (here).' Xavier Edwards will move from shortstop to second base when he returns from the injured list, McCullough said. Edwards, who is recovering from a left mid back strain, began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday and was scheduled to play second base in his appearance Friday night. The 25-year-old began at second base when he joined the Marlins in 2023 and has had much more success at the position than at shortstop, were he's spent time over the past couple of years. Otto Lopez, who has started at shortstop in Edwards' place, will remain there. 'I think it'll be a good move for us and X,' McCullough said. '(He) certainly has a lot of time over there. It might take a little while to get back reacclimated to getting over there and up to game speed, but don't foresee that to take very long. And he's certainly skilled enough to do that.' ___ AP MLB:
